Changing Misconceptions About The Principal's Office
Today, many teachers arrive on their first day of school full of hope and eager to educate students. Encountering a scarcity of resources creates concern about whether they will be sufficiently equipped to achieve what is expected of them. Their concerns could be alleviated if expectations of them were supported with adequate professional resources. Inadequate preparation for managing classrooms inevitably leads to questions about who will be expected to bear the responsibility of assisting new teachers when issues arise. The first inclination is to look to the principal's office. Supporting the development of skills that will lead to self-reliance and lessen dependency on school administrators is the intention of many strategies represented in this book. Since classrooms also belong to students, they should be entrusted with taking on some responsibility for cultivating environments that make all students feel welcome.

Why are preservice teachers often told by veteran teachers to "forget what you learned" in teacher preparation programs? Why is there a gap between pedagogical practices employed at schools and those taught at colleges and universities? And why, after evidence from countless studies, are there still so few teachers of color working in our rapidly diversifying schools? These questions are addressed in this book, which describes a reconceptualized teacher preparation program based on a teacher residency model. This model is grounded in three core beliefs: first, that teacher quality is a shared responsibility between universities and school districts; second, that all students have a right to high-quality teachers who are as racially, ethnically, and linguistically diverse as the students they teach; and third, that for education to be transformative, future educators must have the right balance of theoretical knowledge and practical experiences grounded in specific contexts.Through a combination of rich description and qualitative and quantitative program data, the authors make the case that university programs focused on the communities they serve can ensure more effective, learner-ready teachers who remain in the profession longer. By providing a detailed blueprint for program development, the contents of this book will be of value and interest to educational leaders, policy makers, and researchers.

Inventions that Didn't Change the World is a fascinating visual tour through some of the most bizarre inventions registered with the British authorities in the nineteenth century. In an era when Britain was the workshop of the world, registration of designs was quicker and cheaper than the convoluted patenting process, and all manner of bizarre curiosities were painstakingly recorded in beautiful color illustrations and well-penned explanatory text, alongside the genuinely great inventions of the period. Irreverent commentary contextualizes each submission as well as taking a humorous view on how each has stood the test of time. This book introduces such gems as a ventilating top hat; an artificial leech; a design for an aerial machine adapted for the arctic regions; an anti-explosive alarm whistle; a tennis racket with ball-picker; and a currant-cleaning machine. Here is everything the end user could possibly require for a problem he never knew he had. Organized by area of application industry, clothing, transportation, medical, health and safety, the home, and leisure Inventions that Didn t Change the World reveals the concerns of a bygone era giddy with the possibilities of a newly industrialized world.
The Nature of Change - How the Natural World Coached Me Through Loss and Grief
This collection of writes from the author's grief journal reads as a series of short essays, comparing the grief process to the ever-changing face of nature - sometimes predictable but always evolving toward another day and another season. Through those days and seasons, this suicide survivor relates the changes she sees in nature to those in her own life and feelings. One entry, for example, describes not just the beginning and end of a snowstorm but how the flying snow changes through the storm's duration and, similarly, how her feelings of grief, guilt, and aloneness fly about, then seem to calm, then swirl up again. By journaling her observations and the metaphors they inspired of her own experience, she allows herself to relate to the power and inevitability of change - and make peace with not only her loss but also her survival.
