The Making of Détente

Originally published in 1995. In the early 1970s, largely as a result of the debilitating struggle in Vietnam, the United States began to reassess and redefine its basic approach to East-West relations. At the same time, the Soviet Union was awakening to the liabilities that a continuing and unregulated state of hostility would impose on its own internal and external agenda. Keith Nelson details the circumstances and traces the steps that led to the first significant accommodation and easing of tension between the superpowers during the Cold War. "In this important study, Keith Nelson explains the detente period in an imaginative, convincing, and impressively scholarly manner. Although there have been scores of books and memoirs on the subject, none have done the job quite like Nelson's. In particular, he has used post-glasnost Russian memoirs and monographs—and, especially, his own interviews with such key players as Dobrynin and Arbatov—to present one of the most intelligent Kremlinological studies I have ever seen." —Melvin Small, Wayne State University

This book describes the failure of the once powerful U.S. newspaper industry to adapt in the online era. From a historical perspective the book examines the issues and forces that shaped the industry, during the formative years of the online era through to today’s wireless-based marketplace, taking into account how consumers embraced interactivity and the ensuing emergence of user-generated content. Numerous examples critically detail how newspaper companies viewed online media forms, how they deployed them, and for what purpose. The Decline of the Daily Newspaper provides insight into how the decisions made in the early years of the online era have influenced the industry’s current economic condition.

Student design engineers often require a "cookbook" approach to solving certain problems in mechanical engineering. With this focus on providing simplified information that is easy to retrieve, retired mechanical design engineer Keith L. Richards has written Design Engineer’s Handbook. This book conveys the author’s insights from his decades of experience in fields ranging from machine tools to aerospace. Sharing the vast knowledge and experience that has served him well in his own career, this book is specifically aimed at the student design engineer who has left full- or part-time academic studies and requires a handy reference handbook to use in practice. Full of material often left out of many academic references, this book includes important in-depth coverage of key topics, such as: Effects of fatigue and fracture in catastrophic failures Lugs and shear pins Helical compression springs Thick-walled or compound cylinders Cam and follower design Beams and torsion Limits and fits and gear systems Use of Mohr’s circle in both analytical and experimental stress analysis This guide has been written not to replace established primary reference books but to provide a secondary handbook that gives student designers additional guidance. Helping readers determine the most efficiently designed and cost-effective solutions to a variety of engineering problems, this book offers a wealth of tables, graphs, and detailed design examples that will benefit new mechanical engineers from all walks.

A hundred years ago in civilised Britain a man could sell his wife at the local market for 5/-. In the last hundred years machines have taken over many of the manual tasks once performed physically by men. Indeed many women now undertake the jobs once preserved for men only. In schooling, girls frequently perform better than boys. In relationships, it can often be the woman who runs the family accounts and provides the income. This book, in fictional terms, explores the world where women have gone beyond equal rights and evolved into the dominant gender, leaving men behind mentally and socially. The man in the story, David, largely enjoys being married to a senior executive with his only function in life to please his wife. He is a man and therefore has no real use in society other than to please women. One day his life is changed and he is forced into a world for which he is totally unprepared. How he deals with it and the effect it has on him is probably why this is only a work of fiction and although a hundred years ago one gender was totally dominant it is unlikely this will ever happen again. The book will in parts shock you, it may make you laugh but certainly it will make you think

Design Engineer's Reference Guide

Keith L. Richards

Author Keith L. Richards believes that design engineers spend only a small fraction of time actually designing and drawing, and the remainder of their time finding relevant design information for a specific method or problem. He draws on his own experience as a mechanical engineering designer to offer assistance to other practicing and student engineers facing the same struggle. Design Engineer's Reference Guide: Mathematics, Mechanics, and Thermodynamics provides engineers with a roadmap for navigating through common situations or dilemmas. This book starts off by introducing reference information on the coverage of differential and integral calculus, Laplace’s transforms, determinants, and matrices. It provides a numerical analysis on numerical methods of integration, Newton–Raphson’s methods, the Jacobi iterative method, and the Gauss–Seidel method. It also contains reference information, as well as examples and illustrations that reinforce the topics of most chapter subjects.A companion to the Design Engineer's Handbook and Design Engineer's Case Studies and Examples, this textbook covers a range of basic engineering concepts and common applications including:• Mathematics• Numerical analysis• Statics and kinematics• Mechanical vibrations• Control system modeling• Basic thermodynamics• Fluid mechanics and linkagesAn entry-level text for students needing to understand the underlying principles before progressing to a more advanced level, Design Engineer's Reference Guide: Mathematics, Mechanics, and Thermodynamics is also a basic reference for mechanical, manufacturing, and design engineers.

Between 1944 and 1949 the United States Navy held a war crimes tribunal that tried Japanese nationals and members of Guam's indigenous Chamorro population who had worked for Japan's military government. In Sacred Men Keith L. Camacho traces the tribunal's legacy and its role in shaping contemporary domestic and international laws regarding combatants, jurisdiction, and property. Drawing on Giorgio Agamben's notions of bare life and Chamorro concepts of retribution, Camacho demonstrates how the U.S. tribunal used and justified the imprisonment, torture, murder, and exiling of accused Japanese and Chamorro war criminals in order to institute a new American political order. This U.S. disciplinary logic in Guam, Camacho argues, continues to directly inform the ideology used to justify the Guantánamo Bay detention center, the torture and enhanced interrogation of enemy combatants, and the American carceral state.
