Undeclared War and the Future of U.S. Foreign Policy

Undeclared War and the Future of U.S. Foreign Policy

Kenneth B. Moss

Johns Hopkins University Press
2008

Undeclared wars have a history in the United States almost as old as the country itself and bear an importance that has grown along with the nation's power, international status, and technological proficiency. Kenneth B. Moss's highly original argument in Undeclared War and the Future of U.S. Foreign Policy demonstrates that though the framers of the Constitution had a broad notion of the varieties of war and the authority under which they would be undertaken without a formal declaration, Congress and the President are leading the United States into conflicts without fundamental oversight and accountability. The concentration of power in the president's hands is particularly troubling to Moss, and he traces the shift to congressional deference and even timidity. Presidential accountability to Congress and the public for limited wars has been harmfully weak, most recently in the wars against Vietnam and Iraq, says the author, and he proposes a new strategy for improving congressional institutions for oversight.

Children’s literature has spent decades on the psychiatrist’s couch, submitting to psychoanalysis by scores of scholars and popular writers alike. Freud in Oz turns the tables, suggesting that psychoanalysts owe a significant and largely unacknowledged debt to books ostensibly written for children. In fact, Kenneth B. Kidd argues, children’s literature and psychoanalysis have influenced and interacted with each other since Freud published his first case studies. In Freud in Oz, Kidd shows how psychoanalysis developed in part through its engagement with children’s literature, which it used to articulate and dramatize its themes and methods, turning first to folklore and fairy tales, then to materials from psychoanalysis of children, and thence to children’s literary texts, especially such classic fantasies as Peter Pan and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. He traces how children’s literature, and critical response to it, aided the popularization of psychoanalytic theory. With increasing acceptance of psychoanalysis came two new genres of children’s literature-known today as picture books and young adult novels-that were frequently fashioned as psychological in their forms and functions.Freud in Oz offers a history of reigning theories in the study of children’s literature and psychoanalysis, providing fresh insights on a diversity of topics, including the view that Maurice Sendak and Bruno Bettelheim can be thought of as rivals, that Sendak’s makeover of monstrosity helped lead to the likes of the Muppets, and that “Poohology” is its own kind of literary criticism-serving up Winnie the Pooh as the poster bear for theorists of widely varying stripes.

Theory for Beginners

Theory for Beginners

FORDHAM UNIVERSITY PRESS

Since its inception in the 1970s, the Philosophy for Children movement (P4C) has affirmed children's literature as important philosophical work. Theory, meanwhile, has invested in children's classics, especially Lewis Carroll's Alice books, and has also developed a literature for beginners that resembles children's literature in significant ways. Offering a novel take on this phenomenon, Theory for Beginners explores how philosophy and theory draw on children's literature and have even come to resemble it in their strategies for cultivating the child and/or the beginner. Examining everything from the rise of French Theory in the United States to the crucial pedagogies offered in children's picture books, from Alison Bechdel's graphic memoir Are You My Mother? and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events to studies of queer childhood, Kenneth B. Kidd deftly reveals the way in which children may learn from philosophy and vice versa.

*****5 Star seal awarded by ReadersFavorite.com ***** It starts with the violent murders of three white upstanding professionals; three crimes stark in their symbolism. The first victim is hung from a tree, iron shackles around his neck and wrists. The second is burned alive in a white hood and robe. The third, staked through with a wooden cross. Someone is sending a message, one that calls back to a dirty time in our nation's history, but what does it all mean? Rick Killing has no idea. He's a man of failed promise who let his life slip off track and now only wants to get his own house in order. But as the murders continue, he finds that the focus is on him. Why? Is he the next target, or the next reason? To answer those high-stakes questions, to reclaim the life he wants, Rick will have to go straight through men with plans for a new, mad world order; men who kill for cold purpose. It ends with a challenge to everything Rick has ever held close and a threat to the lives of those nearest to him. Fans of DeMille characters or TV's Castle will enjoy Rick Killing and his nature. REVIEWS: "Killing the Man ... is a thrilling story woven with wit and humor that makes it a fun and exciting read. Kenneth B. Humphrey's writing style is lucid and relaxed, which makes the book extremely believable and the characters easy to relate to. I also enjoyed the character of the central protagonist, Rick Killing, tremendously as he handles situations with a unique mix of charm, wit, and strength. Overall, this is a good book that makes for great armchair reading. I would recommend it to anyone looking for an action-filled book packed with some fun and humor along the way." - ReadersFavorite.com, March 2015

Hiroshima and the Historians

Cambridge University Press

The decision to use atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki has been considered the most important – and perhaps most controversial - event in twentieth-century history. It ushered in many of the major developments of our time: the end of World War II, the beginning of the atomic age, the establishment of the American world order, and the start of the Cold War arms race. Kenneth B. Pyle illuminates both the complexities of the event itself and the debates among historians that continue today, as they wrestle with the moral issues of the decision, its necessity and its alternatives. While producing no final resolution to the controversy, historians have nevertheless advanced and deepened our understanding of this event. This accessible and thought-provoking analysis is a case study in the intricate nature of the historian's craft and a reminder of the value of historians in a free society.
