Hell on the Doorstep

Hell on the Doorstep

February, 2009, in the midst of Australia's worst ever bushfire disaster, Jan Graham asked the question: "What can I do to help?" She had no idea that this question would lead her and her husband, John, into three years of intense relief work, helping survivors of the Black Saturday Fires. This is not another bushfire story, though that is the setting. This is a story about how a local church and community responded in the face of crisis, and it asks the question, are there still fires burning today? What trauma and pain in our society is right on our doorstep, and can the church and community still respond, as it did back in 2009? "Hell on the Doorstep provides a poignant challenge ... that all of us be moved to practical and loving action; that all of us respond with a 'yes' to the mess." Pastor Jon Cathie "This story of collective support from the community in times of adversity will remind readers that: alone we can do so little, but together, we can do so much." Maximize Reward and Minimize Risk with Modern C++ Embracing Modern C++ Safely shows you how to make effective use of the new and enhanced language features of modern C++ without falling victim to their potential pitfalls. Based on their years of experience with large, mission-critical projects, four leading C++ authorities divide C++11/14 language features into three categories: Safe, Conditionally Safe, and Unsafe. Safe features offer compelling value, are easy to use productively, and are relatively difficult to misuse. Conditionally safe features offer significant value but come with risks that require significant expertise and familiarity before use. Unsafe features have an especially poor risk/reward ratio, are easy to misuse, and are beneficial in only the most specialized circumstances. This book distills the C++ community's years of experience applying C++11 and C++14 features and will help you make effective and safe design decisions that reflect real-world, economic engineering tradeoffs in large-scale, diverse software development environments. The authors use examples derived from real code bases to illustrate every finding objectively and to illuminate key issues. Each feature identifies the sound use cases, hidden pitfalls, and shortcomings of that language feature. After reading this book, you will Understand what each C++11/14 feature does and where it works bestRecognize how to work around show-stopping pitfalls and annoying corner casesKnow which features demand additional training, experience, and peer reviewGain insights for preparing coding standards and style guides that suit your organization's needsBe equipped to introduce modern C++ incrementally and judiciously into established code bases Seasoned C++ developers, team leads, and technical managers who want to improve productivity, code quality, and maintainability will find the insights in this modular, meticulously organized reference indispensable. Part I presents the results from the 2001 research project combining surface surveys and limited test excavations at eight Early Bronze Age (c. 3600-2000 BC) settlement sites identified in a previous survey by Miller (1991) on the Kerak Plateau. The team collected data to determine the suitability of these sites for a future, multi-year research project, and to assess the applicability of an alternative perspective for reconstructing the nature of the earliest walled towns in the southern Levant. Aside from documenting the state of preservation of these sites, the proposed research sought to evaluate propositions about (1) the nature of the chronological development of urbanism within the region, and (2) the relationship between environmental and ecological zones and the scale of urban settlements in the region. Includes 27 figures. Part II is the editio princeps of two early alphabetic inscriptions discovered by John and Deborah Darnell along the Farshut Road, Wadi el-Hol, near Luxor, Egypt. The work includes photographs, drawings and discussions of the inscriptions, together with a discussion of the source of the signs and significance of the find. The authors argue that the discovery of these inscriptions points to the origins of the alphabet in an Egyptian context as long ago as 2000 BC. Includes 22 figures and 13 plates.

American Carnage features five writers from the horror/pop culture website Psycho Drive-In, telling original tales of dystopian science fiction and horror in Post-Trumpocalypsian settings. John E. Meredith's " What Kind of Monster Are You?" offers a unique take on a classic science fiction trope: aliens are coming to steal our women But this time, they've got a distinctly more sinister endgame in mind. Rick Shingler's "The Day the World Turned Day-Glo" is set after a major new technology has effectively made sunlight a commodity. And the only person who can do anything about it is alone on the moon. Dan Lee's "None but the Brave" follows the adventures of a sociopathic anti-terrorist agent in a future where nobody's minds are safe from observation - not even after death. R. Mike Burr's "Where Eagles Dare" is set the day after tomorrow as an unnamed protagonist comes under scrutiny by ill-intentioned patriots. Lastly, Paul Brian McCoy's "Big Takeover" continues the adventures of the protagonists of his novel The Unraveling, as they take a trip into the dreaming mind of the President in order to save him, and the country, from potential apocalypse. These five stories range from straight science fiction to existential horror to trash/schlock splatter. If you're feeling anxiety over the state of the world, these stories might not alleviate that worry, but they will definitely inspire, and disgust, you, all at the same time

Having retaken Santa Fe by force of arms late in 1693, Diego de Vargas faces unrelenting challenges, waging active warfare against defiant Pueblo Indian resisters while maintaining peace with Pueblo allies; providing homes, food, and supplies for 1,500 unsure colonists; and bidding unceasingly for greater support from viceregal authorities in Mexico City.At the head of combined units of Spanish and Pueblo fighting men, the governor in 1694 leads repeated assaults on castle-like fortified sites. Through combat, prisoner exchange, and negotiation, he reestablishes the kingdom. Franciscans reopen some of the missions. Vargas founds the villa of Santa Cruz de la Canada. Pueblos north and west of Santa Fe rebel again in 1696; wearily, Vargas reports more blood on the boulders.Through The Journals of don Diego de Vargas, translated from official and private correspondence, we are drawn back, through conflict and compromise, into New Mexico's formative era.

John Meredyth Lucas, son of silent screen star and screenwriter Bess Meredyth (Ben-Hur, The Sea Beast, When a Man Loves, Don Juan) and stepson of renowned Hungarian-born director Michael Curtiz (Casablanca, Mildred Pierce, Yankee Doodle Dandy, Life with Father), came of age in Hollywood during the 1930s. Lucas went on to an impressive career of his own as a writer-producer-director. He made films with Hal Wallis, Ross Hunter, Walt Disney, and others, and he wrote, produced, and directed such classic television series as Mannix, The Fugitive and Star Trek. Completed shortly before his death in 2002, Lucas' memoir is filled with never-before-told recollections of many Hollywood greats and features previously unpublished photographs. With Lucas, we go behind the scenes, onto the studio lots and into the parties with family friends John Barrymore, Joan Crawford, Errol Flynn and Jack Warner, to name just a few. It's a boy's-eye-view of Hollywood in a time of glamour, decadence, and the golden years of filmmaking.
