Das Bild, das Deutsche und Polen voneinander haben, wird massgeblich davon bestimmt, welches Bild deutsche und polnische Medien vom jeweiligen Nachbarland zeichnen. Ausgehend von dieser These gehen die Autoren der Frage nach, wie Deutschland bzw. Polen in den Printmedien des jeweiligen Nachbarlandes dargestellt werden. Sie untersuchen hierfur deutsche und polnische Presseartikel aus den Jahren 2000 bis 2019. Dabei nutzen die Verfasser den Ansatz der Frame-Analyse, um aufzuzeigen, welche Deutungsrahmen (Frames) aufgerufen werden, wenn es in der Presse um Deutschland, Polen und die deutsch-polnischen Beziehungen geht. Vor allem drei Erkenntnisse sind hier zentral. Erstens greifen mediale Darstellungen notwendigerweise immer auf Frames zuruck. Zweitens werden sowohl Deutschland als auch Polen in hochst unterschiedlichen Frames dargestellt, abhangig vom thematischen Kontext und dem Zeitpunkt der Veroffentlichung. Drittens wird deutlich, dass jeder Frame einer inneren Struktur folgt, die kommunikative Anschlussmoglichkeiten vorzeichnet. Unterschiedliche Deutungsrahmen sind somit nicht beliebig kombinierbar oder austauschbar. Fur die politische Kommunikation ergibt sich hieraus die Notwendigkeit, sich der (selbst) genutzten Frames bewusst zu werden und den Rahmen, der sich hieraus fur mogliche Anschlusskommunikationen ergibt, stets mitzudenken.
Why should one attempt to write anything more on Salman Rushdie, one of the most controversial writers of post-colonial and postmodern literatures in English? Is it possible to say anything new about an author whose works have been discussed very thoroughly? This study does so by revealing the "fairytaleness" of Rushdie's fiction: it shows how Western fairytales contribute to a map Rushdie has been charting in order to navigate across multiple religious, political, economic and cultural territories. This element of Rushdie's literary output has not been frequently discussed and it both completes the existing analyses and opens avenues for further research. The study involves diverse methodologies relevant both to the contemporary complexity of the fairytale and the multiple stratums of fairytaleness in Rushdie's work and consists of two carefully argued parts. Part one deals with the postmodern aspect of the fairytale-poetics of Rushdie's fiction. Part two focuses on the post-colonial themes expressed by Rushdie through fairytales. Such a synthesis of fairytale elements in Rushdie's works results in a systematic typology and alternative critical reflection on his oeuvre in counterpoint to purely post-colonial or postmodern readings. The monograph is completed with the thematically ordered and detailed bibliography.

Although usually discussed in terms of liberal humanism and affirmation of life, Bellow’s work allows for an interpretation displaying notes of negativity and pessimism, emphasizing Bellow’s proximity to the «postmodernist canon». The purpose of this study is to explore the possibility of such an alternative reading through the focus on the problem of the genre. Bellow’s novels are frequently referred to as Bildungsromane, but a related term – the Antibildungsroman – seems more appropriate to denote texts expressing the limitations of human intellectual vanity, the futility of human endeavours to transform reality according to individual wishes, and the recognition of the direness of human condition only partially redeemed by the intimations of the spiritual reality which can be accessed only through withdrawal.
This book analyzes art criticism on Abstract Expressionism, lauded as «the triumph of American painting.» It traces the ways in which the movement’s meaning has been construed and constructed in reference to the changing cultural and political framework. Starting from the purely formal analyses of the 1950s and early 1960s, through the radical political statements of the late 1960s and early 1970s, until the later interpretations inspired mainly by gender and postcolonial studies, this book cuts across the domains of politics, philosophy and art criticism. The question of whether Abstract Expressionism was a «path to the Absolute» or a «weapon of the Cold War» is inscribed into the larger debate concerning the links between culture and politics.

Angesichts der wachsenden europaischen Integration sind direkte Kontakte mit dem Fremden nahezu unvermeidbar. Welchen Einfluss und welche Bedeutung haben diese Kontakte fur seine Wahrnehmung? Inwieweit koennen sie Stereotypen vorbeugen, positive Einstellungen verstarken und Verstandnis sowie Aufgeschlossenheit fur Fremdes foerdern? Am Beispiel Deutschlands spurt die Autorin den stereotypen Projektionen in der deutsch-polnischen und deutsch-britischen Kommunikation nach und gibt Antworten auf die Frage nach dem Sinn und den Chancen von internationalen Begegnungen. In dieser quantitativ und qualitativ ausgerichteten Untersuchung zeichnet sie differenzierte, vielschichtige und widerspruchliche Deutschlandbilder nach, die aus zahlreichen deutsch-polnischen und deutsch-britischen Kontaktsituationen resultieren, und belegt die kritische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Kollektivgut sowie der eigenen Kultur vor dem Hintergrund der direkten Kontakte mit dem Fremden. Die Forschungsergebnisse liefern reichliche Indizien fur gegenseitige Verstandigung, Akzeptanz und Nahe bei Begegnungen zwischen Personen verschiedener Nationen trotz soziokultureller Unterschiede, zwischenstaatlicher Spannungen und historischer Altlasten.

Erinnerungstexte verfolgter Zeugen Jehovas werden analysiert und anhand eines umfassend argumentierten Vergleichs mit literarischen Texten zum Holocaust als Erinnerungsliteratur im kultur- und literaturwissenschaftlichen Forschungsfeld platziert. Fur die Entwicklung von Toleranz und Zivilcourage stellen sie sich als wichtig und didaktisch verwertbar heraus. So bezweckt die Verfasserin nicht nur, die Erinnerungstexte vor dem Vergessen zu bewahren, sondern legt zudem eine neue Basis fur weiterfuhrende historische und literaturwissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzungen.

Ziel der Arbeit ist eine konfrontative und pragmatische Analyse der Verwendung und der Funktion von Abtoenungspartikeln im Deutschen und Polnischen. Dazu werden die Abtoenungspartikeln hinsichtlich ihrer Pragmatik, Lexikologie und Lexikographie fur beide Sprachen referiert. Weiterhin wird auf die wesentlichen pragmatischen Funktionen der deutschen und der polnischen Abtoenungspartikeln naher eingegangen, wobei lexikologische Fragen zum Vorhandensein von Homonymen in anderen Wortklassen und Fragen zu der syntaktischen Distribution der Abtoenungspartikeln hinsichtlich der Satzarten eroertert werden. Die Materialbasis bilden verschriftete Rundfunksendungen sowie funktional entsprechende Belege aus im Internet zuganglichen Korpora. Ziel der Analyse ist es, die von deutschen und polnischen Abtoenungspartikeln getragenen Funktionen und funktionalen Schattierungen systematisch zu beschreiben.
Children have a specific perception of the Holocaust: it did not destroy their earlier world view, but became the field of first experiences. This book focuses on the traumatic dimension of the Holocaust and how it is expressed (or left unexpressed) in children’s diaries. «Here and Now» under the German Occupation presents an analysis of diaries and school elaborations written in Polish by Jewish children during German Occupation. A Literary Return to Childhood during the Holocaust is dedicated to Polish retrospective literature, in which authors return to the experience of the Holocaust during their childhood years.

Communication audit is a relatively new field of research, which has so far been investigated from a managerial point of view. Linguists have not yet researched it. This book summarises existing, mainly managerial, approaches to communication audits and brings to the forefront a linguistic perspective on them. It showcases that their essence is to capture and assess the actual communication behaviour of auditees. The proposed communication audit model, communication audit procedures, and linguistic form sheet can be applied and further developed by scientists interested in taking on research into communication and by practitioners who wish to conduct communication audits in practice.
The book centres around the topic of subjectivity and self-representation in contemporary Japanese literature and offers a new approach to the genre of shishosetsu (the I-novel). It reassesses the works of Dazai Osamu, Oe Kenzaburo, Endo Shusaku, Murakami Haruki, and of the translingual writers - Mizumura Minae, Hideo Levy, Tawada Yoko - to expose the wide-ranging treatment of personal experiences, and the intricate relations between the characters, the narrator, and the writing persona. In the context of world fiction and autobiography theories, the book investigates literary and linguistic challenges in expressing the “self.” The shishosetsu are explored as stories of constructing identities between cultures, languages, literary canons, and testimonies of untranslatability of the self.
The book is based on long-term ethnographic research in the Polish-Belarusian borderland. It examines the dynamics of symbolic boundaries between the Catholic and Orthodox believers in their everyday lives. By analyzing the space of local cemeteries, rituals, and attitudes related to death, eating practices, and food sharing, the author points to the changing sense of ethnic identity and the feeling of familiarity and otherness. Confessionally mixed neighborhoods and families enable different forms of religious bivalency and become a crucial factor in bridging and crossing ethnic boundaries. Socio-cultural norms and social relations shape the ethnic identity of the borderland’s residents more than the institutional frames of both churches.

The book explores the hitherto rarely discussed connection of magic with politics in the writings of Tacitus, Suetonius and Ammianus Marcellinus, offering insight into the way language of magic and ritual pollution is used as means of characterization and historiosophical commentary on the nature of power and political struggle. Religious deviation and innovation, theurgy, necromancy, black and erotic magic, the topoi of an emperor-magician, a semi-divine emperor-healer/saviour and a witch/poisoner, all play an important role in the analyzed texts. Magic is depicted as a way of abusing the official state religion; every such abuse disturbs pax deorum and brings misery on both the perpetrator and the whole state.
