Addressing participatory, transdisciplinary approaches to local stewardship of the environment, Grassroots to Global features scholars and stewards exploring the broad impacts of civic engagement with the environment. Chapters focus on questions that include: How might faith-based institutions in Chicago expand the work of church-community gardens? How do volunteer "nature cleaners" in Tehran attempt to change Iranian social norms? How does an international community in Baltimore engage local people in nature restoration while fostering social equity? How does a child in an impoverished coal mining region become a local and national leader in abandoned mine restoration? And can a loose coalition that transforms blighted areas in Indian cities into pocket parks become a social movement? From the findings of the authors' diverse case studies, editor Marianne Krasny provides a way to help readers understand the greater implications of civic ecology practices through the lens of multiple disciplines. Contributors: Aniruddha Abhyankar, Martha Chaves, Louise Chawla, Dennis Chestnut, Nancy Chikaraishi, Zahra Golshani, Lance Gunderson, Keith E. Hedges, Robert E. Governments everywhere confront major challenges to their health care programs, but federal countries must respond through systems of multi-level governance. In Health Policy and Federalism the contributors analyse the resulting complexities in decision-making in five federations: Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, and the United States. They highlight the impact of federal institutions and processes on key dimensions of health policy, including the balance between the public and private sectors, overall levels of health spending, the access of citizens to services, and the capacity of policy-makers to manage their systems effectively. Contributors include Keith Banting, Johan de Cock (tThe National Sickness and Invalidity Insurance Institute, Belgium), David C. Colby (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation), Stan Corbett, Linda Hancock (Deakin University, Australia), Antonia Maioni (McGill University), and Dietman Wassener (Universität Augsburg).

The European Baptist Federation

A criticism often leveled at Baptists is that they have no theology of ecclesial reality beyond the local. In this book Keith Jones describes the history and current reality of the European Baptist Federation (EBF), which brings together over fifty national Baptist groups in Europe and the Middle East and seeks to demonstrate that there is an ecclesial reality within the organization, expressed in its communal life, mission activity, working on theological education, in relationship to other Christian world communions and in its decision making processes. The role of the pivotal figure of the General Secretary of the EBF is examined with particular reference to two significant figures. The relationship of European Baptists during the cold war era is explored, as is the relationship to two key mission agencies from the USA who have done much work in Europe. This represents ground-breaking work in terms of an examination of how Baptists in Europe work together trans-nationally.

Even with the rise of newer neuropsychiatric brain stimulation methods, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) remains a widely used treatment for severe mental illness -- and perhaps the most effective for serious mental illness. Optimal treatment requires that psychiatrists be skilled in diagnosis and familiar with the techniques of treatment. That's where Principles and Practice of Electroconvulsive Therapy comes in. With its up-to-date, comprehensive coverage of all aspects of ECT, this is an unrivaled resource for psychiatrists, whether in practice or still in training, striving for maximum treatment efficacy. The book begins with an overview of what ECT is and how it is carried out, followed by a brief history of the therapy, from its earliest applications to its use in modern times. The guide follows the typical course of treatment, discussing the following: ? Understanding the indications for ECT and selecting patients who might benefit from this therapy -- whether they suffer from depression, mania, schizophrenia, or catatonia? Educating patients and their families on ECT and obtaining patient consent? Conducting a pretreatment medical evaluation and understanding the role of anesthesia? Managing an individual ECT treatment, including choosing the electrical stimulus dose and parameter combination, delivering the electrical stimulus, assisting with recovery problems, etc.? Overseeing the course of treatments, particularly for practitioners not personally conducting the treatments? Managing patients after a course of treatments and preventing relapse? Assessing and managing the memory side effects of ECT The final chapter examines other neuropsychiatric stimulation therapies in relation to ECT and explains how to choose among them. All chapters conclude with easily referenced key points that summarize the most salient ideas. Readers seeking to further educate themselves on ECT will also benefit from the exhaustive reference list.Though particularly useful for psychiatrists and psychiatric residents, Principles and Practice of Electroconvulsive Therapy, with its straightforward style, is a ready resource for any mental health or medical professionals interested in ECT.

Few substances are as enigmatic as ketamine. Is it an effective anesthetic? A useful tool for the psychiatrist? A doorway to transcendence and spiritual awakening? A dangerously addictive drug? The opinions are as plentiful as the individuals who encounter it. As its use in the psychiatric setting expands, however, it's important for clinicians and patients alike to move past preconceived notions and misconceptions and truly understand ketamine: its history, its uses, its effects, and what the future might hold. They'll find no better resource than Ketamine: The Story of Modern Psychiatry's Most Fascinating Molecule. Meticulously researched, engagingly written, and comprehensive in scope, this book traces ketamine's history, examining: Its origins as an alternative to PCP as an analgesic and anesthetic. The consequences of its widespread use as a recreational drug. Its complex pharmacology. Its role in understanding and treating schizophrenia. Its use to manage chronic pain, depression, anxiety disorders, and other conditions . Each chapter beings with key points that frame the discussion and synthesize the information that follows. The guide concludes with hundreds of references that invite the reader to further study. Far from simply a dry chronology of ketamine, this book is a well-rounded exploration of a substance of tremendous consequence to psychiatry and neurology alike.

In the year 2050, the man known as Zinn is on the run from the consequences of his greatest creation: an artificial genome that wildly increases the human lifespan. His 'Methuselah gene' has gone viral, and he's being hunted by Adele, a semi-retired CIA biowarfare specialist who hopes to find a way to reverse the genome's effects before it's too late. As the longevity plague spreads, populations explode, economies are upended, and intergenerational resentments boil over. Adele searches for a cure while her former lover, Dan Altman, and his wife, Marion, wealthy political operatives both, become leaders of a movement of hundred-plus-year-old 'lifers' and fight to create a sanctuary for the ultra-aged in the wilds of Colorado. Meanwhile, the Altmans' son, Nolan, thinks he has the answer to the longevity crisis: a suicide pill that kills after one year, a death wish algorithm that will influence the super-aged to take it, and his beautiful daughter, Claire, who is a spokesperson for the growing anti-lifer backlash and the head of the federal government's new Department for Longevity Management. Combining a hugely topical premise with a vein of social-political satire, Lifers evokes a world where society's ingrained ageism turns lethal and the fear of death is replaced by the challenge of living on ... and on.

Happiness is not the goal... successful living in the eyes of The Most High God is everything. This book will show you how to find true happiness through Set-Apart Distinguished Decision-Making... based on three pillars, 1) common sense, 2) DATA, and 3) the eternal words of The Most High God.... set apart distinguished decision-making to success & happinessFrom the inception of life, you were taught to pursue your own happiness, live your own passions, do what makes you happy, follow the dreams of your own happy hearts, and to look out for #1, unapologetically so, because you only live once (YOLO)... yet even with this great emphasis on happiness, we live in a dark, degrading world, littered with sad, miserable, unfulfilled happiness chasers... ask yourself, in this world, how much control does one really have over their own happiness & destiny?Everyone wants to be happy, and live life on their own terms... yet the happiness we seek often bears no resemblance to the happiness we attain. We have a world full of fun-loving, feel-good, happiness-seekers... still unhappy, agonized, perplexed, grasping at air.But what if I told you the singular pursuit of happiness is unwise, misguided, even reckless toward successful, satisfying, significant living? What if I told you that happiness is accomplished, not in pursuing & concerning yourself in what feels good, but in your decisions, priorities, actions, sustained through your continuous personal growth? This book will explain, what I know to be absolutely true of overcoming the machinations of this world... leading to the enduring unbridled happiness you seek. This is Set-Apart Distinguished Decision Making. In every walk of life, when decisions are affirmed through these three pillars, with prayer, life takes on new meaning, relationships become more fulfilling, careers prove more productive, parenting more effective, a childhood more promising, and our walk with The Most High God more fruitful, satisfying, joyous, and peaceful. Life lessons & decisions for men, women, parents, and teens ...When all three pillars come together, align, and agree, they form vigorous structures of confirmation, to guide & uphold life's most difficult & troubling decisions... when common sense speaks it, when research data proves it, when The Most High GOD commands it... then, with prayer, our decisions are sealed - all that's left, is for us to exhibit the courage & audacity, to simply do what needs to be done - Happiness Be Damned
Be A Bean!: Life Lessons for Anyone and Everyone Who Wants to Lead a Good Life, Be a Better Leader, and Change the World
Life is complicated. Leading complicates life further. Be A Bean provides 20 little lessons on life and leadership that offer a blueprint to having a positive impact, making a difference, and achieving excellence. How does one change the world? Progress, new markets, revolutions... all the product of transformational change. Managers do not seize opportunities, create new futures, and alter the landscape. Leaders do... Specifically, leaders who dare to dream big, act bold, risk failure, inspire others, and challenge the status quo. These people are the beans that refuse to be changed, but rather work to change the environment in which they exist. Be A Bean is not a book for those individuals who are satisfied with the status quo, seek to maintain their niche in the current market, or those who are willing to timidly follow others into safe waters. This is a text for those people who wish to blaze their own path, boldly go into uncharted waters, create new markets, generate innovative approaches to old problems, and foster a landscape of constant improvement in efforts to leave the world better than the one they inherited.

The poems in this book reflect the author's preference for traditional rhyme-and-meter verse forms, particularly the sonnet and the villanelle. The major sonnet subcategories -- Shakespearean, Spenserian, Petrarchan, Terza Rima -- are explored, plus a few alternate "Balserian sonnet" rhyme schemes the author has devised. Expressive variety within the villanelle's exacting structure is also explored. The author hopes that poetry devotees will find this book enjoyable, and that students/practitioners of traditional verse forms will find it helpful and encouraging.
