The Belgian Army and Society from Independence to the Great War

The Belgian Army and Society from Independence to the Great War

This book explores Belgian state-building through the prism of its army from independence to the First World War. It argues that party-politics, which often ran along geographical, linguistic, and religious lines, prevented both Flemings and Walloons from reconciling their regional identities into a unified concept of Belgian nationalism. Equally, it obstructed the army from satisfactorily preparing to uphold Belgium’s imposed neutrality before 1914. Situated uneasily between the two powerhouses of nineteenth-century Europe, Belgium offers a unique insight into the concepts of citizenship and militarisation in a divided society in the era of fervent nationalism. By examining the composition, experience, and image of the army’s officer corps and rank and file, as well as those of the auxiliary forces, this book shows that although military and civilian society often stood aloof from one another, the army, as a national institution, offered a fleeting glimpse into the dichotomy thatwas pre-war Belgium.

Guaraní Spirituality in Letters from the War

Guaraní Spirituality in Letters from the War

In this research, Guarani Spirituality is presented as one of the causes of the actions of the Guarani of the Jesuit Missions of the Argentine Littoral within the framework of the South American War of Independence between 1810 and 1830, which go beyond the political interests of the Spanish and Portuguese at that time. Spirituality should be understood as an element that transcends religiosity, which leads people to do what they do. The spirit is that impulse that every human being has, his way of being, which is bounded by the most diverse factors, giving a person and a whole society, a series of its own characteristics. Particularly, the warlike actions developed in the Argentine Littoral, the Guarani imprinted certain movements very characteristic of them. These will be analyzed in a series of documentations written by the Guarani, where the Guarani spirituality can be perceived. These documentations will be contrasted with texts written by Creole and Portuguese leaders, in which the lack of this Guarani spirituality can be seen.

Served by dozens of daily flights from cities all around the world, Puerto Rico is unusually easy to reach, balmy and warm throughout the year, full of fine beaches, pools and golf courses, blessed with historic sights and museums, jammed with good quality lodgings, restaurants and shops -- and inexpensive-to-moderate to enjoy. But instead of drowning the reader in massive descriptions of the places that vacationers use, our author confines himself to a smaller, but still comprehensive, list of preferences -- his own several favorites in every price range. He is John Marino, a distinguished journalist on a San Juan, Puerto Rico, daily newspaper, and no one knows Puerto Rico (including Vieques and Culebra) better than him. Frommer's is proud to have snared such a skilled and experienced observer as the author of our guide to this popular U.S. Commonwealth.

The archaeology of the Maltese archipelago is remarkable. Lying at the heart of the central Mediterranean, ancient lives were, at times, moulded by isolation and harsh elements and the landscape is shaped by millennia of intensive land use. Ancient finds from the islands are rare, and those held in the British Museum form an important collection. Represented is a wide cultural range, spanning the Early and Late Neolithic, the Bronze Age, Roman and more recent historic periods. From the early 1880s, Malta attracted a fascinating array of historians, collectors and travellers and, on one level, the British Museum’s holdings represent their activities, but on another, the collections reflect the complex path antiquarianism has played out in Malta as it moved steadily toward fledgling archaeological investigations. Significantly, artefacts excavated by notable Maltese archaeologist, Sir Themistocles Zammit, at the key Neolithic site of Tarxien, and those uncovered by Margaret Murray at Borg in-Nadur form a crucial part of the collection.
