Living Ethically, Acting Politically

Living Ethically, Acting Politically

Melissa A. Orlie

Cornell University Press
1997
pokkari
How can we conceive of freedom and responsibility when our power is limited and we are subject to the forces of society? Melissa A. Odie asks what it means to live responsibly amid historical harm and wrongdoing, in the wake of slavery and genocide, or in the face of severe resource asymmetries. By connecting resistance to evil with reflections on the nature of power and political action, Odie reveals the daily ways people commonly exercise power, inflict harm, and show themselves capable of actions that transform both selves and the world. Viewed in this context, truly ethical political action may appear miraculous but could happen at any time. Odie asks what it means to live freely when advantages are distributed disproportionately according to race, gender, class, culture, and religion. What do freedom and responsibility entail when, for example, creating a home for oneself implies social and economic commitments that render others homeless? To address these questions, Orlie links diverse intellectual concerns and constituencies in the social sciences and humanities, offering original interpretations of Hannah Arendt, Michel Foucault, and Thomas Hobbes. She compares their thinking to that of the seventeenth-century Quakers who found political possibilities in the powers they called "spirit" in the world and in themselves.
Regression with Dummy Variables

Regression with Dummy Variables

Melissa A Hardy

SAGE Publications Inc
1993
nidottu
Social scientists are often interested in studying differences in groups, such as gender or race differences in attitudes, buying behaviors, or socioeconomic characteristics. When the researcher seeks to estimate group differences through the use of independent variables that are qualitative (i.e., measured at only the nominal level), dummy variables will allow the researcher to represent information about group membership in quantitative terms without imposing unrealistic measurement assumptions on the categorical variables. Beginning with the simplest model, Hardy probes the use of dummy variable regression in increasingly complex specifications, exploring issues such as: interaction, heteroscedasticity, multiple comparisons and significance testing, the use of effects or contrast coding, testing for curvilinearity, and estimating a piecewise linear regression.
Ritual and Myth in Odawa Revitalization

Ritual and Myth in Odawa Revitalization

Melissa A. Pflug

University of Oklahoma Press
1998
sidottu
This interdisciplinary account of a contemporary Great Lakes Algonkian community explores how the ethical system underlying Odawa (Ottawa) myth and ritual sustains traditionalists' efforts to confront the legal and social issues threatening tribal identity. Because many Odawa are not members of federally recognized communities, anthropologist Melissa A. Pflug focuses on their struggle to overcome long-term social marginalization and achieve collective sovereignty. In profound ways, contemporary Odawa people are ""walking the paths"" of their ancestors Neolin, Pontiac, The Trout, and Tenskwatawa. Those prophetic leaders, together with mythic Great Persons, established a legacy tied to land, language, and tradition - a sovereign identity that defines Odawa life in terms of pimadaziwin: life-sustaining, moral, and healthy interrelationships.

Frontier Life in Ancient Peru

Frontier Life in Ancient Peru

Melissa A. Vogel

University Press of Florida

Melissa Vogel's Frontier Life in Ancient Peru offers a new perspective on ancient Peruvian life and geopolitics during a pivotal period of Andean cultural transformation between AD 900 and AD 1300. Focusing on the frontier site of Cerro la Cruz in the Chao Valley (located on the northern border of the Casma polity), this volume richly details the role of cross-cutting social networks and the dynamics of shifting political boundaries in prehistoric north coast Peru. The rise of the Chimuacute Empire caused the Chao Valley to become a border zone between the Casma and their encroaching neighbors. The artifacts recovered from sites in this area paint an illuminating picture of the everyday lives of ancient Andean people in this unique yet - until recently - under-studied culture.Vogel's systematic and comprehensive volume synthesizes information about the societies in this region while also expanding and clarifying the definition of Casma-style ceramics and architecture for comparison with other sites. As the first English-language work on the Casma polity, this is a powerful new resource for understanding an important pre-Inca culture as well as a fascinating investigation of the forces at work in the development and collapse of complex societies.
Casma City of El Purgatorio

Casma City of El Purgatorio

Melissa A. Vogel

University Press of Florida
2016
sidottu
The Casma state, which flourished on the north coast of Peru in the centuries before European contact, is an important and vastly understudied ancient culture. Its capital city, El Purgatorio, was inhabited from ca. 700–1400 AD. The rise and fall of El Purgatorio spans a period of dynamic transition in Andean history but has rarely been mentioned in previous research. Melissa Vogel investigates this extensive, monumental urban site in The Casma City ofEl Purgatorio. Using the city’s architecture and spatial organization, its rituals, religion, and mortuary practices, its political economy, and other material evidence, she describes the people who lived there. A culmination of Vogel’s sixteen-year study of the Casma culture, this book demonstrates how ancient cities help us understand the development and collapse of complex societies.

Moving beyond the 'main dishes' of traditional literary works, ""Side Dishes"" offers a provocative and delicious new understanding of Latin American women's authorship and activism. The book illuminates a wealth of creative and intellectual work by Latin American women - editors, directors, cartoonists, academics, performance artists, and comedians - and explores them in light of their treatment of women's sexuality. ""Side Dishes"" considers feminist pornography and literary representations of masturbation, bisexuality, lesbianism, and sexual fantasies; the treatment of lust in stand-up comedy and science fiction; critical issues in leading feminist journals; and portrayals of sexuality in four contemporary Latin American films. Melissa A. Fitch concludes with a look at the rise of women's and gender studies programs in Latin America.
Becoming Creole

Becoming Creole

Melissa A. Johnson

Rutgers University Press

Becoming Creole explores how people become who they are through their relationships with the natural world, and it shows how those relationships are also always embedded in processes of racialization that create blackness, brownness, and whiteness. Taking the reader into the lived experience of Afro-Caribbean people who call the watery lowlands of Belize home, Melissa A. Johnson traces Belizean Creole peoples’ relationships with the plants, animals, water, and soils around them, and analyzes how these relationships intersect with transnational racial assemblages. She provides a sustained analysis of how processes of racialization are always present in the entanglements between people and the non-human worlds in which they live.

Making War, Making Women

Making War, Making Women

Melissa A. McEuen

University of Georgia Press

Drawing on war propaganda, popular advertising, voluminous government records, and hundreds of letters and other accounts written by women in the 1940s, Melissa A. McEuen examines how extensively women’s bodies and minds became “battlegrounds” in the U.S. fight for victory in World War II.Women were led to believe that the nation’s success depended on their efforts—not just on factory floors, but at their dressing tables, bathroom sinks, and laundry rooms. They were to fill their arsenals with lipstick, nail polish, creams, and cleansers in their battles to meet the standards of ideal womanhood touted in magazines, newspapers, billboards, posters, pamphlets and in the rapidly expanding pinup genre. Scrutinized and sexualized in new ways, women understood that their faces, clothes, and comportment would indicate how seriously they took their responsibilities as citizens. McEuen also shows that the wartime rhetoric of freedom, democracy, and postwar opportunity coexisted uneasily with the realities of a racially stratified society. The context of war created and reinforced whiteness, and McEuen explores how African Americans grappled with whiteness as representing the true American identity.Using perspectives of cultural studies and feminist theory, Making War, Making Women offers a broad look at how women on the American home front grappled with a political culture that used their bodies in service of the war effort.

Laria calls the Destined back to Aorea to find and face the darkness she cannot see. With its plethora of magical creatures including sanguines, leshii, lanti, necromancers, and a detailed history and lore of Aorea, Melissa Murray's narrative pulls you deep into an immersive world full of wonder and awe. The author takes her time setting up the plot but halfway through the book, the narrative picks up speed and flies by in its final stretch. I couldn't pick a favorite between the characters as everyone felt distinct and I was mesmerized by every single one of them. Despite being the second book in the series, Hidden also works out as a standalone. I was thoroughly entertained and I would highly recommend it to fantasy readers."Rated 5-stars by Readers' Favorite.Loosely inspired by Slavic mythology and folklore, Hidden is the second novel in the Circle Series by M.A.I. Murray, whose background in language, folklore, and engineering combine with her military experience to add a fresh spin on fantasy tropes. You may find unicorns and dragons in the land of Aorea, but they will not be the ones you'd expect.

The author recounts her story of surviving late-stage cancer while suffering with the rare autoimmune disease called scleroderma. Slowly what she describes as a 'dark, unseen force' began to take over her body and her life. Her quest for an answer soon began, and grew in desperation as the weeks and months past.Initially thrilled to have a diagnosis finally, she quickly learned that the diagnosis was only the beginning. She was informed that there would be no cure, the illness would progress over time and that it very well could take her life.
