Positive psychology is a thriving field with increasing political influence, yet there are few evolutionary studies that have had a tangible impact on rethinking mechanisms of well-being. This Element reviews existing literature and proposes synthesizing insights into human flourishing under an umbrella of multilevel selection (MLS). Conceptualizing quality of life as 'Happiness + Meaning = Well-being' draws attention to how people navigate between individual and group needs, and how they reconcile selfish pursuits with altruism and cooperation. We define happiness as the cluster of affects that reward individuals for solving adaptive challenges. We approach meaning as a reward that individuals experience when contributing to their community. By way of examples, we critically examine the Nordic well-being societies whose ethos and education advance prosocial values and practices and strike a balance between individualist and communitarian ideals. After taking readers on a 6-million-year journey through hominin mating regimes—with various extents of promiscuity, polygyny, and monogamy—Stories of Love from Vikings to Tinder investigates the past millennium's radical evolution of Western mating beliefs. Nordic literary works illuminate the pivotal transitions between the West’s First, Second, and Third Sexual Revolutions, which occurred around the years 1200, 1750, and 1968. The conclusion chapter points to the Fourth Sexual Revolution, symbolically placed in 2029. Artificial intelligence and other technologies seem likely to transform our mating practices more radically than any of the previous revolutions.

To have an 'experience' in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the famous Civil War battlefield, has taken on a range of new meanings in recent years. Almost instantly after the smoke had cleared following the battle in 1863, the field was transformed into an iconic site of memory and an emblem of American patriotism. Drawing on extensive ethnographic fieldwork in and around the alleged ’hallowed ground’ of Gettysburg, this book explores the experiential landscapes and 'sensescapes', examining the powerful appeal of the idea of a personal and historical 'experience' and its relations with paradigms of memory, heritage, and patriotism. Using empirical research to ground these often abstract and vague concepts and the ways in which they are translated into human and social practice, TITLE uses the notion of the 'Gettysburg experience' to scrutinize the processes through which the term 'experience' itself takes on, a range of different and contrasting meanings, as exemplified by experiences of the federal National Park Service and its ’battlefield rehabilitation’ programme, battle re-enactors seeking a bodily, first-person perspective on the fog of war, and practitioners of the paranormal: ghost hunters who aim to connect with the war dead through techniques and media wholly foreign to 'normal' regimes of commemoration. A moving account in words and pictures of a doctor at work in Gaza. This book is a medical doctor's account of what he witnessed in Gaza in the summer of 2014. It is the photo story you will not see on television or in the newspapers. On July 7, 2014, Israel launched a series of aerial attacks on Gaza, followed by the ground phase of the operation ten days later. Mads Gilbert arrived in Gaza on July 13th, and worked day and night for the next two weeks at Al-Shifa Hospital, dealing with casualties, repairing serious injuries, and trying to save lives. With the help of a small, black camera ready in the pocket of his green operating scrubs, he was able to document some of the human cost paid by the Palestinian people for enduring the Israeli occupation. He also kept a daily journal about the situation, with eye-witness accounts of the havoc wreaked by the Israeli attacks, and moving accounts of his interactions with ordinary Palestinians--men, women and children--who had done nothing to deserve the horrific disruption to their lives. What Gilbert experienced was awful, and it was immense--the sounds of bombs and screaming, bodies torn to pieces and a society reduced to rubble--but he also saw camaraderie, dignity, human courage and unflinching resolve.
