Humans are exposed daily to low concentrations of metals that are released into the environment by both natural and industrial processes. Environmental Metal Pollutants, Reactive Oxygen Intermediaries and Genotoxicity: Molecular Approaches to Determine Mechanisms of Toxicity examines concerns about the acute and/or chronic exposure of humans to concentrations of these metals that are below the threshold levels established by various federal regulatory agencies. Some of these metals are accumulated in various tissues and over time this may result in the accumulation of a significant body burden. This could increase the risk of developing a variety of diseases later in life, at a time when thresholds for such effects may already be reduced by the processes of aging. Such possibilities could only further compromise the quality of life in the elderly population and could contribute to the rising cost of health care in this country. Studies that have been conducted to determine the possible risks associated with exposure to relatively non-toxic concentrations of environmental metals have been hampered by a lack of appropriate models and a lack of funding. It has also been difficult for researchers to demonstrate a correlation between the exposure of humans or animals to low concentrations of environmental pollutants and disease. This book examines recent technological advances in the areas of molecular biology, biochemistry, and computer-enhanced image analyses that provide researchers with the tools to begin elucidating the genotoxic effects of environmental metal pollutants and the mechanisms by which these metals cause DNA damage. Environmental Metal Pollutants, Reactive Oxygen Intermediaries and Genotoxicity: Molecular Approaches to Determine Mechanisms of Toxicity presents data that demonstrate that certain environmental metal pollutants are genotoxic. The authors describe the role of reactive oxygen intermediates in causing the DNA damage induced by environmental metal pollutants and discuss their possible role in human disease.
Death and the Afterlife in Syriac Christianity

Death and the Afterlife in Syriac Christianity

In late antiquity as in the present age, death left its mark on the lives of families, communities, and societies. Syriac funerary hymns provide important insights into the social, emotional, funerary ritual histories of early Christian communities. Maria Doerfler here explores this body of largely ignored literature that has been attributed to Ephrem the Syrian. Different parts of the collection focus on individuals from a variety of social and ecclesiastical backgrounds: women and children, clergy and ascetics, as well as those who fell victim to natural disasters. The hymns provide insights not only into Syriac Christian ideas about death and the afterlife, but also into their existence, beliefs, and practices more broadly. Through engagement with different theoretical lenses, Doerfler uses instances of personal and communal crisis to elucidate historical and philosophical patterns among late antique Christians, addressing, inter alia, their responses to pandemics, understanding of wealth, and forging communal bonds that transcended death.

Communication is very important, in order to be understood and to be heard we must know how to speak, how to express ourselves and transmit our thoughts. From country to country there are many differences of meaning in the words, in the way of speaking, there is a different accent depending on which region a person lives in, learning to pronounce those words is good, those are particular details of each language. A language that is not our language is always difficult to express ourselves, but knowledge is the beginning of everything. We must learn, every day of our life we are learning something, whether we realize it or not. But how beautiful it was when we started to know and know our own language, our mother tongue. Taking time and learning, it is a great effort on our part, to focus on something positive to increase our knowledge and be better at knowing the expressions of a language, knowing how to conjugate verbs is indispensable, because, what can we speak without expressing a verb? surely not much. We have to organize ourselves and give ourselves time, because to learn something is to overcome ourselves, that is very important in this life. Let's learn now and our future will look better. And most important of all, we will feel better to better understand our environment, learning will bring new opportunities to our life, life that we must live because we are here, we live here on this earth. Go ahead, we can conquer our lives. I wish you a lot of success. Regards Thanks Maria
