~ The work of Horacio Castellanos Moya is a crucial reference not only to imagine Central America's past and present, but also to examine the political implications that derive from literary writing in Spanish in the neoliberal era. This volume brings together the critical work of 14 academics from Latin America, Europe and the United States who address Moya's narrative in his main books along with his biographical and intellectual itinerary: the seminal novel El asco and its celebrated diatribe against El Salvador; the representations of militarism, the guerrilla and the postwar period in novels such as Insansatez, La diaspora and El arma en el hombre; the complex saga of the Aragón family, a genealogy that in more than one way inscribes the violent historical process of the different countries of the region. Each of these essays analyses the unresolved tension between fiction writing, the author's life experience, geopolitical power relations and the (im)possibility of agency and intervention in the literary project of Castellanos Moya. At first, we seek to question the critical limits of his work in an apparently post-political moment, but by delving into the confines of his poetics from a political perspective, we also try to point out the instances of radical freedom that articulates fiction from his discourse. These are, then, excursions towards the double path of tyranny and freedom of Horacio Castellanos Moya's fiction.
ROUND TRIP - The Emigrant's Journey: English version of the novel "TORNA VIAGEM - o Romance do Emigrante" written by the Madeiran writer Horácio Bento
Extract from the preface by Duarte Mendon a: (...) Hor cio Bento de Gouveia (1901-1983), a native of Ponta Delgada, a village of the northern side of the Portuguese island of Madeira, is the most prominent Madeiran writer of the 20th century. During his lifetime he published several major works such as "Ilh us" (1949), "L grimas Correndo Mundo" (1959), " guas Mansas" (1963), "Canhenhos da Ilha" (1966), "Alma Negra e Outras Almas" (1972), "Torna-Viagem - O Romance do Emigrante" (1979), "Margareta" (1980) and "Lu sa Marta", published posthumously in 1986. Gouveia's literary world revolves around the Madeiran reality of his time, both in his native Ponta Delgada or in Funchal, the island's capital, and in his novels one can find the portrayal of several topics such as the long exploitation of the peasants by the land owners, the dark side of embroidery industry and emigration. A peculiar feature of his characters is the way in which they speak, for the author presents their dialogues in an almost phonetic transcription, thus contributing to the preservation of several expressions of the Madeiran unique dialect. Emigration is a common word in Madeira's history throughout the centuries. Due to the limited size and resources of the island, the continuous increase of its population, the oppressive land exploitation system, poverty, the lack of job opportunities, several economic crisis, among other causes, the islanders always sought a better life abroad. Since mid 19th century Madeirans are known to have emigrated to several destinations such as Trinidad, Demerara, Sandwich Islands (nowadays known as Hawaii), Brazil, United States, Cura ao, South Africa, Venezuela, among other destinations. Around the mid 1900's Venezuela was the favorite emigration destination for thousands of Madeirans, who saw it as their Promised Land, a country where they could make all their dreams come true and therefore a better living for themselves and a brighter future for their children. (...) And an extract by the introduction: (...) Professor Francis M. Rogers (1914-1989) mentioned Hor cio Bento de Gouveia in his book Atlantic Islanders of The Azores and Madeiras (1979). As the grandson of immigrants from the Azores, it was his heritage that made him study and lecture on Portuguese language and literature in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures of Harvard University. In chapter 21 - High Culture (pp. 391-397), Hor cio Bento de Gouveia is referred to as one of the most valuable writers of the 20th century: "A Madeiran example is the novelist Hor cio Bento de Gouveia (born 1902) who in 1976 had the satisfaction of knowing that one of his novels, " guas Mansas", of 1963, had appeared in a German translation as "Stille Wasser von Madeira"..." The following is an extract from Professor Rogers' work, including his own translation of extracts from the works of Hor cio Bento de Gouveia: "... in 1966, the Junta General of Funchal itself published Bento de Gouveia's collection of short prose pieces entitled "Canhenhos da Ilha" (Memories of the Island), with its poignant description of the island, (...)
Methods for Analysis of Carbohydrate Metabolism in Photosynthetic Organisms
Methods for Analysis of Carbohydrate Metabolism in Photosynthetic Organisms: Plants, Green Algae and Cyanobacteria examines both general and detailed aspects of carbohydrate metabolism in photosynthetic organisms, along with the four main oligosaccharides and each enzymatic reaction that gives birth to them. Chapters include information on how biological active protein is extracted for different cells, determination of enzymatic activity, separation of proteins by different available methods, and descriptions of analytical methods for the determination of various types of carbohydrates in photosynthetic organisms. The book contains useful protocols for researchers working on the determination of carbohydrate metabolism. The book provides foundational content as well as step-by-step guidance on how to design and conduct an experiment, including what other methodologies could be used if advanced instruments are not readily available.

The financial industry derives its legitimacy through the claim that it acts in the interest of shareholders. A vast international network of funds, banks, insurance companies, brokerages, rating agencies, and regulatory agencies defends its status by asserting that market mechanisms determine a company’s true value and therefore enriching shareholders contributes to the socially optimal allocation of capital. Is this how stock prices are determined in practice? What does stock valuation reveal about the supposed efficiency of markets and what it means to act on behalf of shareholders?Horacio Ortiz provides a critical analysis of the social institutions and practices that produce and regulate stock pricing and valuation. He examines how financial professionals evaluate and invest in listed companies, unraveling the contradictory definitions of financial value that shape their behavior. Ortiz demonstrates how ideologically laden notions of investing skill and efficient markets are central to the everyday practices of financial valuation, as well as how they function to justify the broader system. He scrutinizes the technical aspects of valuation and investment, their place in social relations within and among companies, and their relation to state regulation in order to demystify how the financial industry presents prices as truths that the rest of society must accept.Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted among stock brokers and investment management companies in New York and Paris, this book shows how the political imaginaries that underpin financial markets are central to producing, sustaining, and legitimizing global inequalities.

The Decapitated Chicken and Other Stories

Horacio Quiroga

Tales of horror, madness, and death, tales of fantasy and morality: these are the works of South American master storyteller Horacio Quiroga. Author of some 200 pieces of fiction that have been compared to the works of Poe, Kipling, and Jack London, Quiroga experienced a life that surpassed in morbidity and horror many of the inventions of his fevered mind. As a young man, he suffered his father's accidental death and the suicide of his beloved stepfather. As a teenager, he shot and accidentally killed one of his closest friends. Seemingly cursed in love, he lost his first wife to suicide by poison. In the end, Quiroga himself downed cyanide to end his own life when he learned he was suffering from an incurable cancer. In life Quiroga was obsessed with death, a legacy of the violence he had experienced. His stories are infused with death, too, but they span a wide range of short fiction genres: jungle tale, Gothic horror story, morality tale, psychological study. Many of his stories are set in the steaming jungle of the Misiones district of northern Argentina, where he spent much of his life, but his tales possess a universality that elevates them far above the work of a regional writer. The first representative collection of his work in English, The Decapitated Chicken and Other Stories provides a valuable overview of the scope of Quiroga's fiction and the versatility and skill that have made him a classic Latin American writer.

Tales of risk and danger, suffering, disease, horror, and death. Tales, also, of courage and dignity, hard work, and human endurance in the face of hostile nature and the frequent brutality of men. And tales flavored with piquant touches of humor and bemused irony. These are the stories of the Uruguayan writer Horacio Quiroga, here presented in an important compilation of thirteen of his most compelling tales, sensitively selected and translated by J. David Danielson. Author of some two hundred pieces of fiction, often compared to the works of Kipling, Jack London, and Edgar Allan Poe, Quiroga set many of his stories in the territory of Misiones in northeastern Argentina, the subtropical jungle region where he spent much of his life. Included here are stories from Los desterrados (1926) often said to be his best book, as well as others from Cuentos de amor de locura y de muerte (1917), Anaconda (1921), and El Desierto (1924). The publication of this selection marks the first appearance in English of all but two of the thirteen stories. Quiroga here presents a wide range of characters: parents and children, servant girls and prostitutes, landowners and lumber barons, foremen and laborers, natives and immigrants, in stories pervaded by a vision of life that is elemental, incisive, and essentially tragic. The Exiles and Other Stories shows the versatility and skill that have made him a classic Spanish American writer. It complements and illumines The Decapitated Chicken and Other Stories, selected and translated by Margaret Sayers Peden, also published by the University of Texas Press.

A thorough yet highly readable introduction to the complex world of nonlinear science Today’s technological advances have brought about a growing demand for better performance. This, coupled with the availability of low-cost computing power, has led control engineers to face problems of increasingly higher complexity. Consequently, the linear approximations once used to analyze these problems are giving way to more accurate and realistic nonlinear models, forcing both students and industry practitioners to abandon the peripheral view of the linear world and immerse themselves in the reality of nonlinear science. Nonlinear Control Systems: Analysis and Design addresses the need for an up-to-date yet readable pedagogical presentation of this difficult subject. Assuming no previous background on the subject, the author takes readers from the very basics to some of the most current research topics being addressed today. Highlights of the text include: *Complete yet concise coverage of both the Lyapunov and Input-Output stability theories *An introduction to the popular backstepping approach to nonlinear control design *Thorough discussion of the concept of input-to-state stability *Coverage of the fundamentals of feedback linearization and related results *Detailed coverage of the fundamentals of dissipative systems theory and its application in the so-called L2gain control problem *In-depth discussion of nonlinear observers, a very important problem not commonly covered in introductory textbooks The author’s friendly, accessible treatment of even highly complex topics makes this text an invaluable resource for students and professionals alike.

Evolution of Sickness and Healing

Evolution of Sickness and Healing is a theoretical work on the grand scale, an original synthesis of many disciplines in social studies of medicine. Looking at human sickness and healing through the lens of evolutionary theory, Horacio Fàbrega, Jr. presents not only the vulnerability to disease and injury but also the need to show and communicate sickness and to seek and provide healing as innate biological traits grounded in evolution. This linking of sickness and healing, as inseparable facets of a unique human adaptation developed during the evolution of the hominid line, offers a new vantage point from which to examine the institution of medicine. To show how this complex, integrated adaptation for sickness and healing lies at the root of medicine, and how it is expressed culturally in relation to the changing historical contingencies of human societies, Fàbrega traces the characteristics of sickness and healing through the early and later stages of social evolution. Besides offering a new conceptual structure and a methodology for analyzing medicine in evolutionary terms, he shows the relevance of this approach and its implications for the social sciences and for medical policy. Health scientists and medical practitioners, along with medical historians, economists, anthropologists, and sociologists, now have the opportunity to consider every essential aspect of medicine within an integrated framework. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1997.
