Medieval Religious Women in the Low Countries

Medieval Religious Women in the Low Countries

Scheepsma Wybren; Johnson David F.

The Boydell Press
2002
sidottu
In the last decades of the fourteenth century a new religious movement arose in the northern Low Countries, the so-called Modern Devotion, which had a major influence upon religious life in Europe, and wasparticularly popular with women. Until now there has been no study of the women who played a part in the movement, but this book seeks to fill the gap through a case study of the Chapter of Windesheim and the mystical and religious texts its sisters produced, typical of the female spiritual experience of the Modern Devotion. The author analyses texts by such important canonesses as Salome Sticken, Alijt Bake and Jacominje Costers, placing them in the context of daily life in the convent; the anonymous sisterbook of the largest convent at Diepenveen also proves a rich source of historical information. Although the women were all concerned with improving religious life in their convents, their ways of doing so are shown to have varied dramatically, leading to conflict with both other members of the convent, and the male leaders of the Chapter; significant in this regard is Bake's vision of a mystical spirituality, which ultimately led to her ejection from the convent and exile. WYBREN SCHEEPSMA teaches Dutch language at the Hogeschool Leiden.

This catalogue highlights one of the most significant private collections of Cypriot antiquities in the world. This handsome catalogue accompanies the opening of a new gallery at the Kykkos Monastery Museum, created to house the David Johnson Collection of Cypriot antiquities. Until it's donated to the museum, the David Johnson Collection was among the most significant private collections of Cypriot antiquities in the world. The Johnson Collection spans some 2,500 years, from the Middle Chalcolithic period to the beginning of the Classical era (c. 480 BC), with a particular strength in Early and Middle Bronze Age material. Comprising mainly pottery, it also includes bronze and stone artifacts, as well as some early coinage. Most pieces originate from tomb contexts and, like much Cypriot material in circulation, were likely removed through illicit excavation. Cyprus remains one of the most heavily looted archaeological landscapes in the world. The repatriation of the Johnson Collection represents a small but meaningful act of restitution – ensuring the collection’s integrity while returning it to its cultural home. With detailed entries and beautiful photography of every object, this catalogue serves as a permanent record of the collection.

A broad, integrative, unique overview of group dynamics, Joining Together bridges the gap between theory, research, and practice, and combines a conceptual understanding of group dynamics with what’s needed to develop effective small group skills. In it readers are involved in the content that combines the theoretical and empirical knowledge now available on group dynamics with practical ways to apply that knowledge in groups to which readers actually belong. Constructed so that the theory and research on group dynamics is taught experientially through exercises and simulations included in the book, Joining Together provides the ideal combination for ensuring success in working with groups. Accessible, clear, and practical, it gives students the tools and skills they need to be effective group members and to ensure the effectiveness of any group to which they belong.
Shakespeare and South Africa

Shakespeare and South Africa is a lively and topical study of the teaching and criticism of Shakespeare in South Africa from the early nineteenth century to the present day, covering a number of key historical moments in the interpretation of Shakespeare. David Johnson's work makes a valuable contribution to the well-established debate focused on the `neo-colonial' use of `English Literature' and to the more recent interest in the conditions of cultural assimilation. Johnson's wide range of source materials - including Cape Department of Eduacation examination papers and exam reports, as well as newspaper articles and essays - provides detailed and original research into the formualtion of a literary education policy in South Africa. The perceptive insights into changes in thinking about pedagogic and cultural issues in the South African colonial 'periphery' and into the values associated with those changes makes for fascinating reading, and a significant resource for South African cultural studies.

Acknowledged as the most comprehensive, easy-to-read introduction to social welfare policy available, Social Welfare: Politics and Public Policy, 8/e, emphasizes the current political aspects of policy making and major social welfare programs, including public assistance, Social Security, disability, health insurance, child welfare, and much more. Social Welfare does more than describe the major social welfare policies and programs; it also tackles the conflict and controversies involved in the processes and outcomes of policy making. It contrasts rational and political approaches to policy making, policy analysis, policy implementation, and policy evaluation. The authors present conflicting perspectives, encouraging readers to think critically, to debate, and to consider their own views on issues. KEY TOPICS: Core policy topics such as race, gender, sexual orientation, income and wealth inequality, poverty, health insurance, immigration, and disability rights are addressed. Both historical and current information is covered, including issues surrounding incidents such as the police shooting and subsequent death of an African American teen in Ferguson, MO, and Supreme Court decisions on controversial topics such as healthcare, gay rights, and immigration. Social Welfare compares the U.S. to other countries on social policy topics such as poverty, child and family policy, and healthcare. MARKET: Social Welfare has been used by tens of thousands of policy students and hundreds of professors in social work, government/political science, sociology, and public affairs departments and schools.

The need for greater agricultural output throughout the world has led to the increasing use of business management techniques to obtain the best returns from agricultural resources. "The Business of Farming" is a basic textbook on farm management for diploma and degree students, farmers and farm managers in tropical and subtropical regions. Clearly and simply written, it covers the whole field of financial, personnel, production and marketing management as it applies to both large-scale, commercial farming and small-scale, mainly subsistence, farming. It assumes no previous knowledge of economics, finance or management and includes numerous worked examples, from throughout the tropics, illustrating different techniques for solving farm management problems. For this second edition, the author has undertaken a major revision and updating of the reading lists, and has made numerous smaller amendments and improvements throughout the text.

All the Way with LBJ mines an extraordinarily rich but underutilized source – the full range of LBJ tapes – to analyze the 1964 presidential campaign and the political culture of the mid-1960s. The president achieved a smashing victory over a divided Republican Party, which initially considered Henry Cabot Lodge II, then US ambassador to South Vietnam, before nominating Barry Goldwater, who used many of the themes that later worked for Republicans – a Southern strategy, portraying the Democrats as soft on defence, raising issues such as crime and personal ethics. Johnson countered with what he called a 'frontlash' strategy, appealing to moderate and liberal GOP suburbanites, but he failed to create a new, permanent Democratic majority for the post–civil rights era. The work's themes – the impact of race on the political process, the question of politicians' personal and political ethics, and the tensions between politics and public policy – continue to resonate.
Congress and the Cold War

Congress and the Cold War

Robert David Johnson

Cambridge University Press

The first historical interpretation of the congressional response to the entire Cold War. Using a wide variety of sources, including several manuscript collections opened specifically for this study, the book challenges the popular and scholarly image of a weak Cold War Congress, in which the unbalanced relationship between the legislative and executive branches culminated in the escalation of the US commitment in Vietnam, which in turn paved the way for a congressional resurgence best symbolized by the passage of the War Powers Act in 1973. Instead, understanding the congressional response to the Cold War requires a more flexible conception of the congressional role in foreign policy, focused on three facets of legislative power: the use of spending measures; the internal workings of a Congress increasingly dominated by subcommittees; and the ability of individual legislators to affect foreign affairs by changing the way that policymakers and the public considered international questions.
