Portrait of Jennifer

Portrait of Jennifer

Edward Epstein

Simon Schuster
2011

Much of Jennifer Jones's life was spent bathed in the glow of Hollywood's brightest lights--but in the shadows lurked the demons that can turn dreams of fame into nightmares. This never-before-told story of one of our greatest screen legends is a modern version of the Pygmalion-Galatea myth...with a shattering denouement. Capturing the joys and sorrows of a Hollywood legend, "Portrait of Jennifer" tells of a starlet dazzled by an older producer who won an Oscar for her first movie and then spent a lifetime searching for her own identity.
Edward VI

Edward VI

Jennifer Loach

Edward VI was the son of Henry VIII and his second wife, Jane Seymour. He ruled for only six years (1547-1553) and died at the age of sixteen. But these were years of fundamental importance in the history of the English state, and in particular of the English church. This new biography reveals for the first time that, despite his youth, Edward had a significant personal impact. Jennifer Loach draws a fresh portrait of the boy king as a highly precocious, well educated, intellectually confident, and remarkably decisive youth, with clear views on the future of the English church. Loach also offers a new understanding of Edward’s health, arguing that the cause of his death was a severe infection of the lungs rather than tuberculosis, the commonly accepted diagnosis. The author views Edward not as a sickly child but as a healthy and vigorous boy, devoted to hunting and tournaments like any young aristocrat of the day. This book tells the story of the monarch and of his time. It supplies the dramatic context in which the short reign of Edward VI was played out—the momentous religious changes, factional fights, and popular risings. And it offers vivid details on Edward’s increasing absorption in politics, his consciousness of his role as supreme head of the English church, his determination to lay the foundation for a Protestant regime, and how his failure in this ambition brought England to the brink of civil war.
Ecological Approaches to Early Modern English Texts

Ecological Approaches to Early Modern English Texts

Ecocriticism has steadily gained footing within the larger arena of early modern scholarship, and with the publication of well over a dozen monographs, essay collections, and special journal issues, literary studies looks increasingly ’green’; yet the field lacks a straightforward, easy-to-use guide to do with reading and teaching early modern texts ecocritically. Accessible yet comprehensive, the cutting-edge collection Ecological Approaches to Early Modern English Texts fills this gap. Organized around the notion of contact zones (or points of intersection, that have often been constructed asymmetrically-especially with regard to the human-nonhuman dichotomy), the volume reassesses current trends in ecocriticism and the Renaissance; introduces analyses of neglected texts and authors; brings ecocriticism into conversation with cognate fields and approaches (e.g., queer theory, feminism, post-coloniality, food studies); and offers a significant section on pedagogy, ecocriticism and early modern literature. Engaging points of tension and central interest in the field, the collection is largely situated in the 'and/or' that resides between presentism-historicism, materiality-literary, somatic-semiotic, nature-culture, and, most importantly, human-nonhuman. Ecological Approaches to Early Modern English Texts balances coverage and methodology; its primary goal is to provide useful, yet nuanced discussions of ecological approaches to reading and teaching a range of representative early modern texts. As a whole, the volume includes a diverse selection of chapters that engage the complex issues that arise when reading and teaching early modern texts from a green perspective.

Marilyn Monroe Unveiled: A Family History

Marilyn Monroe Unveiled: A Family History

FACT: EVERY Marilyn Monroe book EVER WRITTEN will be JUDGED BY THIS BOOK This explosive and historic must-have book will change the entire way readers view the life and death of Marilyn Monroe. Written by relatives of Marilyn Monroe, the authors painstakingly unravel the myths that have suffocated her legacy for over 50 years. These myths have been regurgitated in biography after biography, depicting Marilyn as an orphan girl and leaving her expansive lineage out of the equation. The facts support that Marilyn was surrounded with family, and many members were upstanding citizens who contributed greatly to their communities. However, Hollywood, Marilyn's New York "friends," and her therapists insulated Marilyn in order to profit off of the ultimate "Cinderella Story." That story was the myth of Marilyn Monroe, which was created to suffocate the truth behind Norma Jeane Mortenson and her family history. It was eventually this forged fairy-tale path and this cast of characters that squeezed funds out of Marilyn Monroe, as well as the final breaths out of the legendary star. The heirs of the opportunists who fleeced Marilyn of both her life and earnings still garner monies through her name today.

"The emphasis on change at many levels of organization is critically important as is the first attempt to integrate sophisticated theory and research in organization psychology (e.g., Gersick, Hackman) with social psychological models of development such as Moreland and Levine." --Reuben M. Baron, Emeritus, University of Connecticut "Arrow, McGrath, and Berdahl's 'Small Groups as Complex Systems' will change the way you think about groups, the way you think about research, and even the way you think about science." --Donelson R. Forsyth, Psychology, Virginia Commonwealth U "The book is excellent, one of those very rare works that will have substantial impact on the field. I would use the book without hesitation in any advanced graduate seminar dealing with groups." --Donelson R. Forsyth, Psychology, Virginia Commonwealth U "A conceptually elegant analysis of groups as systems. Although the systems approach has been growing more influential in various fields of social psychology in the last ten years, no one has put forward a definitive analysis that applies with fidelity the general systems approach to group processes. McGrath and his colleagues fill that gap, not by paying lip service to popular scientific concepts such as recursive causality, open systems, attractors, and complexity theory, but by fully integrating these concepts into their no-nonsense analysis of such group level processes as formation, task performance, composition, development, and termination. Empirical work is folded into the theoretical mix along the way, but the focus is unrelentingly conceptual with the result that the authors deliver on their promise of developing a powerful, unified theory of group dynamics." --Donelson R. Forsyth, Psychology, Virginia Commonwealth U "Theirs is an ambitious book. They have profound ramifications for experimental social psychology. It is worth mentioning that AMD (Arrow, McGrarth, and Berdahl) list an ethnographic approach, which often implies the adoption of hermeneutic and semiotic methods (a hallmark of the anti-Enlightenment tradition in psychology), as a possible way forward." --Yoshihisa Kashima, American Journal of Psychology What are groups? How do they behave? Arrow, McGrath, and Berdahl answer these questions by developing a general theory of small groups as complex systems. Basing their theory on concepts distilled from general systems theory, dynamical systems theory, and complexity and chaos theory, they explore groups as adaptive, dynamic systems that are driven by interactions among group members as well as between the group and its embedding contexts. In addition, they consider not only the group's members and their distribution of attributes, but also the group's tasks and technology in order to understand how those members, tasks, and tools are intertwined, coordinated, and adjusted. Throughout the book, the authors focus our attention on relationships among people, tools, and tasks that are activated by a combination of individual and collective purposes and goals that change and evolve as the group interacts over time.

The Dash Diet to End Obesity

Called the good nutrition bible by one reviewer, "The DASH Diet to End Obesity" is the ultimate guide to common sense-lifestyle changes that will improve the health of the entire family. With a special emphasis on prevention, this book is written for parents, teachers, and anyone concerned about protecting themselves and their children from the health risks of obesity. This book is the most comprehensive guide to the DASH diet plan yet published. DASH(r) - Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension - was first formulated to combat hypertension (high blood pressure). But numerous studies have shown that the eating plan is also useful for dealing with excess weight, abnormal blood fats, Type 2 diabetes, and other health concerns. The DASH diet has soared in popularity because not only does it allow people to take charge of their own health and that of their families, they can do it while eating delicious food. The plan emphasizes seasonings, spices, healthy oils, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and other flavorful food choices. But unlike a mere recipe book, "The DASH Diet to End Obesity" explains the science and psychology of how to find success with the DASH approach. Author Dr. William Manger and his three distinguished colleagues have crafted a reader-friendly book geared to motivate people to make healthy, informed changes in their daily lives. The book offers in-depth information about fats, cholesterols, vitamins and minerals, omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and more. An entire section is devoted to the role of salt and the dangers of consuming too much salt, especially for people who are overweight. The book also contains a special chapter about eating for the management of diabetes. Not only do the authors present a lot of information in an accessible tone, they provide detailed descriptions of how to incorporate this knowledge into every meal with memory strategies, charts, and quick tips. The DASH eating plan is not just a diet, however, and the book covers the importance of sleep, physical exercise, and staying psychologically motivated. The authors also dissect the reasons other diets fail, and discuss the risks and benefits of other methods of weight loss, including surgery and weight-loss drugs. This book represents the life work of the four prestigious authors; it is not a jump-on-the-bandwagon response to the recent popularity of the DASH diet. Dr. William Manger has been such a proponent of the DASH lifestyle that he has founded an organization that teaches the eating plan to young children in schools. Medical researchers and experts today are saying many parents could outlive their children because of runaway childhood obesity. This is the scenario "The DASH Diet to End Obesity" is dedicated to reversing."
