Historical Dictionary of the Gulf Arab States

Historical Dictionary of the Gulf Arab States

Malcolm C. Peck

Scarecrow Press
2007
sidottu
The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Gulf Arab States comes at a time when the world's attention is riveted on the Middle East. The small states covered in this volume—Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE)—possess about 20 percent of the world's total oil reserves. Beyond the strategic and economic importance conferred upon them by their vast oil reserves, the Gulf Arab states are worthy of attention for the inherent interest of their history and culture. No area of the world has yielded more revealing and exciting archaeological finds in the past few decades than these states. Investigations have brought to light extensive evidence of an important culture as old as Egypt of the Pharaohs or ancient Babylon, which was virtually unknown previously except through rare references in the records of other civilizations. This expanded second edition covers the history of the five countries through a chronology broken down by country, a list of acronyms and abbreviations, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and several hundred cross-referenced dictionary entries on important persons, places, and events of each country. Everything from the Abbasids to Zubarah is covered in this essential reference on this increasingly important region of the world.

Macroeconomics in Question

Macroeconomics in Question

Malcolm C. Sawyer

M.E. Sharpe
1982
sidottu
Originally published in 1982, this book has two central purposes. The first is to present a rather more critical view of the Keynesian and monetarist approaches to macro-economics than is usually found in major macro-economics text-books. The second is to present an alternative approach to macro-economics, derived in the main from the work of Michal Kalecki. It will become apparent below that the major difference between the conventional approaches to macro-economics and the Kaleckian one arises from a basic difference over the nature of a modern capitalist economy. The conventional approaches rest on a perfectly competitive view of the world whilst the Kalecki approach draws on an oligopolistic view. The book has been written to be accessible to undergraduate students of economics who have taken a basic second-year degree level course in macro-economics (as represented by text-books such as Branson, 1979; Gordon, 1981). Particularly in Chapters 2-4 a knowledge of conventional macro-economics is required. References are provided in the text and in footnotes for those wishing to pursue particular topics further. The book also contains much of interest for professional economists.

Becoming a Therapist is a unique practical manual, facilitating the movement and growth of the reader, whilst raising awareness of resistance to change. With challenging questions and exercises, it forces the reader to consider his or her own personal value systems, strengths and limitations as they relate to the practice of therapy, tackling vital issues such as: family; culture; gender; and ethics.Indispensable to counsellors, counselling psychologists and psychotherapists in training, Becoming a Therapist is a thought-provoking companion to personal and professional development.

More Reflections Painted in Verse

More Reflections Painted in Verse

Malcolm C Kirwan

iUniverse

pokkari
Many of us face feelings of powerlessness, unable to determine our destiny because we are often victims of our negative thoughts. Though we may be trapped in prisons of self-doubt, blind to the power of the possibilities within us, each of us is a work of art in progress, empowered by our dreams and by our visions of what we can achieve. More Reflections Painted in Verse seeks to offer proof that human beings, regardless of their callings in life, respond to the compelling power of the creative voice within them. It reveals poet Malcolm C. Kirwan's personal perspective on various themes: the fantasies, passions, joys, pain, and intrigue evoked by things romantic; the bonds of love that keep us united as families; the continuing search by persons of color for self-discovery; the power of the mind to define who we are; and the inspiration one can get from looking beyond one's limitations to one's possibilities. These verses reflect Kirwan's life experiences and his urge to contemplate and explore life's mysteries, portraying a search for self-discovery through the lens of poetry. Inspiring and uplifting, this collection of poetry examines our place on earth, the greater meaning of life and death, and all that happens in between to shape our destiny.
