The Political Economy of Kenya is a collection of timely and up-to-date essays focusing on the interaction of politics and economics in Kenya's domestic political arena. The essays, written by scholars from Kenya, the United States, and Great Britain, contain in-depth presentation based on contemporary research. For example, the contributors stress the interdependence of politics and economics in determining political outcomes and examine the Kenyan political system in that light. Chapters discuss such topics as Kenyan agriculture, urbanization and spatial planning, public enterprises, public policy and reform, and specific case studies on labor and social issues.
Written by an inmate serving 45 years for a drug conviction when he was 23, this is an in-depth view living behind bars from the perspective of prisoners themselves. Sections of the book are based on length of imprisonment. Prisoners in Fort Dix, N.J., detail their unique experiences, thoughts, and feelings about life on the inside. Some describe the actions that lead to their confinement, or detail the complexities of living in all-male communities. Others reveal the ways they cope with their terms, or the expectations they have for life after prison.Santos offers the gripping stories of men serving a variety of terms, providing commentary and analysis as he guides readers through the prison experience. How men adjust to their confinement, and how they utilize their time while serving their sentences, can be a predictor of future success or failure both in prison and society upon their release. Through these often-difficult accounts, readers gain a greater understanding of what it means to be a prisoner, and how the system itself can contribute to both positive adjustment and negative outcomes alike.
The copious attention visited on romanticism during recent decades has only rarely resulted in comprehensive theoretical constructions. This new work by Michael Cooke, offering an explicit theory of romanticism, is thus both needed and valuable. Cooke proposes that the multifariousness of the movement—found in single works and authors and compounded in the cross-relations among authors—is not an obstacle but a clue to grasping the singular essence of romanticism. The romantic writer, refusing the cloak of hereditary values and forms, looks for value in a context of uncertainty and openness on a principle of essential non-exclusiveness. For anything possible to be posited, everything possible must be taken into account. The concept of inclusion, manifesting itself at almost any level—formal, thematic, generic, rhetorical, actional, or passional—underlies and reconciles much of romanticism’s apparent diversity, inconsistency, and incongruity: indeed, romantic literature may be said to constitute acts of inclusion.Cooke explores his thesis in chapters on romanticism and the universality of art; on elegy, prophecy, and satire; on the norm of consequences in romanticism; on the feminine as the crux of value; on the mode of argument, especially in Wordsworth’s poetry; and on Don Juan as a test case of romantic form, exhibiting at once the obsession and the self-discipline of spontaneity. Arguing cogently and originally, he comes to terms with a fundamental truth about romanticism.
Afro-American Literature in the Twentieth Century

Michael Cooke examines the essential structure of Afro-American literature as it has developed in the twentieth-century, with special attention to works by Jean Toomer, Zora Neal Hurston, Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, Robert Hayden, and Alice Walker.
Most of us realize that traffic laws exist to preserve our lives, not cramp them. Yet when it comes to moral laws, 66 percent of Americans believe there are no absolutes. Is it any wonder, then, that the highway of our postmodern culture is strewn with wrecks? Broken marriages, overcrowded prisons, murder in the classrooms, babies having babies - -they're what happen when we confuse liberty with ignoring the rules of the road. That's why Michael Moriarty is convinced that the Ten Commandments really are The Perfect 10. Behind them lie God's concern for our welfare and his understanding of the indelible truths that govern our world, our relationships, and our inner being. One by one, Moriarty reveals the Ten Commandments as the keys to wholeness and freedom and shows their far-reaching application for us today. For the Perfect 10 remain the ideal ethical compass. They help us align our lives with the character of God; and to a world hurtling blindly down the dead-end road or moral relativism, they point the way back to sanity, restoration, and life.
The Protestant Reformation, begun with Martin Luther’s posting of The Ninety-Five Theses in 1517, rapidly escalated into an evangelical reform movement that transformed European Christianity. Less than a decade later, a massive rebellion of German commoners challenged the social and political order in what would prove to be the greatest popular rebellion in European history until the French Revolution. In this volume, Michael Baylor explores the relationship between these two momentous upheavals — one enduring, the other fleeting — and the centuries-long debate over whether and how they might be connected. A collection of period documents offer first-hand accounts from the reformers, rebels, and the institutions they sought to topple.
Eighteenth-Century British and American Rhetorics and Rhetoricians

Eighteenth-century rhetorical theory and rhetoricians figured prominently in the development of contemporary composition and rhetoric. This reference provides critical overviews of the careers and contributions of all major and many minor British and American rhetoricians of the 18th century. The volume begins with an introduction that discusses the various rhetorical movements of the time, including the importance of women to rhetorical theory. The entries that follow are arranged alphabetically, and each provides a bibliography of important primary and critical sources. A bibliography of general sources on 18th-century rhetoric concludes the work.
This comprehensive resource follows the pivotal and often overlooked efforts of the Iroquois Confederacy, the Dutch, the French, and the English colonies to control the strategic waterways of the Hudson-Champlain corridor from their discovery to the fall of New France. From Champlain and Hudson's initial voyages some 400 years ago, to the surrender of Montreal in 1760, The European Invasion of North America: Colonial Conflict Along the Hudson - Champlain Corridor, 1609–1760 offers unprecedented coverage of the 150-year struggle between New World rivals along this natural invasion route—a struggle which would ultimately determine the destiny of North America.Unlike other volumes on this period, The European Invasion of North America includes extensive coverage from the French and Dutch as well as British perspectives, examining events in the context of larger colonial confrontations. Drawing on hundreds of firsthand accounts, it recaps political maneuvers and blunders, military successes and failures, and the remarkable people behind them all: cabinet ministers in Paris, Amsterdam, and London; colonial leaders such as Stuyvesant, Frontenac, and Montcalm; shrewd diplomats of the Iroquois Confederacy; and soldiers and families on all sides of the conflict. It also highlights the growing friction between Britain and her American colonies, which would soon lead to a different war.

A text using the concept of arbitrage to value securities, that is to construct the elements of financial economics. Divided into three parts, the book develops the foundations for the study, applies the basic theorem in a single-period setting and extends the discussion to a many-period setting.
Written by one of the world's leading experts in the field of nuclear medicine dosimetry, this text describes in detail the use of internal dose calculations in the practice of nuclear medicine. While radiation therapy with external sources of radiation always employs calculations of dose to optimize therapy for each patient, this is not routinely conducted in nuclear medicine therapy. As the trend towards an increasing role of dosimetry in therapy planning increases, this book reviews the available methods and technologies available to make this a more common practice. The book begins by covering the mathematical fundamentals of internal dose calculations, and uses sample calculations to demonstrate key principles. The book then moves forward to describe anthropomorphic models, dosimetric models, and types and uses of diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals. The depth of coverage makes it useful reference and guide for researchers performing dose calculations and for physicians considering incorporating dose calculations into the treatment of their cancer patients.
This book outlines certain durable properties of multi-layered practice of artistic and intellectual invention by confronting it with the complex theoretical and spatial metaphor of utopia. It encourages understandings of the poetic and the utopian in the twentieth-century French literary context.
Multigenerational Communication in Organizations

Multigenerational Communication in Organizations explores generational differences in the changing workplace from a communication perspective. Starting from the reality that a workplace can contain up to five different generations, these chapters examine topics like generational perceptions on the job search process; organizational culture; organizational identification; organizational crises; the dark side of workplace communication; remote working; and future challenges. Outlines of best practices and suggestions for application are provided based on the most recent data and corresponding literature. The authors also develop a data-forward understanding of Generation Z in context. This book is ideal for both scholars and practitioners in organizational communication and management, as well as for workplace managers and supervisors.
This text is meant to serve as the basis for a two-course series in the study of radiation protection (a. k. a. “health physics”). The ?rst course would be an introduction to and fast-paced overview of the subject. For some, this is the only course in radiation protection that they will take, and thus all material must be covered in a fairly super?cial and rapid fashion. The second course is a more in-depth and applied study of radiation protection, bringing in current materials from the literature, a detailed study of regulations, practice with re- world dose and shielding calculations, and perhaps application in a semest- long student project assigned by the instructor. Several chapters include an additional section of suggested readings and other resources that can be used by the instructor to build such detailed investigations in a second course of this nature. In the ?rst course, the chapter may be basically studied, with reference to the idea that a much richer literature base exists than can be covered in a broad overview of radiation protection. Through exploration of this literature base, and other similar materials that the instructor may be aware of that are not speci?cally cited, this second, more in-depth course may be developed. A routine part of any good health physics program is a complete course in radiation detection and measurement. My brief overview chapter here cannot provide the depth needed for this subject.
Fundamentals of Nuclear Medicine Dosimetry

If you reveal your secrets to the wind, you should not blame the wind for revealing them to the trees. —From The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran This was a very satisfying book to write, but also perhaps a very dangerous one. After 15 years of building a base of knowledge in radiopharmaceutical dosimetry (under the expert guidance of Evelyn Watson at the Oak Ridge Dosimetry Center), 8 years of teaching radiation protection and dosimetry at the university level (in northeastern Brazil and at Vanderbilt University in the United States), and Photo used with permission. Copyright © OregonVacationBeaches.com. Also see Memorable-Beach-Vacations.com. v vi Preface authoring a number of papers and book chapters on the subject, it was rewarding to write down in a single, organized text nearly all that I have learned on this topic. My deepest desire is that this text will be found useful by members of the nuclear medicine and radiation protection community in formalizing and facilitating such calculations. After learning a technique for performing dose calculations that must be done often, I have often found ways to automate such work in software tools and to make such tools available to others in order to help them shortcut their efforts. One of the greatest rewards I have received in my work has been to see a few of the tools and ideas that I have developed become useful to others in their routine work.
Advances in Child Neuropsychology

In this, the third volume of Advances in Child Neuropsychology, the editors have once again enlisted a broad range of contributors, each of whom has written a chapter that brings us to the current level of knowl edge in their respective area. The topics range from the relationship between electrophysiological responses in infants and later language development to advances in neuropsychological constructs. Although we still do not know enough about brain-behavior relationships in the normally developing brain, let alone in the atypical brain, a good deal of innovative, exciting, and very meaningful research is herein presented that furthers our understanding of neurodevelopmental issues. The cur rent volume reflects some of the results of an active period of research in child neuropsychology. It serves to further our knowledge of the field in all of its diversity and, perhaps, to provide the spark of interest or sudden "aha!" to the reader that will lead to new insights and productive research endeavors. The first chapter, contributed by Molfese, is perhaps somewhat tech nical in its presentation for the electrophysiologically uninitiated. How ever, its results and discussion sections follow up findings related to some of the data presented in Volume 1. The earlier work, which suggested that electrophysiological responses can be used to predict long-term developmental outcomes, is supported in the present report on the relationship between auditory evoked responses in infancy and later levels of language development.
This new book covers the origins purposes, trends and controversies of the United Nations' global conferences. There are 30 such conferences to compare, and many argue that they have not been worth the money spent on them. Others, however, suggest that they offer the only effective way to address global problems, like racism, sexism, overpopulation, environmental degradation, overfishing, urbanization, and the proliferation of small arms. This is the first comprehensive study of this key topic, delivering information essential to the ongoing debate on multilateralism, with examinations of:* the typical structure of a conference* description of the Global Conferences * substantive and institutional outcomes of the conferences* changes resulting from the conferences * UN Conferences as mechanisms for coping with the problems of the 21st CenturyThis book is essential reading for students of the United Nations, international organisation and global governance, as well as practitioners from non-governmental organizations.
