From the author of Blackbeard Reconsidered! James Wimble was best known for his map of the Lower Cape Fear Region in 1733, and especially for his final map of 1738. Wimble saved the fledgling port town of Wilmington, North Carolina from certain ruin. As Alan D. Watson, in Wilmington, North Carolina, to 1861 put it, Wimble "no doubt was the prime instigator of the new town." Londoners would remember him for his exploits as a privateer in the War of Jenkins Ear, in the 1740's. Many of the British local "rags" describe him as taking prizes of great "burthen" and "rich cargo." These exciting times for English readers proved less than exuberant for Wimble, however. What we know of him during that time mostly comes from British records. His wife died, he lost an arm to chain shot in 1742, and later, almost his life while chasing down a Spanish ship through the Florida Keys in a ship that he named "Revenge." In his final days, James Wimble went back to London to engage in the timber trade.

"This well-written book by an established authority should be in any well-stocked undergraduate/graduate mathematics/statistics library." –Choice (American Library Association) A Classic of Statistical Science, Now Thoroughly Revised and Updated S. James Press’s Bayesian Statistics: Principles, Models, and Applications set the standard for references in Bayesian statistics. It has stood as the classic introduction to the subject for practitioners, researchers, and students alike. Since the publication of the First Edition, the field of Bayesian statistical science has grown so substantially that it has become necessary to rewrite the story. New methodologies have been developed, new techniques have emerged for implementing the Bayesian paradigm, and advances in computer science, numerical analysis, artificial intelligence, and machine learning–including data mining and Bayesian neural networks–have tremendously impacted the field of Bayesian learning. Applications using the Bayesian approach have multiplied as well to span most of the disciplines in the biological, physical, and social sciences. Subjective and Objective Bayesian Statistics: Principles, Models, and Applications, Second Edition has been rewritten from the bottom up to encompass these changes and to make the text even more useful to the reader. Greatly expanded and revised, this new edition discusses Bayesian theory and principles in depth, expands coverage of many topics to include multivariate procedures, and references applications in many fields to support the usefulness of the subject matter. Chapters cover: *Subjective Probability *Prior Distribution Families *Approximations, Numerical Methods (Including Markov Chain Monte Carlo Sampling), and Computer Programs *Assessing Multivariate Prior Distributions (Illustrated by Assessing the Probability of Nuclear War) *Bayesian Estimation, Hypothesis Testing, Decision Making, and Prediction *Bayesian Model Averaging *Bayesian Hierarchical Modeling *Bayesian Inference in Univariate and Multivariate Regression *Bayesian Inference in Univariate and Multivariate Analysis of Variance and Covariance *Bayesian Inference in Classification and Discrimination *Bayesian Factor Analysis New to this edition are numerous answers to chapter problems at the rear of the book, greatly expanded coverage, as well as a unique discussion of the de Finetti Transform and other rare topics such as Bayesian model averaging, Bayesian Hierarchical modeling, and Bayesian factor analysis. Experienced statisticians and students alike will be fascinated by the "Bayesian Hall of Fame," with portraits of important contributors to the development of the field, that graces this edition. Blending theory and application, this Second Edition ensures that this highly-respected reference will remain an essential tool for statisticians for years to come. Amstat News asked three review editors to rate their top five favorite books in the September 2003 issue. Subjective and Objective Bayesian Statistics was among those chosen.

Datasets are growing not just in size but in complexity, creating a demand for rich models and quantification of uncertainty. Bayesian methods are an excellent fit for this demand, but scaling Bayesian inference is a challenge. In response to this challenge, there has been considerable recent work based on varying assumptions about model structure, underlying computational resources, and the importance of asymptotic correctness. As a result, there is a zoo of ideas with a wide range of assumptions and applicability.Patterns of Scalable Bayesian Inference seeks to identify unifying principles, patterns, and intuitions for scaling Bayesian inference. It examines how these techniques can be scaled up to larger problems and scaled out across parallel computational resources. It reviews existing work on utilizing modern computing resources with both MCMC and variational approximation techniques. From this taxonomy of ideas, it characterizes the general principles that have proven successful for designing scalable inference procedures and addresses some of the significant open questions and challenges.

The Subjectivity of Scientists and the Bayesian Approach

Comparing and contrasting the reality of subjectivity in the work of historys great scientists and the modern Bayesian approach to statistical analysis Scientists and researchers are taught to analyze their data from an objective point of view, allowing the data to speak for themselves rather than assigning them meaning based on expectations or opinions. But scientists have never behaved fully objectively. Throughout history, some of our greatest scientific minds have relied on intuition, hunches, and personal beliefs to make sense of empirical dataand these subjective influences have often aided in humanitys greatest scientific achievements. The authors argue that subjectivity has not only played a significant role in the advancement of science, but that science will advance more rapidly if the modern methods of Bayesian statistical analysis replace some of the classical twentieth-century methods that have traditionally been taught. To accomplish this goal, the authors examine the lives and work of historys great scientists and show that even the most successful have sometimes misrepresented findings or been influenced by their own preconceived notions of religion, metaphysics, and the occult, or the personal beliefs of their mentors. Contrary to popular belief, our greatest scientific thinkers approached their data with a combination of subjectivity and empiricism, and thus informally achieved what is more formally accomplished by the modern Bayesian approach to data analysis. Yet we are still taught that science is purely objective. This innovative book dispels that myth using historical accounts and biographical sketches of more than a dozen great scientists, including Aristotle, Galileo Galilei, Johannes Kepler, William Harvey, Sir Isaac Newton, Antoine Levoisier, Alexander von Humboldt, Michael Faraday, Charles Darwin, Louis Pasteur, Gregor Mendel, Sigmund Freud, Marie Curie, Robert Millikan, Albert Einstein, Sir Cyril Burt, and Margaret Mead. Also included is a detailed treatment of the modern Bayesian approach to data analysis. Up-to-date references to the Bayesian theoretical and applied literature, as well as reference lists of the primary sources of the principal works of all the scientists discussed, round out this comprehensive treatment of the subject. Readers will benefit from this cogent and enlightening view of the history of subjectivity in science and the authors alternative vision of how the Bayesian approach should be used to further the cause of science and learning well into the twenty-first century.

"...this edition is useful and effective in teaching Bayesian inference at both elementary and intermediate levels. It is a well-written book on elementary Bayesian inference, and the material is easily accessible. It is both concise and timely, and provides a good collection of overviews and reviews of important tools used in Bayesian statistical methods." There is a strong upsurge in the use of Bayesian methods in applied statistical analysis, yet most introductory statistics texts only present frequentist methods. Bayesian statistics has many important advantages that students should learn about if they are going into fields where statistics will be used. In this third Edition, four newly-added chapters address topics that reflect the rapid advances in the field of Bayesian statistics. The authors continue to provide a Bayesian treatment of introductory statistical topics, such as scientific data gathering, discrete random variables, robust Bayesian methods, and Bayesian approaches to inference for discrete random variables, binomial proportions, Poisson, and normal means, and simple linear regression. In addition, more advanced topics in the field are presented in four new chapters: Bayesian inference for a normal with unknown mean and variance; Bayesian inference for a Multivariate Normal mean vector; Bayesian inference for the Multiple Linear Regression Model; and Computational Bayesian Statistics including Markov Chain Monte Carlo. The inclusion of these topics will facilitate readers' ability to advance from a minimal understanding of Statistics to the ability to tackle topics in more applied, advanced level books. Minitab macros and R functions are available on the book's related website to assist with chapter exercises. Introduction to Bayesian Statistics, Third Edition also features: Topics including the Joint Likelihood function and inference using independent Jeffreys priors and join conjugate priorThe cutting-edge topic of computational Bayesian Statistics in a new chapter, with a unique focus on Markov Chain Monte Carlo methodsExercises throughout the book that have been updated to reflect new applications and the latest software applicationsDetailed appendices that guide readers through the use of R and Minitab software for Bayesian analysis and Monte Carlo simulations, with all related macros available on the book's website Introduction to Bayesian Statistics, Third Edition is a textbook for upper-undergraduate or first-year graduate level courses on introductory statistics course with a Bayesian emphasis. It can also be used as a reference work for statisticians who require a working knowledge of Bayesian statistics.

Communism: Its Faith And Fallacies is a book written by James D. Bales that provides a comprehensive overview of communism, a political and economic ideology that advocates for the abolition of private property and the establishment of a classless society. The book explores the history of communism, its key principles and beliefs, and its impact on societies that have implemented it.Bales argues that communism is a flawed ideology that is based on false assumptions and unrealistic expectations. He critiques the communist belief that the state should control all aspects of society, including the economy and individual freedoms, and argues that this leads to economic inefficiency and human suffering. The book also examines the fall of communism in the Soviet Union and other Eastern European countries, and the reasons for its failure. Bales argues that communism's collapse was due to its inability to deliver on its promises of a better society, as well as its inherent flaws and contradictions.Overall, Communism: Its Faith And Fallacies is a thought-provoking analysis of one of the most influential political ideologies of the 20th century, and a warning against the dangers of totalitarianism and state control. An Exposition And Criticism. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

What was the true mission of Jesus the Messiah? Did He intend to set up an earthly kingdom? Was the church not prophesied in the Old Testament? Was the gospel age an afterthought of God, put in place because somehow the Jews thwarted His plan to establish an earthly kingdom? Using the Bible, and comparing it to writings from prominent premillennialists, James Bales utterly devastates their false assumptions and doctrines, and shows quite clearly that Jesus Christ fulfilled His mission, fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies, and established the kingdom of God in the first century.
Half-elf, warrior, scholar, philosopherQuentin of Hamil struggles through a frontier world trying to recover from a devastating war. The sole-survivor of the battle that destroyed his country, he emerges from the ruin on quest for the answers to the mystery of his life: What happened to his loved ones in the war, how did he survive, what is his place in this new world, and how can he free his fallen country from the horrendous curse that forces the dead to walk each night in search of mortal lives. And through this battle to survive, lies the greatest quest of all: the search for his God. James Byles is an adjunct English Professor at Cleveland (Tennessee) State Community College, a singer/songwriter, a father to two teenagers, and a searcher in the Way of Yeshua Ha Natzarine.
Follow Dr. Jeremiah through the book of James in a chapter-by-chapter study that will help you understand what it meant to the people at the time it was written, and what it means to Christians today. The connection between faith and works lies at the very heart of the letter of James. The author of this short letter is concerned not only with what we as followers of Christ believe but also with how those beliefs shape our actions.James' words contain enduring practical advice for putting faith into action. Each of this study's twelve lessons is clearly organized to include:Getting Started: An opening question to introduce you to the lesson.Setting the Stage: A short reflection to explain the context of the study.Exploring the Text: The Scripture reading for the lesson with related study questions.Reviewing the Story: Questions to help you identify key points in the reading.Applying the Message: Questions to help you apply the key ideas to their lives.Reflecting on the Meaning: A closing reflection on the key teachings in the lesson.—ABOUT THE SERIES—The Jeremiah Bible Study Series captures Dr. David Jeremiah's forty-plus years of commitment in teaching the Word of God. In each study, you'll gain insights into the text, identify key stories and themes, and be challenged to apply the truths you uncover to your life. By the end of each study, you'll come away with a clear and memorable understanding of that Bible book.
Live full of faith through hard timesDo you ever feel like you can’t take one more thing? You’re on the edge. Your nerves are shot. Your mind is done. Your body is tired, and your emotions are a mess. If you could gather yourself for even a moment you might explode at the reality of all you’ve been through. In the face of the fears, frustrations, and failures of this world, we have a choice. We can sit and stare at the life we live and hope something changes. Or we can rise up and walk in faith. In this Bible study, author and speaker Micah Maddox walks you through the book of James and compares the teaching of James with what Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount from Matthew and the wisdom of Solomon we find in Proverbs. When we discover the themes of what a faith-filled life looked like before, during, and after the time of Christ, we see how Scripture points us to honor God in an active life of faith. This five-week study will help you to:Revisit the foundation of your faithLook to God first in hard situationsDiscover faith isn’t a list of do’s and don’tsMove from a place of struggle to a place of comfortGain a fresh perspective on how to live full of faith when feeling tired and testedIncludes historical and biblical background insight and questions for reflection.InScribed is a collection of studies that lead women to not just survive but thrive by encouraging them to immerse themselves in the Word of God.
