Slan Hunter

The sequel to A. E. van Vogt's "Slan," one of the most famous SF novels of the twentieth century This startling SF adventure novel is a collaboration between the classic SF Grand Master, A. E. van Vogt, and contemporary master Kevin J. Anderson. At the time of his death in 2000, van Vogt left a partial draft and an outline for the sequel to his most famous novel, "Slan." Van Vogt's jam-packed, one-damn-thingafter-another storytelling technique makes his active plots compulsively readable. Now the story has been completed by Anderson, and is sure to be one of the most popular SF novels of the year.Slans are a race of superior mutants in the far future, smarter and stronger than Homo sapiens and able to read minds. Yet they are a persecuted minority, survivors of terrible genocidal wars, who live in hiding from the mass of humanity. "Slan Hunter" tells of this towering conflict in the far future, when a new war among the races of mankind bursts out, and humanity all types of humanity struggles to survive. The heroic Jommy Cross of Slan is once again called upon to save the human race."

Although research on business model innovation is flourishing internationally, many important questions on the 'how', 'what', and 'when' of this process remain largely unanswered, particularly in regard to the role of top management. This book answers some of those pressing questions by taking a deliberately managerial perspective. Based on new and original findings derived from a survey among firms from various industries, and several case studies (including DSM, NXP Semiconductors, Randstad, and TomTom), the authors provide new insights into how and when managers can change a firm's business model. They turn their attention particularly to one key question: is it better to replicate existing models or develop new ones? Business model renewal is regarded as being especially vital in highly competitive environments. Nonetheless, whatever the environment, high levels of both replication and renewal will be key for a firm to succeed. The book looks at four levers that can be used by managers to innovate their business model: management itself, organizational structure, technology, and co-creation with external parties. It discusses the individual effects of these levers on business model replication and renewal. It also analyses specific combinations that strengthen business model innovation, including those which are technology oriented, internally oriented, externally oriented, and those which combine all of the levers in an integrated way.

In this work, the unique power measurement capabilities of the Cray XT architecture were exploited to gain an understanding of power and energy use, and the effects of tuning both CPU and network bandwidth. Modifications were made to deterministically halt cores when idle. Additionally, capabilities were added to alter operating P-state. At the application level, an understanding of the power requirements of a range of important DOE/NNSA production scientific computing applications running at large scale is gained by simultaneously collecting current and voltage measurements on the hosting nodes. The effects of both CPU and network bandwidth tuning are examined, and energy savings opportunities without impact on run-time performance are demonstrated. This research suggests that next-generation large-scale platforms should not only approach CPU frequency scaling differently, but could also benefit from the capability to tune other platform components to achieve more energy-efficient performance.

Critically assessing growth-based models of innovation policy, this enlightening study sparks new debate on the role and nature of responsible innovation. Drawing on insights from economics, politics, and science and technology studies, it proposes the concept of 'responsible stagnation' as an expansion of present discussions about growth, degrowth, responsibility and innovation within planetary limitations. This important intervention explores real-world relationships between the political economy, innovation policy and concepts of responsibility, and will be an invaluable resource for individuals and civil society organizations who seek to promote responsible innovation.
