Jahrhunderts in Frankreich. In seinen dramatischen Werken verwirklichte Sartre einige wichtige Elemente seiner existentialistischen Philosophie.

Christine de Pizan was born in Italy and moved to the French court of Charles V when she was four years old. She led a life of learning, stimulated by her reading and by her drive to engage with the cultural and political issues of her day. As a young widow she sought to support her family through writing, and she broke new ground by pursuing a life as an author and self-publisher, producing an astonishingly large and varied body of work. Her books, owned and read by some of the most important figures of her day, addressed politics, philosophy, government, ethics, the conduct of war, autobiography and biography, and religious subjects. The God of Love’s Letter (1399), Christine de Pizan’s first defense of women, is arguably her most succinct statement about gender. It also rebukes the thirteenth-century Romance of the Rose and anticipates Christine’s City of Ladies. The Tale of the Rose (1402) responds to the growth in chivalric orders for the defense of women by arguing that women, not men, should choose members of the “Order of the Rose.” Both poems are freshly edited here from their earliest manuscripts and each is newly translated into English.

The adventures of the apostles, as recorded by Saint Luke in the New Testament, are told for young readers with vibrant and expressive four-color, comic-book style illustrations. The simple but engaging text begins where The Illustrated Gospel for Children leaves off - with Pentecost, when the followers of Jesus are transformed by the gifts of the Holy Spirit into heroic witnesses of the Resurrection of Christ. The experiences of the early Church -- the works of mercy, the miraculous healings, and the amazing conversions -- come to life in these seventeen inspiring stories of the faith and courage.
"Valerian" is a saga that every fan of Star Wars and Star Trek will identify with and love. Valerian and his beautiful, sharp-witted and sharp-tongued partner, Laureline, live adventures set against visually stunning backgrounds: complex architectural inventions, futuristic machines, otherworldly landscapes, and odd-looking aliens that are staples of artist Mezieres's seemingly boundless visual inventiveness. The stories are gripping and of epic proportion, sweeping along in trilling, hyper-space speed.

Karel Appel, A Gesture of Colour

Epilogue by Christine Buci-GlucksmannKarel Appel. A Gesture of Colour is the first of a series of six volumes, bringing together the most important writings of Jean-François Lyotard (1924 - 1998) on contemporary art and artists. The book he devoted to the art of Karel Appel (1921 - 2006) is doubtlessly one of the most complete and inspired texts of all the writings included in the series. Neither the original French manuscript nor the English translation have ever been published, and their presentation face to face should constitute a considerable plus.In this book, Lyotard presents Karel Appel's "matterism" as an offer of presence, presence deferred - it is the visual where every predicate is suspended, the visual touched, "gesture" of colour more than property of colour, appearance at the edge of the abyss. Christine Buci-Glucksmann's epilogue indicates the position of Karel Appel. A Gesture of Colour within the whole of Lyotard's writings on art, considering equally the philosopher's subsequent work.Winner of the Plantin Moretus Prize 2010 for the best designed book in the category textbooks and academic publications Photo Credits: Van Looveren & Princen
