Building Cost Planning for the Design Team

Building Cost Planning for the Design Team

Cost management of all building projects has become increasingly important as clients in the public and private sector demand the highest quality cost planning services with accurate budgeting and cost control. All members of the design team must integrate their activities to ensure that a high quality project is delivered on time and within budget. This book considers building cost planning and cost control from the client and the design team's perspective, where all decisions whether concerned with design, cost, quality, time, value or sustainability are taken as being interrelated. The latest Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Plan of Work and the New Rules of Measurement for Early Stage Estimating and Cost Planning issued by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) have been incorporated into this new text. The book follows the building design cost planning process from the crucial inception stages and then through all the design stages to the completion of the technical design, contract documentation and the tender. It provides a template for good cost planning practice. An essential addition to this third edition is the introduction of integrated design and documentation processes captured in building Information modelling (BIM), on-line cost databases and computerised methods of cost planning. The integrated approaches are explained and provide vital information and knowledge for practitioners involved in building projects. All stakeholders involved in development and design and client teams in public and private sector policy making and implementation need to understand the new approaches to design management processes and how cost planning and design approaches are adapting to using the new technology in practice. The interactive style, using in-text and review questions makes this ideal for students and practitioners alike in property, architecture, construction economics, construct

In the late 1980s, a promising new treatment for breast cancer emerged: high-dose chemotherapy with autologous bone marrow transplantation or HDC/ABMT. By the 1990s, it had burst upon the oncology scene and disseminated rapidly before having been carefully evaluated. By the time published studies showed that the procedure was ineffective, more than 30,000 women had received the treatment, shortening their lives and adding to their suffering. This book tells of the rise and demise of HDC/ABMT for metastatic and early stage breast cancer, and fully explores the story's implications, which go well beyond the immediate procedure, and beyond breast cancer, to how we evaluate other medical procedures, especially life-saving ones. It details how the factors that drove clinical use - patient demand, physician enthusiasm, media reporting, litigation, economic exploitation, and legislative and administrative mandates - converged to propel the procedure forward despite a lack of proven clinical effectiveness. It also analyses the failure of the technology assessments and randomised clinical trials that evaluated the procedure and the ramifications of this flawed system on healthcare today. Sections of the book consider the initial conditions surrounding the emergence of the new breast cancer treatment, the drivers of clinical use, and the struggle for evidence-based medicine. A concluding section considers the significance of the story for our healthcare system.

Dentists get a bad rap. Even though the dentist is often the first responder in the battle for a patient's healthy body, we sometimes fall prey to the fear that continues to circulate around this group of professionals sparked by long-ago stories about bad dental chair experiences. This book, A Cup of Coffee with "My" Dentist, hopes to change that-at least for a few dentists, anyway. The dentists whose stories reside within the covers of this book want you to know and understand them better as human beings and, as a bonus, they will teach you more about your teeth than you ever knew was possible. -What is "sedation dentistry," and are you a candidate? -Why not just pull that broken molar? Do you really need it? -Are dental implants right for you? -How long should I expect my natural teeth to last? (Can you spell f-o-r-e-v-e-r?) A Cup of Coffee with "My" Dentist will introduce some of the dedicated individuals who devote their days to caring for your mouth and, in so doing, make the rest of your body function the way it was meant to. You'll learn about their backgrounds, what inspires them, the fuel that drives them, and the reason that drive seems unquenchable.

Rome AD 68. The Apostle Peter is incarcerated in a dungeon, awaiting his death by crucifixion. He asks his best friend and Savior for a final blessing. In return, the Lord asks Peter to humble himself, once again, and reveal something he has kept secret for thirty five years. Just prior to the Lord's prophesy of Peter's denying of Him three times, the Lord informed Peter that Satan desired to have him, to sift him as wheat. This historical fiction book examines the struggle between Peter and Satan when Peter was at his weakest and most vulnerable point. Peter left the courtyard of Caiaphas in tears, "weeping bitterly". There is no mention of him in scripture of his whereabouts for the next two days. There are two scriptures in the New Testament that inform bible readers that Peter met with the resurrected Lord before he appeared to the other disciples. That must have been an extremely humbling moment for Peter. In my opinion, these two days were spent by Peter, trying to make things right-repenting of his lies. Peter may have felt unworthy of any blessing after lying and leaving his best friend and beloved Savior to suffer alone and this is exactly what Satan wanted. I believe this opportunity was not missed by Satan to try to convince Peter that he was not even worthy to pray or even to live, let alone be forgiven. I also believe that Peter recommitted to never place the fear of man above his devotion and trust in God again. I believe that Peter committed to stand boldly and testify of the divinity of Jesus as the Christ, even to the point of his own death. This "new creature"- a penitent, committed Peter, was only now ready to fearlessly do the bidding of the Lord and to take on the mantle of senior apostle following the ascension of the resurrected Christ. Peter fought through the severe buffeting of Satan and experienced first hand the divine, supreme and freely given mercy from Him who is most merciful. What once had been his weakness, now became Peter's strength. He would never deny Christ again. Moreover, Peter knew that Jesus was the redeemer of all and that He lived and was willing to extend His mercy to all who would come unto Him.

InterVarsity Press is proud to present The Lightfoot Legacy, a three-volume set of previously unpublished material from J. B. Lightfoot, one of the great biblical scholars of the modern era. In the spring of 2013, Ben Witherington III discovered hundreds of pages of biblical commentary by Lightfoot in the Durham Cathedral Library. While incomplete, these commentaries represent a goldmine for historians and biblical scholars, as well as for the many people who have found Lightfoot's work both informative and edifying, deeply learned and pastorally sensitive. In addition to the material on the Acts of the Apostles and the Gospel of St. John, published in volumes one and two, respectively, there were fragments on 2 Corinthians and 1 Peter. Lightfoot was well known as a Pauline expert given his commentaries on Galatians, Philippians, Colossians and Philemon, and fragments of his work on Romans, 1 Corinthians, Ephesians, and 1 and 2 Thessalonians were published posthumously. It is therefore a delight to have his notes on 2 Corinthians available for the first time. Lightfoot was also interested in the life and work of Peter. The introduction to his commentary on 1 Peter provides insightful analysis of the chronology and context of the epistle. Lightfoot seeks to demonstrate that Peter knew Paul's work and that these two great apostles were in harmony regarding theology and ethics. Now complete, these three commentary volumes reveal a scholar well ahead of his time, one of the great minds of his or any generation.
