Mere Discipleship – Radical Christianity in a Rebellious World

Mere Discipleship – Radical Christianity in a Rebellious World

Lee C. Camp

Brazos Press, Div of Baker Publishing Group
2008

What does it mean to be a disciple of Christ today? And are Christians really prepared for the answers? In Mere Discipleship, Lee Camp sets forth his vision of what it means to truly follow Christ, challenging Christians to put obedience to Jesus as Lord ahead of allegiances to all earthly authorities--be they nationalistic, political, economic, or cultural. Camp clearly lays out a sound biblical framework of what disciples believe and therefore what they should do. This substantially revised and expanded second edition updates examples, adds chapter introductions and summaries, and includes new study questions.
Kierkegaard on God’s Will and Human Freedom

Kierkegaard on God’s Will and Human Freedom

Søren Kierkegaard’s authorship exhibits two different trajectories concerning the relation of responsible human agency to sovereign divine agency: one trajectory stresses free human striving, while the other trajectory emphasizes the dominance of divine agency. The first theme led to the view of Kierkegaard as the champion of autonomous existential “leaps,” while the second led to the construal of Kierkegaard as a devout Lutheran who trusted absolutely in God’s gracious governance. Lee C. Barrett argues that Kierkegaard, influenced by Kant’s critique of metaphysics, did not attempt to integrate human and divine agencies in any speculative theory. Instead, Kierkegaard deploys them to encourage different passions and dispositions that can be integrated in a coherent human life, making use of literary strategies to foster the different passions and dispositions that are associated with the themes of human responsibility and divine governance. Kierkegaard on God’s Will and Human Freedom: An Upbuilding Antinomy offers an incisive account of what makes Kierkegaard’s conception of theology as a matter of edification rather than speculation so distinctive and enduringly worthwhile.

Discover Christ in this inspiring book by Dr.Lee C Turner entitled Discover Your Riches In Christ When we received Jesus Christ as our personal savior heaven opened up, God pured out His lavish grace, and gave us everything there was to give in Christ. He, "blessed us in heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ" (Ephesians 1:3). Yet I wonder how many believers have discovered the riches they have in Christ? After enumerating some of the riches in Christ that believers have, Paul added, "I pray also that the eyes of your heart (or understanding) may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength which he exerted in Christ" (vv. 18-19). Paul emphasized that these great truths must be more than intellectual knowledge. Head knowledge must become heart knowledge. The "eyes of our heart" must be "enlightened" so the "riches of his glorious inheritance" might become a reality in our innermost being. When someone says, "I see it " they mean they understand the reality of some truth. Something they knew intellectually suddenly gripped them and became a reality. It "dawned" on them and they were illuminated and impacted by it.

A popular TV show during the 80's was "Magnum, P.I." Folks are now seeing these episodes again, thanks to the 300 plus channels that are found on Cable T.V. In almost every episode, Thomas Magnum talks about "that little voice inside of him" that gives him advice when he's about to get into trouble. Hmmmm. What if there was something to that? Such a concept resonates inside of us, because there is a certain plausibility to "hearing from another part of ourselves" that is beyond the Cerebral. This book explores that realm, and is written by a prophet with 39] years of experience in that arena. It is filled with incredible stories to inspire you, and it has 11 chapters that instruct you on how to get to that same place. The final chapter encourages you, and says, "Someday, you may be the one saying, 'Gee, I'm Getting Good at Hearing His Voice.' "

The American university is facing an unprecedented assault from the president of the United States. Defences of the university usually emphasise the practical benefits it offers to society such as highly skilled graduates, scientific research and technological breakthroughs. Bollinger offers a more original account, revealing how the structure of the university contributes to the success of the American system, and why that structure is both impossible to re-create and vulnerable to outside attack. The fundamental mission of the university is to enhance knowledge but this is not merely a high-minded idea. It is, as Bollinger demonstrates, a notion rooted deeply in the Constitution. Bollinger argues that, with the press diminished, the university remains the only source of truth-seeking for those who still believe in democracy. The stakes are self-evident: the university must be defended if the American experiment is to continue.
Scandalous Witness: A Little Political Manifesto for Christians

Scandalous Witness: A Little Political Manifesto for Christians

Christian identity is in moral and political crisis, scandalized by the many ways in which it has been coopted and misrepresented. Addressing this painful reality, Lee Camp writes that Christianity in America has been made into a bad public joke because of "our failure to rightly understand what Christianity is." From this provocative claim, Camp's manifesto makes the convincing case that a renewed Christian politic is more essential than ever, one that is "neither left nor right nor religious," but a prophetic way of life modeled after Jesus of Nazareth. Camp's robust vision exposes modern parodies of faith--the American concept of "Christian values," for one--and challenges Christians to rethink who they are and how they participate in the modern world. Authentic gospel truth is a scandal to the American myth, he argues, and we are called to be scandalous witnesses.

I can never tnink of my Acadians without this picture in my mind, these families being driven from their homes, some separated from their loved ones, some old and sick, not knowing if or when they would meet again. Yet they had the presence of mind to take with them their records. These records were so important to them. The ones not written were carrded in their hearts and minds and the older people were ever so careful to impart this knowledge to each new generation. A great deal of their life centered around this interest in keeping family records and stories alive and con-stantly in the forefront of their minds and in the minds of each new generation.
