This book serves as a practical introduction to integrating mindfulness-based practices in therapy, with a focus on assessing whether it is appropriate to use or adapt mindfulness activities to the specific cultural identity or identities of clients. Eastern spirituality has exerted considerable influence on the fields of counseling and psychology through the use of mindfulness-based practices. Interventions can be adapted to account for clients' religious/spiritual identity, gender norms, racial/ethnic background, community values and pressures, personality traits, unfamiliarity with mindfulness-based practices, cognitive flexibility, and individual life experiences. The authors present an approach to integrating mindfulness in therapy that emphasizes cultural humility, which combines an accurate view of oneself (including limits in one's awareness, knowledge, and skills for working with individuals from diverse groups) with the ability to cultivate an amp quot other-oriented amp quot stance, thus enhancing one's ability to work with clients from a variety of cultural backgrounds. By incorporating this client-centered approach, therapists will be better able to align the therapy process with clients' values, narratives about change, and therapy goals.

Since it was first published in 1995, Photonic Crystals has remained the definitive text for both undergraduates and researchers on photonic band-gap materials and their use in controlling the propagation of light. This newly expanded and revised edition covers the latest developments in the field, providing the most up-to-date, concise, and comprehensive book available on these novel materials and their applications. Starting from Maxwell's equations and Fourier analysis, the authors develop the theoretical tools of photonics using principles of linear algebra and symmetry, emphasizing analogies with traditional solid-state physics and quantum theory. They then investigate the unique phenomena that take place within photonic crystals at defect sites and surfaces, from one to three dimensions. This new edition includes entirely new chapters describing important hybrid structures that use band gaps or periodicity only in some directions: periodic waveguides, photonic-crystal slabs, and photonic-crystal fibers. The authors demonstrate how the capabilities of photonic crystals to localize light can be put to work in devices such as filters and splitters. A new appendix provides an overview of computational methods for electromagnetism. Existing chapters have been considerably updated and expanded to include many new three-dimensional photonic crystals, an extensive tutorial on device design using temporal coupled-mode theory, discussions of diffraction and refraction at crystal interfaces, and more. Richly illustrated and accessibly written, Photonic Crystals is an indispensable resource for students and researchers. * Extensively revised and expanded * Features improved graphics throughout * Includes new chapters on photonic-crystal fibers and combined index-and band-gap-guiding * Provides an introduction to coupled-mode theory as a powerful tool for device design * Covers many new topics, including omnidirectional reflection, anomalous refraction and diffraction, computational photonics, and much more.
Evidence–Based Practices for Christian Counseling and Psychotherapy

Are Christian treatments as effective as secular treatments? What is the evidence to support its success? Christians engaged in the fields of psychology, psychotherapy and counseling are living in a unique moment. Over the last couple decades, these fields have grown more and more open to religious belief and religion-accommodative therapies. At the same time, Christian counselors and psychotherapists encounter pressure (for example, from insurance companies) to demonstrate that their accommodative therapies are as beneficial as secular therapies. This raises the need for evidence to support Christian practices and treatments. The essays gathered in this volume explore evidence-based Christian treatments, practices, factors and principles. The authors mine the relevant research and literature to update practicing psychotherapists, clinical researchers, students, teachers and educated laypersons about the efficacy of certain Christian-accommodative therapies. Topics covered in the book include: devotional meditationcognitive-behavior therapypsychodynamic and process-experiential therapiescouples, marriage and family therapygroup intervention The book concludes with a review of the evidence for the various treatments discussed in the chapters, a guide for conducting clinical trials that is essential reading for current or aspiring researchers, and reflections by the editors about the future of evidence-based Christian practices. As the editors say, "more research is necessary." To that end, this volume is a major contribution to a field of inquiry that, while still in its infancy, promises to have enormous implications for future work in Christian counseling and psychotherapy. Christian Association for Psychological Studies (CAPS) Books explore how Christianity relates to mental health and behavioral sciences including psychology, counseling, social work, and marriage and family therapy in order to equip Christian clinicians to support the well-being of their clients.

Two Time Award WinnerFirst Place Winner of the 2020 Writer's Digest Self-Published E-Book Award for Fantasy 2021 Readers' Favorite Honorable Mention in the Fiction - Fantasy - General Reader's Favorite 5-Star ReviewsDivine Zape - "Witch'n features elaborately developed characters and fascinating world-building. The dialogues are well-written and the author's meticulous care for plot elements infuses the story with great entertainment."K. C. Finn - "Author Joshua Braun has crafted a completely enchanting work of fiction with plenty of wit to offer readers. One of the features which I found particularly impressive about this piece was its styling, voice, and attitude, which make the author just as important as the story in a way that Sir Terry Pratchett would be proud of. I adored the character development, dynamics, and tongue-in-cheek humor."Ruffina Oserio - " Witch'n is well-plotted and the pacing is fast; there are twists that I didn't see coming and the unpredictability in plot development makes the story a page-turning read. The descriptions are vivid and strong and from the very beginning, the reader is presented with horrifying images of the aftermath of evil magic. Joshua Braun's novel is intelligently plotted and superbly executed."Foluso Falaye - With an ingenious blend of dark humor and fantasy, Witch'n grabs the reader and holds their attention from start to finish. I couldn't put it down as I was arrested by the protagonist's energetic personality and her unbelievable evilness. It's nothing like I've seen before... prepare for a wild, dark, different, and memorable experience "It's all very well and good destroying the world, extinguishing any spark of hope, and ruling with an iron grip of fear and black magic. But nobody told the witch that running an administration of evil would be just so... dreary. Bored with solving little people's problems and the petty squabbles of her beastly advisors, the witch quits, leaving the world in a much worse state than she found it with a new evil quest. It's time to learn how to be a good person. There's just one teensy-tiny little problem... Being good doesn't come easily - after all, it's much easier to sacrifice babies and summon hideous demons to get things done. Seeking out her old nemesis, a legendary-hero-turned-academic (who she only imprisoned and tortured a little bit), she gives him an outlandish proposition: to help her make a dazzling transformation from wicked witch to good. It's an offer he can't refuse. The odd couple have a long, perilous journey ahead of them and a lot of psychological hang-ups to work through. Can an evil witch ever truly be reformed - and what could possibly go wrong when you're relying on your nemesis to be your BFF? Witch'n is a rip-roaring high fantasy satire with razor-sharp wit and penetrating social critique that fans of Terry Pratchett will find irresistible. If you love vulnerable wicked witches, bizarre monster encounters, and debating the morality of baby sacrifice, then this novel is for you.

Ages 9-12
"Where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God." Ruth's response to her mother-in-law Naomi demonstrated both Ruth's loyalty to her family and her trust in God. The Reformers of the sixteenth century found theological significance in such Old Testament narratives. For example, German Lutheran pastor and theologian Johannes Brenz perceived in her confession a foreshadowing of the gospel: "Ruth the Moabitess is recorded in the genealogy of Christ, that it might be made known that Christ belongs not only to the Jews but also to the Gentiles." In this volume of the Reformation Commentary on Scripture, N. Scott Amos guides readers through a wealth of early modern commentary on the Old Testament books of Joshua, Judges, and Ruth. Readers will hear from familiar voices and discover lesser-known figures from a diversity of theological traditions, including Lutherans, Reformed, Radicals, Anglicans and Roman Catholics. Drawing upon a variety of resources—from commentaries and sermons to treatises and confessions—much of which appears here for the first time in English, this volume provides resources for contemporary preachers, enables scholars to better understand the depth and breadth of Reformation commentary, and seeks to encourage all those who would, like Ruth, declare their allegiance to God.

MEND - Movement for the Emancipation of the Nigerian Delta ______ "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It depends on who is looking at us. To the oppressed impoverished people of the niger delta, we are angels. If we are terrorists to the oil companies and the nigerian government, so be it. Our intention is to chase out the oil companies from the niger delta and if it takes terror to achieve this objective, we will very well employ that option." JOMO GBOMO This Graphic Novel casts light on many bloody shores, depicting war, adversary, anger, hatred, current events, oil crises, war in Nigeria and the plight of the country's downtrodden civilizations over the last 30 years - mostly the story of the People's Militia, corrupt government and Big Oil. The parameters of this graphic novel are endless; The story is from BBC World News, and features unadulterated, direct statements from the MEND militia leader and scholar - who interacts with the outside world under the alias: "JOMO GBOMO". Direct stories from daily updates have been covered extensively by the BBC, and Vanity Fair contributing writer Sebastian Junger. My initial interest from these updates came from my personal use of Mozilla Firefox webrowser's beautifully integrated BBC News in my tool bar. As my interest in the hidden shadows of the struggle between M.E.N.D and their avowed enemies grew, I began to graphically represent the chills running down my spine as I read on and on. Low-resolution, grainy images flowed daily across my screen, alternating between tinged insights and hammering revelations concerning the battles being fought over the world's top oil-producing region - The Nigerian Delta. Mystical powers claimed by members of MEND; such as the ability of the protection given to them by life in the jungle and their cause - exhibited by a leaf worn across the forehead, and other claims of drinking battery acid and emerging unharmed. MEND Is representative of a four month period of my life invested into depicting these stories as told in articles and transcribed from BBC World News, ABC News, The Guardian and various other resources, through to interviews with Jomo Gbomo, conducted via laptop from M.E.N.D's mysterious and elusive campsites, deep in the Nigerian Delta. The more I read in the headlines the more I drew, and I continue to want to do so. These struggles for oil and freedom from oppression - adventurous kidnappings, oil rig seizures, and background stories of the Nigerians lives- they could fill years of reading. With some panels traditional and others abstract, this graphic novel is cohesively designed and aims principally at telling a story of current events in a format that will bring world news to an interesting light for classrooms and adults. Too often, the side of the revolutionary is not told until after the storm has settled and the rights and wrongs have been enshrined in the annals of the victorious. And How Does That Make You Feel?: Everything You (N)Ever Wanted to Know about Therapy
Joshua Fletcher

Psychotherapist Josh Fletcher takes us on a tour of the inner mind of a therapist--revealing a hilariously candid point of view on the therapeutic process, a practical guide to therapy, and maybe a few more cobwebs and dark corners than one might expect. It's everything you ever wanted to know about therapy (and maybe a few things you didn't). Trauma, heartbreak, anxiety, and mourning are all parts of the human experience, and Josh Fletcher's mission in life is to normalize the need to find a trusted professional with whom you can discuss all of life's scariest aspects. Through the lens of four of his patients--Daphne, a wildly successful actor who still struggles to find contentment; Levi, an intim-idating bouncer with obsessive tendencies who's trapped in a sex cult; Zahra, an anxious, people-pleasing doctor in the midst of unpacking serious trauma; and Noah, a shy newcomer with some major closet skeletons--you'll share in their self-discovery and recovery as they untangle themselves from an all-too-familiar web of emotions. In between sessions, Fletcher struggles to balance his own well-being with that of his patients as details from his sometimes messy but always heartfelt personal life reveal that therapists aren't immune to getting tripped up by the same hurdles as the rest of us. And How Does That Make You Feel? is a primer on what to expect from therapy, how to find the right therapist, and the most common afflictions treated in therapy (such as depression, OCD, and panic attacks) as well as a darkly hilarious narrative about what's going on in your thera-pist's mind before, during, and after your session. Above all, it's filled with the promise that a better future is always possible . . . if we're willing to seek help and do the work.
The book of Joshua is often troubling -- what should we make of the fact that the violent occupation of land is not simply presented, but celebrated? How can we reconcile that with the key role the book plays in the biblical drama of salvation? What should we make of the God of Joshua? / In this volume Gordon McConville and Stephen Williams interpret Joshua in relation to Christian theology, addressing such questions and placing the book in its proper place in the canonical whole. McConville deals specifically with the commentary and exegesis of the text. Williams then moves in to focus on issues of interpretation. He addresses key theological themes, such as land, covenant, law, miracle, judgment (with the problem of genocide), and idolatry. / The authors posit that the theological topics engaged in Joshua are not limited to the horizons of the author and first readers of the book, but that Joshua is part of a much larger testimony which concerns readers yet today.

Provides a nontechnical reference source of the relevant social science and policy literature on nanotechnology. The authors hope to engender not only a greater appreciation of the economic and social benefits of nanotechnology but also to encourage more extensive research and public support of this technology.Section 2 briefly overviews U.S. policy initiatives related to nanotechnology and to the systematic investment in research that the U.S. Congress has approved to advance it over the nearly past two decades. Section 3 summarizes these U.S. research investments into nanotechnology and compares dimensions of nanotechnology activity in the United States to activity in other countries. Section 4 offers a taxonomy and overview of the relevant social science and policy literature related to nanotechnology. The taxonomy is a subjective classifying device for tracking the growth of this literature over time; the overview is a descriptive summary of how researchers in these disciplines have characterized the practice of nanotechnology. The appendix to this monograph presents an annotated bibliography of this literature. The extensive annotated bibliography fills a gap in the literature because the reviews that exist are limited in scope, and the review points out the lack of policy research related to public investments in nanotechnology. Finally, Section 5 suggests specific directions for future policy research with a focus on a methodology for evaluating the social benefits of publicly funded nanotechnology R&D investments.
