Cultura e comparazione giuridica: Profili generali
The Eye of the Mind: Vision, Memory, and Meditation in Seventeenth-Century Ukrainian Preaching
In The Eye of the Mind, Maria Grazia Bartolini investigates how early modern Ukrainian preachers prompted their listeners to see and remember sermons by calling upon vision, memory, and mental imagery. With memorization recognized in Ukraine as a cognitive skill vital to the internalization of texts, these preachers, like their counterparts elsewhere in Europe, designed their sermons to enable listeners to see the subject matter as mental images and situate them in imaginary locations for easy recall. Based on analysis of little-known printed and manuscript sources from the second half of the seventeenth century, Bartolini masterfully demonstrates how verbal and visual images within the sermon functioned as mnemonic devices that helped Ukrainian preachers construct and deliver sermons and evoked intellectual and emotional associations in the minds of the audience. The effect of this rhetorical practice, Bartolini argues, was to create a theatrum meditationis--a memory theater--in which the audience was encouraged to take part as spectators. By fully integrating intellectual history, visual studies, and rhetorical analysis, The Eye of the Mind provides a unique perspective on seventeenth-century religious orators and their audiences in Ukraine and beyond.

English summary: The second volume of Palilia shows antiquities collected by members and patrons of the German Archaeological Institute, primarily in the early years after its foundation in 1829, and kept at the institute to this day. Greek-Roman marble works and Etruscan sculptures make up the largest part of the collection; there are also numerous inscriptios of historic significance, and even some Egyptian pieces.

Analysing Survival Data from Clinical Trials and Observational Studies provides a thorough yet accessible, practical guide for medical research professionals with limited statistical experience, with careful explanations of the underlying statistical and scientific principles which will be useful to clinicians and biostatisticians. Emphasising the concepts and methods rather than the theoretical background, the book covers *Estimation of survival curves. *Non-parametric methods for comparison of survival curves. *The Cox regression model. *The parametric regression model. *The study of prognostic factors. *Competing risks. Alternative data sets, taken from important real-life medical examples, are used throughout to demonstrate methods of analysis and reporting of results.

A practical guide to methods of survival analysis for medical researchers with limited statistical experience. Methods and techniques described range from descriptive and exploratory analysis to multivariate regression methods. Uses illustrative data from actual clinical trials and observational studies to describe methods of analysing and reporting results. Also reviews the features and performance of statistical software available for applying the methods of analysis discussed.

This volume presents a compendium of the history of the city of Suessa (Sessa Aurunca northern Campania, Italy) which was the principal settlement of the Italic peoples of Ausoni-Aurunci, and later became one of the most important cities of ancient Campania Felix. Based on the most recent archaeological discoveries, the authors examine both the urban structure of the city from Roman times and some of the main places devoted to public life (such as the forum and the theater), as well the suburban infrastructure, such as the roads connecting Suessa to the cities nearby. The work includes a review of the important figure of Matidia Minor and her much lauded philanthropy, of which there are so many testimonies in this part of ancient Italy. Two significant ancient monuments brought to light in this city are fully examined: The Roman theatre of the Imperial era and also the large suburban villa with its marbles, paintings, and mosaics."

This second edition sees the light three years after the first one: too short a time to feel seriously concerned to redesign the entire book, but sufficient to be challenged by the prospect of sharpening our investigation on the working of econometric dynamic models and to be inclined to change the title of the new edition by dropping the “Topics in” of the former edition. After considerable soul searching we agreed to include several results related to topics already covered, as well as additional sections devoted to new and sophisticated techniques, which hinge mostly on the latest research work on linear matrix polynomials by the second author. This explains the growth of chapter one and the deeper insight into representation theorems in the last chapter of the book. The rôle of the second chapter is that of providing a bridge between the mathematical techniques in the backstage and the econometric profiles in the forefront of dynamic modelling. For this purpose, we decided to add a new section where the reader can find the stochastic rationale of vector autoregressive specifications in econometrics. The third (and last) chapter improves on that of the first edition by re- ing the fruits of the thorough analytic equipment previously drawn up.
