Henry Rider Haggard was born at Bradenham, Norfolk, to Sir William Meybohm Rider Haggard, a barrister, and Ella Doveton, an author and poet. He was the eighth of ten children. He was initially sent to Garsington Rectory in Oxfordshire to study under the Reverend H.J. Graham but, unlike his older brothers who graduated from various Public Schools, he ended up attending Ipswich Grammar School. This was because his father, who regarded him as somebody who was not going to amount to much, could no longer afford to maintain his expensive private education. After failing his army entrance exam he was sent to a private 'crammer' in London to prepare for the entrance exam for the British Foreign Office, which in the end he never sat. Instead Haggard's father sent him to Africa in an unpaid position as assistant to the secretary to the Lieutenant-Governor of Natal, Sir Henry Bulwer. It was in this role that Haggard was present in Pretoria for the official announcement of the British annexation of the Boer Republic of the Transvaal. In fact, Haggard raised the Union Flag and was forced to read out much of the proclamation following the loss of voice of the official originally entrusted with the duty. As a young man, Haggard fell deeply in love with Lilith Jackson, whom he intended to marry once he obtained paid employment in South Africa
Jess Croft lives with sister Bessie and old Silas, a farmer raising ostriches on the great Transvaal veldt. Jess is a reserved and aloof, with a quietness about her brought on by the misfortunes of her young childhood, when she and Bessie arrived motherless from England to South Africa. Then an Englishman, Captain John Niel, arrives to try his hand at the farming life.
Jess used to be a man. Then he found himself in a female body. It wasn't funny. (Why would anyone even think it was?)*"There's a scene in Tootsie (1982) that is surely one of the most unacclaimed scenes of all time: Dustin Hoffman's character, Michael, as 'Dorothy', makes a suggestion on the set, and the director dismisses it out of hand. As I remember it, Hoffman's face-conveying surprise, confusion, indignation-shows perfectly Michael's reaction to the absence of (and, just maybe, awareness of) male privilege. The entire movie should've been about that. Just that. It wasn't. And so I wrote Jess."
The day had been very hot even for the Transvaal, where the days still know how to be hot in the autumn, although the neck of the summer is broken-especially when the thunderstorms hold off for a week or two, as they do occasionally. Even the succulent blue lilies-a variety of the agapanthus which is so familiar to us in English greenhouses-hung their long trumpet-shaped flowers and looked oppressed and miserable, beneath the burning breath of the hot wind which had been blowing for hours like the draught from a volcano. The grass, too, near the wide roadway that stretched in a feeble and indeterminate fashion across the veldt, forking, branching, and reuniting like the veins on a lady's arm, was completely coated over with a thick layer of red dust. But the hot wind was going down now, as it always does towards sunset. Indeed, all that remained of it were a few strictly local and miniature whirlwinds, which would suddenly spring up on the road itself, and twist and twirl fiercely round, raising a mighty column of dust fifty feet or more into the air, where it hung long after the wind had passed, and then slowly dissolved as its particles floated to the earth.
Jess is a novel by H. Rider Haggard set in South Africa. The book is named after Jess, one of the two orphaned nieces of a farmer in the Transvaal. "What if she should learn to love this man, and teach him to love her? To most women such a thought more or less involves the idea of marriage, and that change of status which for the most part they consider desirable ..."
A young girl and her dog Jess are being naughty in her bedroom and her father takes the dog and locks it in the shed, Rachael lets it out at night because it is crying and once again brings it up to her room, the dog is full of mud and runs amuck Rachael tries to calm the dog down but it jumps all over her bed and makes a messHer father enters her room once more and has had enough and takes the dog outside and shoots it, what happens next over many years is every time someone upsets Rachael the dog appears as a monster and kills the person, unknown to her a young policeman Joss discovers from a professor that an Egyptian Queen from 3 thousand years ago has somehow bewitched the dog. There follows many deaths related to the dog and the link is Rachael she has no idea and the police cannot find the link, but discover lots of evidence that finally find Rachael is the controller of the dog, through her thoughts and deeds, and she must dispatch the dog back to where it came from, and she is the only one who can do this. Meanwhile, she is trying to get on with her life, but things keep getting in her way, and has no idea why she is getting so much attention, and she keeps seeing her dog but cannot understand why, as the dog is dead, she knows this because her father shot it.
Haggard wrote the book in 1885, primarily in his chambers where he was working as a barrister. King Solomon's Mines had been an enormous success but Haggard says he had been "somewhat piqued by the frequent descriptions of myself as 'a mere writer of romances and boys' books' ". The book is named after Jess, one of the two orphaned nieces of a farmer in the Transvaal.
Jess is a young man who gives his all to be successful, but he is to find it is his own shortcomings that are his downfall. He loves his family and home, but is torn between his earlier life, travel and home. He spends years looking for something, until one day when he figures it out. This is a total work of fiction. All names are a figment of my imagination.
