Kent Urban Legends

Kent Urban Legends

Neil Arnold

The History Press Ltd
2013
nidottu
Do motorists pick up a phantom hitchhiker on Blue Bell Hill during stormy nights? Does Satan appear if you dance round the Devil's Bush in the village of Pluckley? Do big cats roam the local woods? And what happens if you manage to count the 'Countless Stones' near Aylesford? For centuries strange urban legends have materialised in the Garden of England. Now, for the first time, folklorist and monster-hunter Neil Arnold looks at these intriguing tales, strips back the layers, and reveals if there is more to these Chinese whispers than meets the eye. Folklore embeds itself into a local community, often to the extent that some people believe all manner of mysteries and take them as fact. Whether they’re stories passed around the school playground, through the internet, or round a flickering campfire, urban legends are everywhere. Kent Urban Legends is a quirky and downright spooky ride into the heart of Kent folklore.

Nearly 200 fine-art images in this large coffee table book capture four seasons of coastal activity on Kent Island—the largest island in the Chesapeake Bay. Idyllically situated on Maryland's Eastern Shore, Kent Island maintains a quiet timelessness despite its proximity to the Washington-Baltimore metro area. It brims with outdoor activity, from working boats to birdlife, charter boats, tankers, and paddling dogs. This book's lush photographic spreads capture this watery environment year-round—from winter's empty crab pots and icy shores, to spring and fall's wildlife migrations, to summer's storms and sunsets. It's the most comprehensive photographic essay of Kent Island's natural heritage to date, and one of very few professional coffee-table books to spotlight this location. Highlights of this book include: • Points of interest: Romancoke Pier, Waterman's Boat Basin, Kent Point Marina, Sandy Point Shoal Lighthouse, Kentmorr Marina, Queen Anne Marina, Terrapin Park, Chesapeake Bay Beach Club, Harris Crab House & Seafood Restaurant, Shipping Creek Landing, Bloody Point Bar Lighthouse, Dock House Restaurant, Ferry Point Park, Libbey’s Coastal Kitchen & Cocktails, and Bay Bridge Marina • Includes a foreword by Jack Broderick, the president of Kent Island Heritage Society • A popular vacation and destination wedding spot, Kent Island attracts visitors from the DC/Baltimore/Annapolis metro area, as well as Pennsylvania, New York, and Ohio • The seafood and beaches of the Chesapeake Bay's Eastern Shore are legendary Local resident and fine-art photographer Dale Hall's nautical imagery is an irresistible invitation to explore the flurry of life along Maryland's storied Eastern Shore.
Kent State - May Four

Kent State - May Four

The reverberations of the rifle shots that killed four students on May 4, 1970 echoed across the nation and beyond. Nowhere, perhaps, did they echo with more persistence and poignancy than at the place where it happened, the Kent State University campus. For more than ten years the university's name has been a symbol of the Sixties protest movements as the causes of the event were debated, lawsuits embroiled participants and victims, and concerned people struggled for appropriate means for remembrance and commemoration—each issue leading to further, if less violent, arguments, demonstrations and confrontations. The May 4 episode has been recounted many times, in many ways. The events of the succeeding years, particularly as they affected the community in which they happened, are less well documented. As event and as symbol, Kent State/May 4 means many things to many people. This unique collection of essays and personal interviews presents a broad spectrum of these viewpoints in recounting the events of May 4 and those of the aftermath years. The result is a composite history from the perspectives of many of those who lived it, a reflection of the differing ideological stances and life experiences characteristic of that tumultuous era in American history.

The Kent and East Sussex Railway (Heritage Guide) is the second book in a new series of guidebooks with a unique twist. Created by railway and industrial historian Dr Richard Marks, this guide introduces a fresh approach and style to travel literature. It serves as an introduction to both the heritage railway and the history of the region. There is so much more to Britain’s heritage railways than just the trains, once a key part of British industry and society they bring to life a lost past. Telling the story of the origins of the railway, as part of the Colonel Stephens group of light railways, the new guide explains why a light railway was an important development in Britain’s transport networks. It also extends beyond the railway, highlighting captivating destinations and activities nearby in Kent and East Sussex. It promises something for every reader, ensuring days out that are both enjoyable and inspiring. The book offers numerous reasons for tourists to extend their stay beyond a train ride or a single day trip. It paints a vivid picture of local life in the surrounding countryside and towns in the past. Encompassing local towns, museums, castles, and wildlife alongside the railway, the guide provides a variety of enjoyable suggestions for visitors, to match all interests. The book points out additional resources for finding more local attractions, making it a friendly and indispensable companion for any trip to the railway and beyond.
