Whether in factual, fictive, fabulist or forensic form, Malins is squinting through life's surface reflections and writing what she glimpses underneath.

Cavorting with Time is a series of poems about female ageing and mortality. Jacqui Malins shares them here as a work in progress, a script that will develop and mature over time, gathering notes and annotations with each new presentation. She has performed variations of it solo, with musical accompaniment, and now it performs on the page. In this sequence of poems, Jacqui Malins negotiates and renegotiates her relationship with time and its effects on the body and mind. Time is a complex presence: variously a musician, a dance partner, a tattooist, an adversary to be gripped and wrestled, the turner of a cosmic crankhandle, a pair of cupped hands waiting to catch us at the end of consciousness, and more. Malins bears clear-eyed and nuanced witness to the ravages and caresses of our constant companion, 'Time, our sister' while gazing calmly at 'Death, who walks with her.' An experience you will not forget. Melinda Smith Winner, 2014 Prime Minister's Literary Award for Poetry

We Welcome You is a three-part baptism preparation course to help parishes prepare families for their child’s baptism and to discover the joyful start of a lifelong journey of faith. Drawing on extensive research with families, the course helps parishes to engage families with practical tips on welcome and on helping children and families prepare well for this significant spiritual moment. We Welcome You can be used with small groups or with individual families, but there are also options for using the material in a single session and even at a home visit. Containing all the resources necessary, it covers every aspect of this vital ministry and aims to enrich pastoral practice and, importantly, the experience of families. Session 1 helps families to reflect on why they want their child baptized, the importance of godparents, and the deeper meaning of baptism. Session 2 looks at the baptism service itself and the promises made at it, and explores the key symbols and their significance. Session 3 encourages families to continue on their spiritual journey, with ideas for praying with their child, reading Bible stories together and becoming part of a local church community. Informal and participative, the course offers a wide range of approaches including icebreaker activities and discussion starters, storytelling, reflection and discussion, crafts, quizzes and games. Historians have long claimed that a tradition of fear of Japan dominated Australian thinking about foreign affairs and defense after Japan's defeat of Russia in 1905 and that this fear remained widespread throughout the Australian population until the Pacific War. This study of Australian reporting on Japan challenges that claim by exposing a culture of state censorship, intimidation of the media, and neglect of official public discussion of foreign affairs in the years 1931-1941 which resulted in newspapers, radio, and news reels projecting a collective national consciousness of Japan as a nation of little import—despite very real fears in senior political ranks about Japanese designs on Australia. Jacqui Murray's argument for the Australian media's underestimation of Japan's threat is sustained by close examination of media practices, publications, and broadcasts which clearly show misleading representations of Japan before the Pacific War. Watching the Sun Rise details not only government peace-time media censorship but also war-time propaganda flows from Australian, British, and Japanese sources into the Australian media and examples of cooperation and/or espionage among media personnel.

The Curse of Lovely

The Curse of Lovely

Many people's lives, relationships, careers and wellbeing are blighted by the belief that to be liked, loved and accepted they have to limit themselves to the behaviours they believe are approved of by others. This might mean some or all of the following: always being polite, nice, helpful, charming, fun, making people feel good about themselves, not letting people down, never saying 'no', avoiding conflict and putting others' needs before their own. In her 15 years of clinical experience as a psychologist Jacqui Marson has coined the phrase 'the curse of lovely' to describe this growing trend. Many people would like to be known as lovely, but for a growing number of people it can feel like a curse. They feel unable to put their own needs before those of everyone else, and feel that changing this is not an option. This highly practical and motivational book will show readers how to break curse of lovely to live a more complete, fulfilling life. Contents include: when 'lovely' turns into a curse; the lovely child - how it all begins; the different shades of lovely - which one are you?; from curse to gift - how we can still be lovable and get our needs met; but what do I want - how to tune in to what your body is telling you; re-evaluating anger; saying 'no' and surviving; how to instigate scary conversations; and how to replace the personal rules that put you at the bottom on the pile.

Tasting the Past: Recipes from George III to Victoria
The many influences of the past on our diet make the concept of ‘British food’ very hard to define. The Celts, Romans, Saxons, Vikings and Normans each brought ingredients to the table, and the country was introduced to all manner of spices following the Crusades. The Georgians enjoyed a new level of excess and then, of course, the world wars forced us into the challenge of making meals from very little. The history of cooking in Britain is as tumultuous as the times its people have lived through. Tasting the Past: Recipes from George III to Victoria documents the rich history of our food, its fads and its fashions, combined with a practical cookbook of over eighty recipes from the reigns of George III and Queen Victoria. Jacqui Wood introduces the meals that made up the bread-and-butter of Victorian and Georgian cuisine, their seasonal specialities in the form of Christmas recipes, and the curious take on ‘Indian’ cooking that the imperial endeavours of the Victorians brought back home.
