pokkari
In the world of academia, Professor Lisa Pruitt seemed to have it all; she was recognized with numerous awards for research, teaching, and mentoring over decades of educational pursuit. As her career rose, Lisa painstakingly created an academic fa ade to lock away what lay within: an insecure little girl who believed the wrong daughter survived after her baby sister's sudden death. At the peak of her career, a life-threatening horse accident became the catalyst for the collapse of her armor. Hitting rock bottom, Lisa had to face what she'd kept hidden for nearly three decades: an eating disorder and alcohol addiction. Deeply ashamed of her inner struggles, she refused to ask for help within her academic circles, yet traditional recovery paths failed to work. Instead, her beloved thoroughbred stepped up and served as her light during her darkest moments. As her healer and companion, JJ guided her through the hills and valleys of her recovery, enabling Lisa to rediscover her worthiness that had been there all along. Soul of a Professor is a remarkable story of resilience, perseverance, and-above all else-love.

Many adults who come from dysfunctional homes have been conditioned to deny their traumatic childhood experiences. Lisa A. Romano wrote El Camino de Regreso a M Sanar y Recuperarse de la Codependencia, la Adicci n, el Fomento del Comportamiento Disfuncional y la Baja Autoestima to help free the memories and emotions of adults who have been raised to be seen and not heard and who are suffering from codependency, anxiety, low self-worth, crippling self-doubt and depression. Romano is a certified life coach, meditation teacher, workshop facilitator, and creator of The 12 Week Breakthrough Coaching Program--as well as herself a survivor of depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and codependency.Unlike many other books written for adult children of alcoholics, narcissists, and those suffering from low self-worth, shame, and codependency, Camino de Regreso a M is written through the lens of the inner child who never felt good enough. This unique approach helps adults understand how they wound up not feeling good enough and unable to love and thus connect to the authentic self. This book helps those suffering with codependency finally understand that the problem is not them, it was only their programming. Romano's hope is that the account of her life will allow for the reader to see their own inner child in a way they may have been programmed to deny. To gain access to the higher self, Romano believes it is essential to integrate the experiences of the denied inner child. Molly doesn't know what or where her newest mystery is, but Tweets is definitely sending a new Morse code message. That, plus glorious Christmas time, is exciting enough, but Molly has to leave Nora in charge of finding a mystery on the home front. Why? Because her family is heading out of town (and so are you ) Get ready to leave snowless muddy Westerfield for a few days with Wally, Amelia, Mom Jane, Dad, Molly, Teddy and Pip. They are heading for a wintery adventure in a big old house in the country. Computer and phone service is a bit crackly, but the charm makes up for it (at least that's what the owners say). Get ready to discover a creepy closet, a new music machine for Pip, a cool princess tower, and some fishy clues, pets and people. Is the house actually haunted? Will Teddy, Pip or both be the hero and Knight in Shining Armor and save the day? Will Pip be able to write new hit singles so far from his home? Will there be Christmas miracles this year (or will the Grinch steal it like last year?). What will Tweets' mystery turn out to be?
Writing a Research Paper in Political Science

Writing a Research Paper in Political Science breaks down the research paper into its constituent parts and shows students what they need to do at each stage to successfully complete each component until the paper is finished. Practical summaries, recipes for success, worksheets, exercises, and a series of handy checklists make this a must-have supplement for any writing-intensive political science course.

Unrequited: The Thinking Woman's Guide to Romantic Obsession
Blending memoir, literary exposition, and revealing case studies, Unrequited is a powerful, surprising, and empathetic cultural and psychological exploration of one-sided romantic obsession. The summer Lisa A. Phillips turned thirty, she fell in love with someone who didn't return her feelings. She soon became obsessed. She followed him around, called him compulsively, and talked about him endlessly. One desperate morning, after she snuck into his apartment building, he picked up a baseball bat to protect himself and began to dial 911. Her unrequited love had changed her from a sane, conscientious college teacher and radio reporter into someone she barely recognized--someone who was taking her yearning much too far.In Unrequited, Phillips explores the tremendous force of obsessive love in women's lives. She argues that it needs to be understood, respected, and channeled for personal growth--yet it also has the potential to go terribly awry. Interweaving her own story with frank interviews and in-depth research in science, psychology, cultural history, and literature, Phillips describes how romantic obsession takes root, grows, and strongly influences our thoughts and behaviors.Going beyond images of creepy, fatally attracted psychos, male fantasies of unbridled female desire, and the platitudes of self-help books, Phillips reveals a powerful, troubling, and surprisingly common phenomenon. As she illuminates this mysterious psychological experience, placing it in a rich and nuanced context, she offers compelling insights to help any woman who has experienced unrequited obsessive love and been mystified and troubled by its grip.

Catholics in America

Catholics in America

Lisa A. Keister

OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS INC
2025

More than 20 percent of Americans are Catholic, and overall membership in the Catholic Church has remained relatively steady even as increasing numbers of people claim no religious affiliation. The rising prominence of Catholics in important leadership positions and critical demographic changes to the US population that have been mirrored in the Church have brought the Catholic Church and its members into public conversations, bringing renewed attention to the country's single largest religious organization. Yet misperceptions about who Catholics are today, their religious beliefs and practices, and their attitudes regarding important political and social issues are pervasive. Catholics in America provides a contemporary social portrait of this large, increasingly influential group that clarifies who Catholics are and what they really believe. Lisa Keister, a sociologist with decades of experience studying Americans' social and economic behaviors and attitudes, draws on extensive empirical evidence to uncover the real story of today's Catholics. She offers a fresh, new glimpse into the reality of the family behaviors, work and economic status, and beliefs of Catholics. She pays particular attention to differences between those who have left, joined, and stayed with the Church, and she documents important--sometimes dramatic--differences among Catholics that may define the Church in coming decades. The presence of Catholics in the country's highest positions and their voice in critical national conversations about issues such as abortion testify to the significance of their beliefs and attitudes. Catholics in America will be an important guide for anyone wanting to understand the personal and religious foundations of today's Catholics.

In the 1920s, the US government passed legislation against undocumented entry into the country, and as a result the figure of the “illegal alien” took form in the national discourse. In this book, Lisa A. Flores explores the history of our language about Mexican immigrants and exposes how our words made these migrants “illegal.”Deportable and Disposable brings a rhetorical lens to a question that has predominantly concerned historians: how do differently situated immigrant populations come to belong within the national space of whiteness, and thus of American-ness? Flores presents a genealogy of our immigration discourse through four stereotypes: the “illegal alien,” a foreigner and criminal who quickly became associated with Mexican migrants; the “bracero,” a docile Mexican contract laborer; the “zoot suiter,” a delinquent Mexican American youth engaged in gang culture; and the “wetback,” an unwanted migrant who entered the country by swimming across the Rio Grande. By showing how these figures were constructed, Flores provides insight into the ways in which we racialize language and how we can transform our political rhetoric to ensure immigrant populations come to belong as part of the country, as Americans.Timely, thoughtful, and eye-opening, Deportable and Disposable initiates a necessary conversation about the relationship between racial rhetoric and the literal and figurative borders of the nation. This powerful book will inform policy makers, scholars, activists, and anyone else interested in race, rhetoric, and immigration in the United States.
