Water, Sanitary and Waste Services for Buildings

Water, Sanitary and Waste Services for Buildings

A.F.E. Wise; John Swaffield

Routledge
2020

Water, sanitary and waste services represent a substantial proportion of the cost of construction, averaging 10% of the capital costs of building and with continuing costs in operation and maintenance. Nevertheless, they are often regarded as a 'Cinderella' within the building process. Parts of many different codes and regulations impact on these services, making an overall viewpoint more difficult to get. This new edition of this classic text draws together material from a variety of sources to provide the comprehensive coverage not available elsewhere. It is a resource for the sound design, operation and maintenance of these services and should be on the bookshelf of every building services engineer and architect.

The Physiology of Industry

The Physiology of Industry

John Atkinson Hobson; A F Mummery

White Press

First published in 1889, "The Physiology of Industry" is an influential treatise by British economist on John Atkinson Hobson that outlines some of the key areas of his theory of underconsumption. Within it, Hobson analyses the nature of production by considering the influence of the supply of gold on the economy, the connection between consumption and wealth, and the law of supply and demand. Contents include: "Scope of Production", "Quantitative Relation of Wealth to Consumption", "The Physiology of Production - The Law of Supply and Demand", "Over-production and Economic Checks", "Expansion and Contraction of Trade", "The Law of the Limiting Requisite", "Scarcity of Gold as an Economic Factor", etc. John Atkinson Hobson (1858 - 1940) was an English social scientist and economist most famous for his work on imperialism-which notably had an influence on Vladimir Lenin-as well as his theory of underconsumption. His early work also questioned the classical theory of rent and predicted the Neoclassical "marginal productivity" theory of distribution. Other notable works by this author include: "Evolution of Modern Capitalism" (1894), "Problem of the Unemployed" (1896), and "John Ruskin: Social Reformer" (1898). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with the original text and artwork.
Clinician’s Guide to Spirituality

Clinician’s Guide to Spirituality

This new series is directed to healthcare professionals who increasingly need information on holistic approaches to chronic illness in response to the growing demand from patients. Managed care has deferred responsibility for initial diagnosis and treatment of chronic conditions to primary care physicians and other healthcare professionals. The University of California's Institute for Health and Aging predicts that by 2020, 134 million Americans will have some form of chronic condition that will cause personal limitations or disabilities. Only about 33% of these patients will be "elderly". This book describes a method of spirituality that is independent of any religious affiliation and informs the clinican how to apply spirituality to help in the management of chronic illness. The authors, a physician and a chaplain, describe both spirituality and chronic illness. Each spiritual theme can benefit both the patient and healthcare provider as they partner for healing. The book provides a simple, universal definition of spirituality focusing on the quality of relationships between patients and their higher powers. Bullet points at the end of chapters provide ideas for using each principle to improve clinical practice and the 12 spiritual principles, with their origins in the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, provide a practical and successful model for improving quality of life.

This study examines contingency purchases made in theater to support U.S. Air Force activities during Operation Iraqi Freedom in fiscal years 2003 and 2004. It develops a custom database to determine the types of goods and services purchased and illustrates how such data can be used to facilitate planning and policy decisions associated with future CCO staffing and training, combat support, and sharing of lessons within the theater.
The U.S. Army/Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Field Manual

The U.S. Army/Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Field Manual

United States Army; John A. Nagl; James F. Amos; David H. Petraeus

University of Chicago Press

When the U.S. military invaded Iraq, it lacked a common understanding of the problems inherent in counterinsurgency campaigns. It had neither studied them, nor developed doctrine and tactics to deal with them. It is fair to say that in 2003, most Army officers knew more about the U.S. Civil War than about counterinsurgency. This volume was written to fill that void. The result of unprecedented collaboration among top U.S. military experts, scholars, and practitioners in the field, the manual espouses an approach to combat that emphasizes constant adaptation and learning, the importance of decentralized decision making, the need to understand local politics and customs, and the key role of intelligence in winning the support of the population. The manual also emphasizes the paradoxical and often counterintuitive nature of counterinsurgency operations: sometimes the more you protect your forces, the less secure you are; sometimes the more force you use, the less effective it is; sometimes doing nothing is the best reaction. A new introduction by Sarah Sewall, director of the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, places the manual in critical and historical perspective, explaining the significance and potential impact of this revolutionary challenge to conventional U.S. military doctrine. An attempt by our military to redefine itself in the aftermath of 9/11 and the new world of international terrorism, "The U.S. Army/Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Field Manual" will play a vital role in American military campaigns for years to come.
