An uncoordinated high school senior is asked by the coach of a two-time championship high school basketball program to join the team in mid season bumping the most popular player on the team in favor of him. Instead of being admired by his classmates and team members he is shunned, abused and kidnapped by thugs before the team can make it to the playoffs. The secret is why he is on the team and he is telling nobody even if it kills him. Clarence is sustained by his solid Christian beliefs but must choose between his not-so-pretty girlfriend and the most beautiful redhead he has ever seen. Temptation or following Christ is his dilemma and staying on a team that neither wants or apparently needs him.This is more than a story about basketball, but centers on a young seventeen year old Christian boy who has made a commitment to both his basketball coach and to God. One of those promises is only between him and his coach and no one else for specific reasons and the other promise is to God protecting those who persecute and beat him because they did not understand the promise made to their basketball coach.Throughout the book, he is hounded by his father and his new girlfriend to disclose the promise for which they have no understanding. But then, outsiders become involved and even though he is kidnapped and roughed up by two street thugs and locked up where he could possibly die, he refuses their highhanded techniques and honors the promise. Even a beautiful and sensuous girl who tries to wrangle the promise from him is unsuccessful because of his love of another girl and because of his unwavering love of God.
