The copious attention visited on romanticism during recent decades has only rarely resulted in comprehensive theoretical constructions. This new work by Michael Cooke, offering an explicit theory of romanticism, is thus both needed and valuable. Cooke proposes that the multifariousness of the movement—found in single works and authors and compounded in the cross-relations among authors—is not an obstacle but a clue to grasping the singular essence of romanticism. The romantic writer, refusing the cloak of hereditary values and forms, looks for value in a context of uncertainty and openness on a principle of essential non-exclusiveness. For anything possible to be posited, everything possible must be taken into account. The concept of inclusion, manifesting itself at almost any level—formal, thematic, generic, rhetorical, actional, or passional—underlies and reconciles much of romanticism’s apparent diversity, inconsistency, and incongruity: indeed, romantic literature may be said to constitute acts of inclusion.Cooke explores his thesis in chapters on romanticism and the universality of art; on elegy, prophecy, and satire; on the norm of consequences in romanticism; on the feminine as the crux of value; on the mode of argument, especially in Wordsworth’s poetry; and on Don Juan as a test case of romantic form, exhibiting at once the obsession and the self-discipline of spontaneity. Arguing cogently and originally, he comes to terms with a fundamental truth about romanticism.

This text is meant to serve as the basis for a two-course series in the study of radiation protection (a. k. a. “health physics”). The ?rst course would be an introduction to and fast-paced overview of the subject. For some, this is the only course in radiation protection that they will take, and thus all material must be covered in a fairly super?cial and rapid fashion. The second course is a more in-depth and applied study of radiation protection, bringing in current materials from the literature, a detailed study of regulations, practice with re- world dose and shielding calculations, and perhaps application in a semest- long student project assigned by the instructor. Several chapters include an additional section of suggested readings and other resources that can be used by the instructor to build such detailed investigations in a second course of this nature. In the ?rst course, the chapter may be basically studied, with reference to the idea that a much richer literature base exists than can be covered in a broad overview of radiation protection. Through exploration of this literature base, and other similar materials that the instructor may be aware of that are not speci?cally cited, this second, more in-depth course may be developed. A routine part of any good health physics program is a complete course in radiation detection and measurement. My brief overview chapter here cannot provide the depth needed for this subject.
In this, the third volume of Advances in Child Neuropsychology, the editors have once again enlisted a broad range of contributors, each of whom has written a chapter that brings us to the current level of knowl edge in their respective area. The topics range from the relationship between electrophysiological responses in infants and later language development to advances in neuropsychological constructs. Although we still do not know enough about brain-behavior relationships in the normally developing brain, let alone in the atypical brain, a good deal of innovative, exciting, and very meaningful research is herein presented that furthers our understanding of neurodevelopmental issues. The cur rent volume reflects some of the results of an active period of research in child neuropsychology. It serves to further our knowledge of the field in all of its diversity and, perhaps, to provide the spark of interest or sudden "aha!" to the reader that will lead to new insights and productive research endeavors. The first chapter, contributed by Molfese, is perhaps somewhat tech nical in its presentation for the electrophysiologically uninitiated. How ever, its results and discussion sections follow up findings related to some of the data presented in Volume 1. The earlier work, which suggested that electrophysiological responses can be used to predict long-term developmental outcomes, is supported in the present report on the relationship between auditory evoked responses in infancy and later levels of language development.

In the 1790s, a close-knit group of German philosophers published several garden theory texts. These works are unique in that a close-knit group of philosophers had never before--and has not since--produced so many works on the topic of garden design. In essence, this cohort sought to imbue the most visionary concepts that had been inherited from the German garden tradition with the intellectual resources that were newly available through Kant’s critical philosophy. The most important of these concepts was the prescription for a new Mittelweg, or "middle path," garden that would mediate between the perceived excesses of French formalism and the English picturesque. In close analysis, the author demonstrates that Kant used similar "middle path" techniques in the design of his own "critical path" between dogmatism and skepticism. This similarity is most apparent when he uses topographical metaphors to describe the organizational principles of his system. By interpreting Kant’s topographical metaphors in relation to contemporary garden theories, this book offers new insights into the structural similarities between his "critical path" and the German garden’s "middle path" between French formalism and the English picturesque.
