Im Vergleich zu Westdeutschland scheint die US-amerikanische Besatzungspolitik in Japan nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg tiefgreifend und pragend gewesen zu sein. Insbesondere das japanische Bildungssystem wurde nach 1945 ausserlich amerikanisiert schon ein Blick auf Entscheidungs- und Implementierungsprozesse von Reformen zeigt jedoch, dass der Einfluss der Besatzer weit geringer war als gemeinhin angenommen. Der Eindruck des Neuanfangs 1945 relativiert sich weiter, wenn man die umfassenden japanischen Diskussionen uber Bildungsreform der 1920er und 1930er Jahre mit in den Blick nimmt. Im vorliegenden Buch untersucht der Autor anhand umfangreicher japanischer und US-amerikanischer Quellen den Reformdiskurs und die Reformpraxis im Hochschulwesen in Japan zwischen 1919 und 1952. Im Einzelnen zeigt er, dass alle wesentlichen nach 1945 erfolgreich umgesetzten Reformen Abschaffung der elitaren Oberschulen, Offnung der Universitaten fur Frauen, Vereinheitlichung der unterschiedlichen Hochschultypen, Verwissenschaftlichung der Lehramtsausbildung bereits in den 1920er und 1930er Jahren detailliert und entscheidungsnah vordiskutiert wurden. Damit liefert die Studie einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Frage nach Kontinuitaten und Diskontinuitaten in der japanischen Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts.
