The famous historical compendium of Christians who sacrificed themselves for their faith over many centuries is presented here, complete. At times uplifting, at times harrowing, but in its entirety compelling and worthwhile reading, Fox's Book of Martyrs is a work of supreme Christian devotion. It catalogs the rise to prominence, and deaths, of many Christian saints and martyrs who placed their faith above all else. Many were, under penalty of torture and death, told to give up their beliefs: by refusing, they proved themselves to be of the highest devotion. When this book was published in 1563, the Christian church was in the throes of schism: the Reformation was proceeding at a fast pace, creating the first denominational forks in Christianity. The rise of Protestantism, and the attempts by the Catholic Church at preventing a split and consequent loss of authority, left a marked impression upon John Fox. His opinions of organized Christianity were never without criticism, and it was partly out of desire to remind all Christians of what true belief entails that he penned his masterwork. Committed to the truth of his investigations, Fox includes the martyrs of the early Christians who were persecuted by the Romans, plus the Protestant Christians who found themselves victim to Catholic persecution. The ruthless politics of the era, such as King Henry VIII's purging of the monasteries of England, also receive chapters. Fox does not shy from detail; the most wonderful moments of each martyr's life, and the sometimes gruesome nature of their deaths, are told frankly. Over the centuries, and given the great fame this book garnered, various additions were made to the text. For this edition, the publisher has striven to present the text of the original 16th century version together with the most acclaimed and accepted additions made up until the early 19th century. As such we gain knowledge of oppression suffered by the Quakers, and of other Christian groups and personages until the time of the Napoleonic Wars.
But it may be asked, is popery the same system now as in the days of Cardinal Bonner and the "Bloody Mary." We answer yes. It is the boast of all catholics that their church never varies, either in spirit or in practice. For evidence of this, look at the demonstrations of her spirit in the persecutions in the south of France, for several years after the restoration of the Bourbons, in 1814. All have witnessed with feelings of detestation, the recent efforts of the apostolicals in Spain and Portugal, to crush the friends of civil and religious liberty in those ill-fated countries. The narrative of Asaad Shidiak, clearly indicates that the spirit of popery, has lost none of its ferocity and bloodthirstiness since the Piedmontese war, and the Bartholomew massacre. Where it has power, its victims are still crushed by the same means which filled the dungeons of the inquisition, and fed the fires of the auto de fe.

Fox's Book of Martyrs or A History of the Lives, Sufferings, and Triumphant Deaths of the Primitive Protestant Martyrs. From the Introduction of Christianity to the Latest Periods of Pagan, Popish, and Infidel Persecutions. The object of this work, is to give a brief history of persecution since the first introduction of christianity, till the present time. In doing this, we have commenced with the martyrdom of Stephen, and following the course of events, have brought the History of persecution down to the year 1830. In all ages, we find that a disposition to persecute for opinion's sake, has been manifested by wicked men, whatever may have been their opinions or sentiments on religious subjects. The intolerant jew, and the bigoted pagan, have exhibited no more of a persecuting spirit, than the nominal professor of christianity, and the infidel and the avowed atheist.

The Actes and Monuments by Foxe, John , sometimes referred to as Foxe's Book of Martyrs is a masterpiece of Protestant martyrology and history. It contains a polemical narrative of the persecution Protestants endured at the hands of the Catholic Church. The book had a significant impact on common conceptions of Catholicism in England and Scotland."Persecutions, awful tribulations, the suffering of martyrs, and other similar things incident... in England and Scotland, and all other foreign nations," is what is described in the book. The title ends with "in this kingdom of England and Scotland as partially as to all other distant nations apparteynyng," once more leaving the specific church in question.Tales of valiant bravery and triumphant faith. Tales about Christ and God's love. Stories of how God's incredible grace enabled men, women, and children to survive persecution and frequently horrifying deaths.
A frenzied account of the persecution of Protestants in Europe in the 16th century, and one of the most famous pieces of propaganda ever written There are few more potent books than Foxe's Book of Martyrs. Innumerable English and Scottish Protestant homes had a copy, and in many ways, it is the founding document of a new identity that emerged under Elizabeth I. In vigorous, outraged prose, Foxe dramatized the "persecutions and horrible troubles" of those who had fallen victim to the Catholics, with lurid details and illustrations intended to whip up the reader's sense of horror and disgust. Foxe's extraordinary book is a great work of propaganda, a founding Protestant text and a work of serious scholarship, as well as a mish-mash of half-truths and outrageous assertions. This selection from Foxe, with a full introduction, notes, and reproductions of key illustrations, will be essential for anyone wishing to understand not only Elizabethan Britain, but also the core ideology that would underpin British anti-Catholicism as well as distance from, suspicion of and distate for continental Europe--an aversion that would last for centuries.
'Be of good comfort, Master Ridley, and play the man: we shall this day light such a candle by God's grace in England, as, I trust, shall never be put out.' Hugh Latimer's famous words of consolation to Nicholas Ridley as they are both about to be burnt alive for heresy come from John Foxe's magisterial Acts and Monuments, popularly known as the Book of Martyrs. This vast collection of unforgettable accounts of religious persecution exerted as great an influence on early modern England and New England as the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer. It contains many stirring stories of the apprehension, interrogation, imprisonment, and execution of alleged heretics. The narratives not only attest to the fortitude of individuals who suffered for their faith not many years before the birth of Shakespeare, but they also constitute exciting tales filled with graphic details and verbal wit. This modernized selection also includes some of the famous woodcuts that illustrated the original text, as well as providing a comprehensive introduction to Foxe's life and times and the martyrology narrative. An updated and modernized edition of the unparalleled classic with resurgent relevance for the twenty-first century Foxe's Book of Martyrs is one of the most influential and well-known books in history, as well as one of the top-sellers of the past, right up there with the Bible itself. Immensely popular in Foxe's own sixteenth century, its influence has been felt throughout literature. Copies of the original text (Acts and Monuments) were chained beside the Bible in churches of England, and even sailed with English pirates. This was not a book designed to comfort, but instead to present the truth of the persecution faced by Protestant Christians in hostile environments. The inscription from the 1563 edition--now commonly known as Foxe's Book of Martyrs--indicates the gravity of the task: "[In] latter and perilous days . . . the great persecutions and horrible troubles . . . [are here] gathered and collected according to true copies and writings . . . of the parties themselves that suffered." Foxe was committed to commemorating the ultimate sacrifice of those who gave their lives for the sake of their faith. Paul L. Maier brings his exceptional mind for history to bear on Foxe's work in this new edition. While abridgement of the original 2,100 pages was necessary, Maier does include every martyr, and text was changed only where modern readers may not readily understand the original archaic wording. John Foxe (1516-1587) was an academic and zealous student of the Scriptures, leading to his persecution as a Protestant by the Catholic rulers of his day. Beyond his work in pastoral ministry, Foxe continued to work on his martyrology until his death.
