Canada at the WTO

Canada at the WTO

Marc D. Froese

University of Toronto Press

Canada at the WTO is the first book devoted to exploring the relationship between the World Trade Organization's dispute settlement process and Canada's political economy. Early chapters address myths and facts about the WTO, introduce readers to Canada's role in the global economy, and explain Canada's objectives in being part of the WTO's dispute settlement process. Froese proceeds by examining the realities of these goals through five dispute settlement case studies: softwood lumber, the Canadian Wheat Board, Bombardier regional jets, split-run magazines, and Canadian pharmaceutical patents. What emerges is a clear picture of how resolutions made at the international level affect Canadian politics, industries, and employment and, conversely, how international governance can be used to protect national policies. Complete with 16 tables and an easy-to-reference appendix explaining the dispute settlement process, Canada at the WTO presents both critical and liberal traditions, offering an edifying investigation of Canada's economy and foreign relations, as well as an overarching discussion of the WTO's practices and effectiveness.

Horse people tend to be unusual, ranging from strikingly lovable to shockingly irritating. Each one has a story-or several-to tell, both happy and sad. Horse Scents presents a collection of thirteen intertwined stories that explore a year in the lives of boarders at one dusty old stable in suburban Atlanta. The tales within reveal a microcosm of humanity within the tiny but varied world of the stable, among the horses. They depict happiness and heartbreak, laughter and tears, romance and intolerance. As the characters-some that might appear to have familiar aspects-make their way through the year, their hopes, fears, secrets, dreams, plans, disasters, and nightmares all come out in ways that they could never have imagined. With horse scents, horse sense, and nonsense in abundance, this collection of short stories follows an interconnected set of people over the course of a year, through triumph and tragedy.

One year, month by month, in the lives of the boarders at CedarView Stable will bring humor and sadness, euphoric successes and devastating tragedy, life and death, romance and surprises, horse sense and nonsense.
