It's funny how a piece of paper can change your life-a diploma, a ticket . . . a plain, white envelope For as long as I could remember, I was the girl with the plan. Good college, good medical school, good career. I would save lives instead of standing by helplessly, watching while they slipped away. That was before my father called for the first time in fifteen years to tell me about the terminal illness stealing his life-an illness that might be stealing mine, too. It was before he gave me the name of a doctor and a plane ticket to Italy. Before I flew across an ocean. Before I realized how brilliantly bright life could be. Before I met Lucas. He's everything I've always wanted, and the timing couldn't be worse. I can't do this to him-he deserves so much better. My head tells me I can't afford to fall in love with Lucas, but my heart won't listen. Lucas is fearless about the future, while I'm not even sure I have one. There's only one way to know what's ahead and it's waiting for me at home inside a plain, white envelope. All I have to do, is open it . . .

African American Women in the News

Marian Meyers

African American Women in the News offers the first in-depth examination of the varied representations of Black women in American journalism, from analyses of coverage of domestic abuse and "crack mothers" to exploration of new media coverage of Michelle Obama on Youtube. Marian Meyers interrogates the complex and often contradictory images of African American women in news media through detailed studies of national and local news, the mainstream and Black press, and traditional news outlets as well as newer digital platforms. She argues that previous studies of African Americans and the news have largely ignored the representations of women as distinct from men, and the ways in which socioeconomic class can be a determining factor in how Black women are portrayed in the news. Meyers also proposes that a pattern of paternalistic racism, as distinct from the "modern" racism found in previous studies of news coverage of African Americans, is more likely to characterize the media's treatment of African American women. Drawing on critical cultural studies and black feminist theory concerning representation and the intersectionality of gender, race and class, Meyers goes beyond the cultural myths and stereotypes of African American women to provide an updated portrayal of Black women today. African American Women in the News is ideal for courses on African American studies, American studies, journalism studies, media studies, sociology studies, women’s studies and for professional journalists and students of journalism who seek to improve the diversity and sensitivity of their journalistic practice.

News Coverage of Violence against Women

Marian Meyer's study sets an immediate standard for research on news coverage of violence against women. The study recognizes that multiple factors--culture, gender, race, socioeconomic issues, journalistic routines, and reporter consciousness--enter into the writing of such news. Meyer's work is comprehensive in analyzing both print and broadcast news, and her methods are wide-ranging, including textual and structural analyses, and interviewing. I see the usefulness of this book in reporting, theoretical, and methods classes. --Carolyn M. Byerly, Department of Television-Radio, Ithaca College This original new work demonstrates the troubling evidence that news coverage in American cities routinely depicts criminal violence against females differently than males. News Coverage of Violence Against Women discusses this tendency and how it perpetuates traditional, inegalitarian stereotyping about both men and women. Author Marian Meyers combines original research with qualitative textual analysis to disclose the underlying ideology, myths, and assumptions within news coverage, pointing out how news broadcasting affects our view of the world and how we live our lives. She also makes a strong case for the re-examination of crime news from a feminist perspective and for a broadening of traditional understandings of the social construction of news to include issues of gender, race, and class. News Coverage of Violence Against Women is an eye-opening work that will be of great interest to students, researchers, and professionals in a wide range of areas, including communication, media studies, mass communication, sociology, women's studies, cultural studies, and ethnic and gender studies.

Tracing the lives and works of five women in four case studies, author Marie Meyerding examines the representation of women in the field of photography in South Africa in the second half of the twentieth century. All of them are critically understudied, with no existing scholarship dedicated exclusively to their photographic contributions.Focusing on the representation of women on two different levels—as agents, behind the camera, and as subjects, in photographs—it showcases women photographers portraying their female contemporaries and analyses to what extent they adhered to or subverted common forms of gender representation. In recuperating their forgotten archives, the book argues that none of these women are marginal figures, but rather that each of them played a leading role in the field of photography in their own time. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, history of photography, gender studies, intersectionality and African studies.
