Published to accompany an exhibition at MK Gallery, this is the first major survey of the work of contemporary British artist and photographer Ingrid Pollard, nominated for the Turner Prize 2022.This publication provides the first overview of works by British artist and photographer Ingrid Pollard. Pollard is renowned for using portrait and landscape photography to question our relationship with the natural world and to interrogate social constructs such as Britishness, race, sexuality and identity. Working across a variety of techniques from photography, printmaking, drawing and installation to artists’ books, video and audio, Pollard combines meticulous research and experimental processes to make art that is at once deeply personal and socially resonant.‘Ingrid Pollard’s practice has long been focused on the human body, astro-physics and geology, and in particular geology in the formation of the stars and planets. The title of this publication – Carbon Slowly Turning – invites us to reflect on geological time in relation to human time. On the one hand, the millennia in which carbon, rock and other natural materials are made, and on the other, the brevity of human existence by comparison and the affecting nature of geology on the human form. A number of Pollard’s works reflect on the cyclical nature of history and human experience, where everything is subject to change, sometimes over hundreds or thousands of years, at other times in the blink of an eye.’— Gilane Tawadros, Curator, writer and CEO, DACS‘Ingrid Pollard’s work slows down our looking to create space to consider alternative formations of history and landscape. Across four decades she has re-scripted Britishness, looking back in order that we might move forward differently. This is a profound and timely exploration of this vital British artist.’— Maria Balshaw, Director, TateThis book accompanies an exhibition at MK Gallery and Turner Contemporary, curated by Gilane Tawadros, with the artist, and supported by the Freelands Award 2020. Edited by Fay Blanchard and Anthony Spira. Essays by Anna Arabindan-Kesson, Cheryl Finley, Paul Gilroy, Mason Leaver-Yap and Gilane Tawadros.

The Guardian's Poem of the Week, 8th November 2010The Black GuitarClearing out ten years from a wardrobeI opened its lid and saw Joewritten twice in its dust, in a child's hand, then a squiggled seagull or two. Joe, Joea man's tears are worth nothing, but a child's name in the dust, or in the sandof a darkening beach, that's a life's work.I touched two strings, to hear how muchtwo lives can slip out of tune then I left it,brought down the night on it, for fear, Joeof hearing your unbroken voice, or the seaif I played it.Here is a book of ghosts, from the mysterious traveller in the title poem who, mistaken for another man, starts to crave his new alter ego, to the first person of 'Between Two Bridges', Henry's long poem on Newport, who follows his teenage ghost across the city for a night:He pulls away. The wind puts its lips to an arcade.A seagull on a barber's pole waits to open its blades. How the living haunt themselves is the concern of Ingrid's Husband, and the author discovers his spirits through an imagery of absences: a child's signature in the dust of an old guitar; the stone plinth where a café once stood; a white balloon drifting down a shopping arcade; a chateau, still furnished with the belongings of its vanished owner…Love continues to underscore the commonplace in Paul Henry's fifth collection and this lyric poet's distinctive voice continues to haunt its readers."Ingrid's Husband showcases Henry's eye for striking imagery… Ingrid's Husband succeeds as a powerful meditation on loss, and its tentative, never fully realised, attempts at renewal are always affecting… there's more than enough fine writing in this volume to reward sustained attention."New Welsh Review"Henry's poems work through images deftly juxtaposed; they evoke a world of fleeting memories and echo the processes of intuitive thought… Paul Henry can be mischievously perceptive of the danger lurking behind appearances." Poetry Salzburg"Paul Henry's lyrical poems achieve perfect pitch, matching sound to sense with, seemingly a minimum of effort. In Ingrid's Husband, his fifth collection from Seren, musicality of line is evident throughout."Poetry Review"With the purity of a sixteenth-century poet, Paul Henry lets fall his beautiful lyrics like cloaks in the mud of every day. Effortless epiphanies and images gradually break open, releasing a strange power, a dark ocean of longing and loss. His poetry deepens our perception of the world."Hugo Williams"A poet's poet, Paul Henry gets maximum effect from minimum language. The ordinary becomes alive with possibility, comic, moving, magical, compassionate. A sense of the music of words combines with an endlessly inventive imagination."U.A. Fanthorpe"What I hate about this book is the fact that I didn't write it."Sheenagh PughPaul Henry was born in Aberystwyth in 1959. He currently lives in Gwent with his wife and three sons. Originally a singer-songwriter, he combines freelance writing with working as a Careers Adviser. In 1989 he received an Eric Gregory Award.

*Includes pictures of Bergman and important people, places, and scenes. *Includes Bergman's own quotes about her upbringing, films and relationships. *Includes a Bibliography for further reading. "Be yourself. The world worships the original." - Ingrid Bergman Since the early 20th century, film has been embraced as arguably the preeminent international art form. Not only is Hollywood cinema immensely popular around the world, but other nationalities (Bollywood being the greatest current example) have their own thriving industries. Major actors and actresses are not only icons in their parent countries but reach tremendous international fame. However, most actors who become internationally famous do so via the success of the films they make in their native land, without actually leaving their country. One of the most famous early examples is Charlie Chaplin, who reached incredible fame in Asia and Western Europe during the silent cinema era despite having never left the confines of Hollywood. Chaplin's example illustrates how the vast majority of film stars who reach international fame do so through the global success of the films they make within a given industry. This dynamic highlights the uniqueness of Ingrid Bergman's career and her significance as an international film star. Not only were films like Casablanca (1942) famous around the world, but she made films in five different languages and film industries. In this regard, she was the rare star who was willing to literally act in films produced in different countries. Bergman's fame cannot be doubted, but the international quality of her career has prevented most people from gaining a complete understanding of her filmography. Moreover, the immense success of her most famous films obscured her other achievements; one of Bergman's persistent lamentations late in her career was that even though she appeared in other films she deemed more significant, the only film of hers that people wanted to discuss was Casablanca. As a result, her early films in Sweden, the Italian Neorealist films she made with famous director and future husband Roberto Rossellini, and her French film with Jean Renoir have all been relegated to the margins. Bergman is thus recognized as a Hollywood star rather than an actress who should be identified with an array of different film industries, reducing the enormous scope of her career to a relatively small proportion of her filmography. At the same time, Bergman's personal life reflects the dynamics of the film industry and the relationship between celebrities and American culture more generally. At times during her career, Bergman was the darling of Hollywood, but at other times she was literally a pariah. It is all too common to remember Bergman for her performance in Casablanca, forgetting the fact that she was effectively exiled from Hollywood for several years during her romance with Roberto Rossellini. Her life and career amply demonstrated the expectations American culture held for their film stars during the mid-20th century. Ingrid Bergman: The First International Movie Star profiles the life and career of one of the world's most famous actresses and entertainment icons. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about Ingrid Bergman like you never have before, in no time at all.

Ingrid Bergman: a life in pictures 1915-1982 - stockholm, berlin, hollywood
Her part as Ilsa Lund in Casablanca (1942) co-starring Humphrey Bogart made Ingrid Bergman (born in Stockholm in 1915) a Hollywood icon, followed by the Hemingway adaptation For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943) with Gary Cooper, Cukor's Gaslight (1944) and Hitchcock's Spellbound (1945). Reflecting Ingrid Bergman's career and based on the family archive, this photo book features unpublished pictures that her father Justus took when she was a young and aspiring actress in Stockholm, film stills, and famous paparazzi shots. A breathtaking beauty, she was famous for her affair with photographer Robert Capa and her controversial marriage with Italian filmmaker Roberto Rossellini, with whom she had three children. Ingrid Bergman received three Academy Awards: Gaslight (Best Actress, 1945), Anastasia (Best Actress, 1956), Murder on the Orient Express (Best Supporting Actress, 1975).
