Established outside Columbus, Georgia, in October 1918 by the United States Army as Camp Benning, the base was moved to its permanent location, nine miles south, in June 1919. In 1922, the post was made permanent and was named Fort Benning. Created as the new location of The Infantry School of Arms, Fort Benning became the training post for many of the country's future leaders, as well as a major part of the military experience for hundreds of thousands of American soldiers. The post's current size, more than 180,000 acres, has long made it recognized as one of the largest infantry bases in the world. Named for Gen. Henry L. Benning of Columbus, the installation has had a major impact on the economic and social life of nearby Columbus. Images of America: Fort Benning features vintage photographs and postcards, mostly from 1918 to 1978, showcasing the first 60 years of the base's 85-year history. Included are scenes of the temporary encampment on Macon Road and the early wooden encampment on the Main Post. The permanent buildup from the late 1920s to the early 1940s is shown in photographs of The Infantry School, the Officers' Club, Main Post Chapel, Doughboy Stadium, Gowdy Field, the Jump Towers, Lawson Field, the Cuartel Barracks, and the officers' quarters, as well as Riverside, the Commandant's Home, formerly the Bussey Plantation. Activities and events include military reviews, visits of presidents, and the National Infantry Museum's dedication. Generals who served there and are featured include Bradley, Eisenhower, Marshall, and Patton. This centennial edition features a new foreword by Don Sando, deputy to the commanding general.

A wave of new Christian churches are emerging to reach unchurched and dechurched people who live in a culture that is increasingly non-religious and multi-religious. These new forms of church gather and network with people who typically have never been to church. The new faith communities listen to people and go where they are on the journey toward Jesus. They are deeply ecumenical but do not lose their distinctiveness because they learn fresh ways to communicate their identity through discipleship. Fresh Expressions began in the United Kingdom where it ignited over 3000 new faith communities. In the United States the movement is putting down roots in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Florida. Ken Carter and Audrey Warren offer this book as a group study for church leaders and congregations who are in the grip of Holy Spirit motivation to renew their tradition by reaching people who are dechurched or not yet in a discipleship relationship with Jesus. Each chapter includes two Bible study experiences for group conversation. "I have been an observer of and cheerleader for the Fresh Expressions movement ... from the beginning, and I've lamented how slow US congregations have been to welcome and adapt this movement for our setting. Now, as an admirer and ally of the United Methodist mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world, I am thrilled to see Fresh Expressions gaining this hearing in United Methodism in the United States. May thousands of congregations be inspired and equipped by Audrey Warren and Kenneth Carter's new book " - Brian D. McLaren, author of The Great Spiritual Migration "I was most fortunate to have Ken Carter and Audrey Warren as my guides as we explored Fresh Expressions of Church all across England. Now you are fortunate enough to have them lead you on a similar journey through the pages of this book. I hope you will be as excited as I was to find Church as I always dreamed it could be, moving outside the walls of sanctuaries and radically following the Holy Spirit's lead to new spaces and new people. This is the Church of Acts and the early Methodists. I hope it is also the Church of the twenty-first century. Enjoy your journey " --Sue Haupert-Johnson, Resident Bishop of the North Georgia Episcopal Area, The United Methodist Church "If you've felt God calling your church into a new kind of mission but you haven't been sure how to go about it -- this book is a great place to start. Get ready for a dose of hope." --Kenda Creasy Dean, Mary D. Synnott Professor of Youth, Church and Culture, Princeton Theological Seminary "This book is an essential group study for United Methodists who are serious about God's mission. Well researched, clearly written, and insightful, this volume includes carefully developed Bible studies and reflection questions for every chapter. --Elaine A. Heath, dean, Duke Divinity School "I owe my spiritual life to a group of pioneer missionaries who followed Jesus into my world. Fresh Expressions is a new way to do this." --Jorge Acevedo, lead pastor, Grace Church, a multi-site United Methodist congregation "Marvelous stuff Pray God this timely book, with its readable and inspirational content and Bible studies, finds its way into the hearts, minds, and decisions of every congregation in every conference " --Martyn Atkins, former General Secretary of the Methodist Church in Britain

When we think about love, there are so many different definitions of LOVE that people can easily become confused. Love has been so misdefined that many people are uncertain as to what love really looks like. We live in a generation of people who do not quite know how to receive love or give love. Yet, love is something we all need and desire. It is important that we not only get the proper definition of love, but we learn how to love others and build successful loving relationships. The book, Love and Verses, uses the scripture to help individuals and couples gain an understanding about the way in which God intended people to love each other and how love works. This book expounds upon key verses of scripture that show us when people love right and when people love wrong. We also explore verses from familiar R&B songs and various love songs that the reader can relate to. This book will make you think, laugh, and learn all about LOVE

In God Will Make a Way, Bishop Ken Carter shares reflections from his journey from the 2016 General Conference, through his leadership in The Way Forward, his role as Presiding Bishop, into the special 2019 Conference and culminating in the 2020 General Conference. The book is both a spiritual journey and an inside view of one of the most tumultuous periods of national and denominational history. Carter casts his personal spiritual reflections against a backdrop of life-shaping events - the first Way Forward meeting, the tragedy at Mother Emmanuel, interactions with Miroslav Volf and other theologians, the Pulse shootings, and more. Throughout, the high points are experiences and conversations between people, often from dramatically different stances, who find common ground, new understanding and hope while the dark times are from conflict inspired anger, national violence and shaken hope. The meaning and understanding of Carter's story requires the reader to share the context of the times both in the Church and the nation. Throughout the chapters, the design will include news stories, agendas, photos and other design elements to show the intertwining of the events.

Incarcerated Epistles: Soul Of Recidivism

Within three years of release, about two-thirds (67.8 percent) of released prisoners were rearrested. Within five years of release, about three-quarters (76.6 percent) of released prisoners were rearrested, according to national statistics. Incarcerated Epistles: Soul Of Recidivism is an introspective and candid look into just that statistic. Have you ever wondered what it was like in jail? Many ask what is the difference between jail and prison? Do you have a family member in prison? What do people really go through in there? Is it like the movies? Many questions, perceptions and misconceptions permeate our minds about the Prison Industrial Complex; but do we really stop and ask about what goes on inside the soul of a man behind bob wire fences and the proverbial "23/1". This book is a look into the psyche of the author as a newly processed inmate from interstate extradition from Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) to Virginia Department of Corrections (VDOC), and his mentality through the beginning stages of recidivism. A compilation of letters written from different jails/prisons have been compiled alongside edifying writings during a two year period(10 years total) of incarceration as a cautionary tale for youth to not indulge or act on criminal thinking, instant gratification, and other catalyst of destructive behavior; in juxtaposition to inspire other felons to not re-offend and succumb to the vicious cycle of recidivism. These writings serve to be a testament that will stand the test of time for the youth, civilian, felons, law enforcement, courts, judges, and legislation to all learn and make the necessary changes for the greater good of the existence of humanity.

'The publishers are to be congratulated for their exemplary production' - Curtis's Botanical Magazine'...this will go down as one of the greats of plant exploration literature...' - Roy Lancaster 'The appeal of the book lies as much in Ward's prose as in the thrilling story of exploration and discovery. He was a fine writer and it is a cause for celebration that one of his best books is now again available after a gap of 70 years' - Ursula Buchan, The Independent 'There's no doubt that such an elegant and exciting book new book richly deserves a new readership... the story behind its reissue is no less gripping than Kingdon Ward's own narrative'- Ambra Edwards, Gardening Which? Little explored and virtually inaccessible, the Tsangpo Gorge in south-east Tibet is the world's deepest gorge. Through it twists the Yarlong Tsangpo, Tibet's great river, emerging from below on the plains of India. This is the story of its exploration and the rich plant and animal life found there. Riddle of the Tsangpo Gorges, first published in 1926, is the fascinating account of plant-hunter and explorer Frank Kingdon Ward's most important expedition. Kenneth Cox, Kenneth Storm, Jr. and Ian Baker spent over ten years retracing the route of the 1924-25 expedition and managed to reach further into this magical and only partly explored land. The book contains the original Kingdon Ward text and extensive additional material, including a history of the exploration, geography and religious significance of the area and more than 250 colour photographs with detailed captions on the plants of the area, most of which are described by Kingdon Ward in the original text. There are first person accounts of expeditions to the area by Kenneth Cox and Kenneth Storm. Jr. and a photographic essay documents, for the first time in a book, the new Hidden Falls located in the portion of the gorge left unexplored by Frank Kingdon Ward and Lord Cawdor in 1924.

This book explores the importance of soil health in croplands, rangelands, pasturelands, and gardens, and presents new methods and technologies for assessing soil dynamics and health in these different land types. Through perspectives of agriculture, soil management, and ecological sustainability, the book provides accurate and up-to-date information on soil health assessment and maintenance that is often missing from current literature on conservation and environmental management and preservation. The book is written in a clear and concise format, and will appeal to non-scientists interested in soil health, as well as professional farmers, ranchers and gardeners. The book begins by discussing soil health from a historical perspective, and in terms of how it is covered in the news currently. Then the author addresses the ecological implications of soil health in farming, ranching and gardening, and comprehensively details the physical, chemical and biological properties of soil as they apply in various land types. The book then examines soil health assessment using new diagnostic and analytic technologies, and how these new innovations will be necessary going forward to maintain and improve soil health.

These historically grounded essays by Adolph Reed, Jr. and Kenneth W. Warren incorporate essential historical, contemporary, and literary perspectives on Black cultural criticism to explore the full portrait of racial injustice and inequality in America.Taking up such topics as the evolving politics of New Orleans before and after Hurricane Katrina and novels by Toni Morrison and Colson Whitehead, this book engages with the Black Radical Tradition, Afropessimism, antiblackness, race reductionism, and other key theories and concepts in contemporary Black studies. Challenging the prevailing assertion that longstanding white animus against nonwhite peoples sufficiently and adequately explains deepening injustice, past injustice or present inequality, the essays argue that such thinking fails to fully explain America’s past and leaves us ill-equipped to handle the continuing challenges in the present.Tracing black cultural criticism across the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, this book will appeal to students, scholars and researchers of Black studies, race and ethnic studies, and contemporary and black American literature.
