The Post Office was central to Britain’s effort to win the Second World War. From sending mail to connecting telephone calls and processing war savings certificates, its functions united a nation in a sense of common purpose and camaraderie, but also connected Britain with the outside world. Yet, owing to the pressures of military conscription, these essential functions, required to maintain morale on both on the home and military front, were discharged by women workers, many of whom had not previously undertaken such important and complex work. Drawing on a range of archival material, Mark J. Crowley highlights the role of the Post Office and public service in Britain’s Second World War home front experience, and examines the vital contribution of women in this area, which has, until now, received little attention from historians. While primarily focusing on the personnel practices affecting the position of women workers in the Post Office and public service, he also draws on the experiences of women workers through surviving oral history accounts, and the limited existing archival material recorded by women workers at the time. While this is not a social history of women's employment in Britain, it will seek to place their experiences of work and duty to the public service in the wider context of the government's expectations of women during the war effort.

Challenging Racism in Higher Education provides conceptual frames for understanding the historic and current state of intergroup relations and institutionalized racial (and other forms of) discrimination in the U.S. society and in our colleges and universities. This book adopts an organizational level of analysis of these issues, integrating both micro and macro perspectives on organizational functioning and change. It concretizes these issues by presenting the voices and experiences of college students, faculty and administrators, and linking this material to research literature via interpretive analyses of people's experiences. Many examples of concrete and innovative programs are provided in the text that have been undertaken to challenge, ameliorate or reform such discrimination and approach more multicultural and equitable higher educational systems. It draws on new methods that make it possible to investigate segregation involving small groups and segregation patterns in nonmetropolitan communities with greater accuracy and clarity than has previously been possible. As one example, the authors are able to track residential segregation patterns across a wide selection of nonmetropolitan communities where Black, Latino, and Asian populations are small but can still potentially experience segregation. The authors also track White-Latino segregation from its inception when Latino households first arrived in non-negligible numbers in new destination communities and then document how segregation changes over time as the Latino population grows over time to become larger and more established. Finally, this work shows how segregation of Latino and Asian households is fundamentally different from that of Black households based on the much greater role that cultural and socioeconomic characteristics play in shaping White-Latino and White-Asian segregation in comparison to White-Black segregation.
