Side Lights is a collection of essays offering keen insights into society, literature, and human experience. The author critiques the decline of genuine communication, especially in the form of letter-writing, contrasting it with the superficiality of modern exchanges. The essays reflect on the impact of easily consumed works that lack depth, calling for authenticity in both literature and communication. Through his writing, the author also expresses deep sympathy for the struggles of the working class, highlighting the endurance of human hardship. The collection emphasizes the importance of heartfelt expression and the value of meaningful connections. Runciman's reflections challenge the reader to consider the authenticity of their interactions and the deeper layers of societal changes. The timeless relevance of his observations speaks to the complexities of human emotions, the importance of communication, and the challenges of maintaining depth in an increasingly superficial world. The collection serves as both a critique and a call for more thoughtful, genuine engagement with life and literature, reflecting societal shifts while also addressing enduring human concerns.

First published in 1904, this volume emerged during a split within the Liberal Unionist Party over Joseph Chamberlain’s advocacy of Protectionism through Tariff Reform. Having originally broken with the Liberal Party over Home Rule in 1885, 1904 saw some Liberal Unionists return to the Liberal fold. The authors here constitute those departing Liberal Unionists in a multifaceted rallying call for Free Trade in the face of Protectionism. Their articles, on subjects such as Shipping, Agriculture and Engineering, assess the implications of Free Trade with a focus on each author’s specialist industry. The authors unanimously declare in favour of the system under which, they maintain, Great Britain developed unparalleled prosperity and taught other nations her industrial success. In the process, they demonstrate that trade cannot improve whilst fettered and focus on the potential for real improvements through Free Trade.

The Identity of the Professional Interpreter

The Identity of the Professional Interpreter

Alan James Runcieman

This monograph examines how higher education(HE) institutions construct ‘professional identities’ in the classroom, specifically how dominant discourses in institutions frame the social role, requisite skills and character required to practice a profession, and how students navigate these along their academic trajectories. This book is based on a longitudinal case study of a prestigious HE institution specialising in training professional interpreters. Adopting an innovative research approach, it investigates a community of aspiring professionals in a HE context by drawing on small story narrative analysis from an ethnographic perspective to provide emic insights into the student community and the development of their social identities. The findings (contextualised by examining the curricula of similar institutions worldwide) suggest that interpreter institutions might not be providing students with a clear and comprehensive picture of the interpreterprofession, and not responding to its increasingly complex role in today’s society.
