Single-Facility Location Problems with Barriers

Single-Facility Location Problems with Barriers

Kathrin Klamroth

Springer-Verlag New York Inc.

sidottu
Everyday life bears a multitude of location problems and locational de- sions. These may be as simple as how best to place a pencil on a desk without having to reach too far and still keeping the work space clear, up to the question of where to place the next out of hundreds of thousands of transistors on a microchip. Some of these questions have easy answers, while others are so complex that not even satisfactory solutions are ava- able, never mind asking for optimized placement. The scales of problems reach from microchip design up to global trade and may demand consid- ation of one, two, three, or even more dimensions. As modern life encounters an ever increasing concentration in many - spects, usually a multitude of restrictions will be imposed on a problem. Theserestrictionsmaybeclassi?edasregionsoflimitedorforbiddenpla- ment of a new facility or as regions with limitations on traveling. Areas where the placement of a new facility is forbidden, referred to as forbidden regions, canbeusedtomodel, forexample, protectedareasorregionswhere thegeographiccharacteristicsforbidtheconstructionofthedesiredfacility. Limitations on traveling are constituted by barrier regions or obstacles like military regions, mountainranges, lakes, big rivers, interstatehighways,or, on smaller scales, machinery and conveyor belts in an industrial plant.
Anatomy & Physiology for Psychotherapists

Anatomy & Physiology for Psychotherapists

Kathrin A. Stauffer

WW Norton Co
2010
nidottu
Kathrin Stauffer—a biochemist and seasoned body psychotherapist—takes a look at organ systems of the human body to illuminate the connections between body and mind, exploring the body as both the ground of our physical experience and as a metaphor for our emotional life. Beginning with a discussion of the basic building blocks of the body, cells and molecules, Stauffer works through the body system by system, showing through clinical case examples that an understanding of each system can greatly enhance the art of psychotherapy: The Central Nervous System, The Skeletal Musculature, The Respiratory System, The Skin, The Digestive System, Fluids and Connective Tissue, The Endocrine System, The Reproductive System, and The Respiratory System. Throughout, Stauffer presents human anatomy and physiology in clear, simple terms, with facts selected for interest and relevance to psychotherapists. Many links are made between physical and psychological function to give readers a taste of how body psychotherapists work in clinical practice to integrate body and mind, and thus help their clients become more whole. Anatomy & Physiology for Psychotherapists invites psychotherapists, complementary therapists, and anyone else interested in the mind/body connection to engage with the physical body to bring more depth into their therapeutic work.

People who have experienced emotional neglect in the first months and years of life suffer negative consequences into adulthood. As adult psychotherapy clients, they require long-term work and delicate emotional attunement as well as a profound understanding of the experiences that have shaped their inner worlds. This book provides therapists with an in-depth view of the subjective experience of such “ignored children” and a range of possible theoretical models to help understand key features of their psychological functioning. Kathrin A. Stauffer presents dos and don’ts of psychotherapy with such clients. She draws on broad clinical experience to help psychotherapeutic professionals deepen their understanding of “ignored children” and outlines available neurobiological and psychological data to assist therapists in designing effective therapeutic interventions.

The Politics of Sexual Harassment

The Politics of Sexual Harassment

Sexual harassment, in particular in the workplace, is a controversial topic which often makes headline news. What accounts for the cross-national variation in laws, employer policies, and implementation of policies dealing with sexual harassment in the workplace? Why was the United States on the forefront of policy and legal solutions, and how did this affect politicization of sexual harassment in the European Union and its member states? Exploring the way sexual harassment has become a global issue, Kathrin Zippel draws on theories of comparative feminist policy, gender and welfare state regimes, and social movements to explore the distinct paths that the United States, the European Union and its member states, specifically Germany, have embarked on to address the issue. This comparison provides invaluable insights on the role of transnational movements in combatting sexual harassment, and on future efforts to implement the European Union Directive of 2002.

Use Your Useless Degree: How to Use Your Humanities Degree in a Career as a Freelance Editor and Writer
"Humanities degree? What are you going to do with THAT? "Sound Familiar? If I had a dollar for everytime I heard that question when I was graduating college...well I would have answered, "Thanks. Now that I'm a millionaire, I'll be doing nothing with my degree." That question has a clear undertone: "Your degree is Useless." Unfortunately, subtly judging questions don't make us any money. When I was graduating with a BA in Religion from my small liberal arts college in small-town Iowa, I felt like I had only two options: go to law school or become a pastor. I chose neither...and decided to wing this thing we call life. I'm so glad I did.If you're a humanities grad with an affinity for wordsmithing and grammar, all you need to become a successful freelance editor and writer is a little business/publishing world know-how. Lucky you, I made all the mistakes and figured out what actually works. In this book, you'll learn exactly what I did to succeed as a freelancer. Ready to Use that "Useless" Degree?
Recycling Infrastructures in Cambodia

Recycling Infrastructures in Cambodia

This book examines the recycling infrastructure in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It considers the circular flows of waste and practices through ‘infracycles’, maintenance practices that tinker with the social and capitalist order, and postcolonial ways of doing politics that co-constitute predominant waste fantasies from which naturecultures ooze out, shaping urban life in their own way.In this context, socially marginalized waste pickers contest the capitalist system by creating tropes about freedom, labor autonomy, and the will to survive. In this regard, they are also meddling about a new social order that represents the fine line Cambodia is sashaying between tradition and modernity. Waste fantasies that are a result of environmental problematizations, however, perpetuate postcolonial ways of doing politics by exuding notions of waste as detached from its sociocultural context. But ultimately, waste slips through the cracks of these dominant imaginaries and global waste reduction models enacting new versions of what waste and the city is, providing opportunities for another future waste policy. This book is a unique contribution to the field of infrastructure studies emphasizing the importance of perceiving infrastructure as circular in smaller ‘infracycles’, rather than linear. It will be of interest to researchers in the field of environmental anthropology, science and technology studies, urban studies, and Southeast Asian studies. The Introduction of this book is available for free in PDF format as Open Access from the individual product page at www.routledge.com.
