Advance Praise for Jackson's Way "I enjoyed it very much. It’s an excellent study . . . of an area and a time period too long neglected by historians . . . provides valuable new information, particularly on the Indians."–Robert Remini, author of The Life of Andrew Jackson "John Buchanan has written a book that explodes with action and drama on virtually every page. Yet the complex story of the birth of the American West never loses its focus–Andrew Jackson’s improbable rise to fame and power. This is an American saga, brilliantly told by a master of historical narrative."–Thomas Fleming, author of Duel: Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr, and the Future of America Praise for John Buchanan’s The Road to Guilford Courthouse "Outstanding popular military history . . . an accomplishment of the same high order as . . . McPherson’s Civil War historiography."–Booklist " A tense, exciting historical account of a little-known chapter of the Revolution, displaying history writing at its best."–Kirkus Reviews "His compelling narrative brings readers closer than ever before to the reality of Revolutionary warfare in the Carolinas."–Raleigh News & Observer "A lively, accurate account of a critical period in the War of Independence in the South . . . it deserves a large reading audience."–Don Higginbotham, Professor of History, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

Jackson's Sword

Jackson's Sword

Samuel J. Watson

University Press of Kansas
2012

Jackson’s Sword is the initial volume in a monumental study that provides a sweeping panoramic view of the U.S. Army and its officer corps from the War of 1812 to the War with Mexico, the first such study in more than forty years. Watson’s chronicle shows how the officer corps played a crucial role in stabilising the frontiers of a rapidly expanding nation, while gradually moving away from military adventurism toward a professionalism subordinate to civilian authority. Jackson’s Swordexplores problems of institutional instability, multiple loyalties, and insubordination as it demonstrates how the officer corps often undermined—and sometimes supplanted—civilian authority with regard to war-making and diplomacy on the frontier. Watson shows that army officers were often motivated by regionalism and sectionalism, as well as antagonism toward Indians, Spaniards, and Britons. The resulting belligerence incited them to invade Spanish Florida and Texas without authorisation and to pursue military solutions to complex intercultural and international dilemmas. Watson focuses on the years when Andrew Jackson led the Division of the South—often contrary to orders from his civilian superiors—examining his decade-long quasi-war with Spaniards and Indians along the northern border of Florida. Watson explores differences between army attitudes toward the Texas and Florida borders to explain why Spain ceded Florida but not Texas to the United States. He then examines the army’s shift to the western frontier of white settlement by focusing on expeditions to advance U.S. power up the Missouri River and drive British influence from the Louisiana Purchase. More than merely recounting campaigns and operations, Watson explores civil-military relations, officer socialisation, commissioning, resignations, and assignments, and sets these in the context of social, political, economic, technological, military, and cultural changes during the early republic and the Age of Jackson. He portrays officers as identifying with frontiersmen and southern farmers and lacking respect for civilian authority and constitutional processes—but having little sympathy for civilian adventurers—and delves deeply into primary sources that reveal what they thought, wrote, and did on the frontier. Jackson’s Sword captures an era on the eve of military professionalism to shed new light on the military’s role in the early republic.

Jackson Pollock Splashed Paint And Wasn't Sorry.

Fausto Gilberti

Phaidon Press Ltd

A clever, charmingly quirky portrayal of painter Jackson Pollock – and the first in a series of picture-book biographies of contemporary artists Jackson Pollock was unlike any other painter. Instead of sitting in front of an easel with brushes, he poured paint over canvases rolled-out across the floor, moving, splashing, and making the vivid liquid run with energy and rhythm. Pollock’s story is told here with wit and eccentricity, perfectly paired with black-line illustrations – and splatters galore. Fausto Gilberti brings movement, life, and whimsy to the true life story of one of the most important contemporary artists of our time. Ages 4-7

Deborah Solomon's biography sets Jackson Pollock in his time and portrays him as a shy, often withdrawn person, full of insecurities and self-doubts, and frequently unable to express himself about his art or its meaning. Solomon interviewed two hundred people who knew Pollock and his work and she has drawn extensively on Pollock's own writings and other personal papers. She examines the artist's relationships with his family; his wife and fellow artist Lee Krasner; art patron Peggy Guggenheim; the painters Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, and many more.

Perhaps no aspect of Jackson Pollock's oeuvre-one of the most important American artists of the twentieth century-has been more misunderstood than the drawings Pollock created during Jungian psychoanalysis sessions from 1939-40. Presented to his psychotherapist, where they remained in private files for almost three decades until their publication in 1970, these drawings have been shrouded in both personal and art-historical controversy-from a lawsuit filed by Pollock's widow, Lee Krasner, to wide-ranging justifications of them as Jungian iconography or as "proof" of Pollock's supposed mental disorder. Published in conjunction with an exhibition touring the United States, this book draws together sixty-nine drawings and one gouache, beautifully reproduced in accurate color for the first time. The images reveal a range of styles, from highly refined and elaborate sketches to rapid and automatic improvisations, as well as a range of subjects, from human figures, animals, and cryptic figures to purely abstract forms. Together, they bear witness to Pollock's intense interest in the latest contemporary art as well as non-Western traditions. Art historian Claude Cernuschi's essay addresses key historical and interpretive questions surrounding these drawings: what was their intended purpose?; do they have particular psychoanalytic importance? what is the relationship between psychoanalysis and art? Ultimately, Cernuschi argues for the importance of reintegrating these works into their rightly held place in Pollock's oeurve. Remarkable for their beauty as well as spontaneity, these drawings reflect the conscious intellectual choice of an artist blazing new trails.
