The Life and Views of Jennifer A. Mason
My book is about my personal life and views that I've encountered over the years and wanted to turn into written real-life stories. By doing this, I think it would help and inspire those who can relate to my everyday situations and struggles. Without these experiences I've encountered over the years, my book wouldn't be possible.

The Rise of a Party-State in Kenya

The Rise of a Party-State in Kenya

Jennifer A. Widner

University of California Press
1993
sidottu
Although Kenya is often considered an African success story, its political climate became increasingly repressive under its second president, Daniel arap Moi. Widner charts the transformation of the Kenya African National Union (KANU) from a weak, loosely organized political party under Jomo Kenyatta into an arm of the president's office, with "watchdog" youth wings and strong surveillance and control functions, under Moi. She suggests that single-party systems have an inherent tendency to become "party-states," or single-party regimes in which the head of state uses the party as a means of control. The speed and extent of these changes depend on the countervailing power of independent interest groups, such as business associations, farmers, or professionals. Widner's study offers important insights into the dynamics of party systems in Africa.

Crime was never cozier at Moriston House, Lord Hugo Anstead's elegant estate tucked away in the charming English countryside. A quiet Tuesday evening is shattered when their gossipy London Agent, Penny Martin, reports a murder at the newly appointed Mayfair Detective Agency. As one of society's rambling English roses, everything she said was news. Her bridge parties were the toast of the town--until slick financier James Boyle died after drinking a glass of champagne intended for Caroline Audley, whose husband died in suspicious circumstances. But was James Boyle the intended victim? A sociable gathering of suspects cloud the investigation, including her sly son, Edward Audley, whose name had gilded the crime column on numerous occasions. His strange sister, Ruth, knows more than she's letting on, and secretly held the financier responsible for her father's sudden death. Their outspoken aunt Florence savored every morsel of the murder, and arrogant architect Marcus Wetherby may have designed the perfect crime. Lord Hugo Anstead and the village sleuths are keen on the scent, as their first lady of crime, Jane Holden, unravels a dangerous plan. Elizabeth Branell-Markson, an ambitious young journalist with an eye for crime, is certain that there is a connection to the death of Caroline Audley's husband. Joined by an old friend, Chief Inspector Robert Hartley, the Mystery Society uncovers a cunning trail of deception. But will they solve the case before the murderer serves another deadly cup of crime?
A Crack in Creation: Gene Editing and the Unthinkable Power to Control Evolution
BY THE WINNER OF THE 2020 NOBEL PRIZE IN CHEMISTRY Finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize "A powerful mix of science and ethics . . . This book is required reading for every concerned citizen--the material it covers should be discussed in schools, colleges, and universities throughout the country."-- New York Review of Books Not since the atomic bomb has a technology so alarmed its inventors that they warned the world about its use. That is, until 2015, when biologist Jennifer Doudna called for a worldwide moratorium on the use of the gene-editing tool CRISPR--a revolutionary new technology that she helped create--to make heritable changes in human embryos. The cheapest, simplest, most effective way of manipulating DNA ever known, CRISPR may well give us the cure to HIV, genetic diseases, and some cancers. Yet even the tiniest changes to DNA could have myriad, unforeseeable consequences, to say nothing of the ethical and societal repercussions of intentionally mutating embryos to create "better" humans. Writing with fellow researcher Sam Sternberg, Doudna--who has since won the Nobel Prize for her CRISPR research--shares the thrilling story of her discovery and describes the enormous responsibility that comes with the power to rewrite the code of life. "The future is in our hands as never before, and this book explains the stakes like no other." -- George Lucas "An invaluable account . . . We owe Doudna several times over." -- Guardian
