Biogeography and Evolution in New Zealand

Biogeography and Evolution in New Zealand

Michael Heads

Productivity Press

Biogeography and Evolution in New Zealand provides the first in-depth treatment of the biogeography of New Zealand, a region that has been a place of long-enduring interest to ecologists, evolutionary scientists, geographers, geologists, and scientists in related disciplines. It serves as a key addition to the contemporary discussion on regionalization—how is New Zealand different from the rest of the world? With what other areas does it share its geology, history, and biota? Do new molecular phylogenies show that New Zealand may be seen as a biological ‘parallel universe’ within global evolution?
Society as Service/Service as Society

When thinking about the term 'service' as the raison d' tre for the book, the initial rationale assumed a simplistic definition of it as offering facility nodes within a network of places in the space of a settlement. However, initially recognising and defining the term 'service' offerings as just nodes in places was found to be only the surface fa ade of what service provision really implies within societal maintenance and sustainability. Hence, the service influence became far deeper leading to the conclusion that Service defines Society/Society defines Service. From these two succinct phrases, the curious and the imaginative are offered access to a perspective that engages with how society is, and performs, within its surface and hidden spaces that drive the societal process, and the connection of what 'service' has to do with it. Alice Springs and its remote character has created a place of 'pure' serviceability. 'Pure' in the sense that it has no traditional primary production to fall back on to provide a sense of why it exists, as other settlements seem to possess explaining their initial and ongoing presence. Its existence is a question of service, which drives the local economy. These geographical factors provide a place rich in 'serviceable' research material, a valuable tool to gauge society. Bourdieuan theories assist with service and society association.

Comprehending what power is, may be, or imagined to be, through human considerations is vital, since the energy used to generate power is life's social and cultural fabric. Since power is understood in many ways, it shows that it is too complicated to just conveniently rationalize from a compartmental methodology. However, there is also a paradox here since power can be reduced to the simplicity of acting in a certain way or not acting in a certain way. This 'acting' may be self-induced or from pressure applied by others and societal expectations. Hence, power is multifaceted, but also of a binary yes or no within its potentiality and actuality. It is the versatile nature of power within the space of its binary disposition that the book interweaves with. When 'interweaving, ' eleven 'faces' have been selected to offer what power is and does. Eight are prominent social thinkers or 'simply' thinkers who consider what life is, as it may be incorrect just to restrict or label them to the social aspect of living, as being of and in existence is more than that. Another is the physical evolving environment through which all living beings enjoy movement. One other participates with power through religious filters of production, and the remaining one is an artistic appreciation of how to power. My face of power filters these faces.

The Head in Edward Nugent's Hand

The Head in Edward Nugent's Hand

Roanoke is part of the lore of early America, the colony that disappeared. Many Americans know of Sir Walter Ralegh's ill-fated expedition, but few know about the Algonquian peoples who were the island's inhabitants. The Head in Edward Nugent's Hand examines Ralegh's plan to create an English empire in the New World but also the attempts of native peoples to make sense of the newcomers who threatened to transform their world in frightening ways. Beginning his narrative well before Ralegh's arrival, Michael Leroy Oberg looks closely at the Indians who first encountered the colonists. The English intruded into a well-established Native American world at Roanoke, led by Wingina, the weroance, or leader, of the Algonquian peoples on the island. Oberg also pays close attention to how the weroance and his people understood the arrival of the English: we watch as Wingina's brother first boards Ralegh's ship, and we listen in as Wingina receives the report of its arrival. Driving the narrative is the leader's ultimate fate: Wingina is decapitated by one of Ralegh's men in the summer of 1586. When the story of Roanoke is recast in an effort to understand how and why an Algonquian weroance was murdered, and with what consequences, we arrive at a more nuanced and sophisticated understanding of what happened during this, the dawn of English settlement in America.

On the promontory of Kinnaird Head, on the north-east coast of Scotland, sits a peculiarly designed lighthouse. It is an exception in history - the only lighthouse in the world to be built into a castle. Originally constructed in 1571 by Sir Alexander Fraser, the castle towered over his new town of Fraserburgh with Scotland’s forgotten university built in its shadow. For 200 years this small tower played host to lairds, lords and Jacobites before abandonment in 1750. The castle was saved from ruin in 1787 when the newly formed Northern Lighthouse Board transformed it into their first Scottish lighthouse. Every Stevenson engineer visited and left their mark on the site, while a never-ending watch of keepers kept the light flashing for 200 years. With automation in 1991 there was a second abandonment of the old tower, until it made its latest transition from lighthouse to museum. Since 1995 it has been Scotland’s most visited lighthouse, frozen in time as a monument to the manned lighthouses of old.

Square Head With an I.Q. not much higher than "Forest Gump," Michael has seemed to "make it " from high school dropout, to world traveler, and now, an Author. Authors Note: This book started out as a journal for my grandkids. I wanted them to know who I really am. (Who really knows their grandparents?) Currently, they only know me as "Papa." I like that. I like being a papa. I like being known as the chubby little gray haired old man who works in the movie business. One grandchild, Jessica, once said to me, "Papa, you're not like my friends' papas', you're a little weird, but a cool weird." She then told me that I reminded her of Peter Pan; the boy who never grew up - just an older version now. I like that as well. My other grandkids, Rumor and Riley, call me "Willy Wonka". I believe this has something to do with the vast amounts of candy and sugar drinks I always seem to ply them with. (I do hope their parents have good dental insurance )Now, they will know me The good, bad, and the (not so) ugly truth (I still want them to love me.)Square Head is a funny, intoxicating, fast read, with some great candid "Photo-op" moments of movie stars Mike was lucky enough to have worked with. A true behind the scenes look not only of Hollywood... but life

Our present day is highly charged. Many Christians are on edge and anxious. Social media is aflame with vitriol. Countless numbers assume that others are guilty until proven innocent. Of all people, Christians who believe in Jesus and trust that the Scriptures are the final rule of faith and life should be steady in their work and social relations. This book unpacks sober-mindedness-what it is and some ways it can look. From beginning to end, the Gospel of Jesus is the heart of sober-mindedness and the reason we should want to be known as a sober-minded people. By the time readers put this book down, they ought to find their interactions on social media different, their responses to slanderous talk corrected, and any temptation to panic-mindedness replaced. But most of all, they will come to have their trust in the storm-calming Savior strengthened.
