The Spacemaker's Guide to Big Change
This book gives definition to participatory practice as a necessary form of activism in development planning for cities. It gives guidance on how practice can make space for big and lasting change and for new opportunities to be discovered. It points to ways of building synergy and negotiating our way in the social and political spaces ‘in between’ conventional and often competing ideals – public and private interests, top down and bottom up, formal and informal, the global agendas which outsiders promote and the local needs of insiders, for example. It offers guidance on process, designed to close gaps and converge worlds which we know have become divisive and discriminatory, working from the detail of everyday life in search of beginnings that count, building out and making meaningful locally, the abstractions of the global causes we champion – poverty alleviation, environmental sustainability, resilience.Practice – the collective process by which decisions are negotiated, plans designed and actions taken in response to needs and aspirations, locally and globally – we will see, is not just about being practical, but more. Its purpose is to give structure to our understanding of the order and disorder in our cities today, then to disturb that order when it has become inefficient or inequitable, even change it. It is to add moral value to morally questionable planning practice and so build "a social economy for the satisfaction of human need." Practice in these spaces ‘in-between’ redraws the boundaries of expectation of disciplinary work and offers a new high ground of moral purpose from which to be more creative, more integrated, more relevant, more resourceful – more strategic.

Equality and Diversity: Embedding Equality and Diversity into a Postgraduate Management Programme
(black and white print) This publication originally formed part of a Master's degree dissertation completed in 2011 by Nabeel. Research was undertaken over a period of two years at a Further Education college and a small private college where Nabeel delivered a level 7 post-graduate management programme accredited by a leading UK awarding organisation. A range of curriculum-level strategies were deployed by Nabeel and his colleagues in order to embed equality and diversity and reduce barriers to learning for international students undertaking the programme. These had a positive pedagogical and performance-related impact. The findings will be of particular interest to teachers and managers responsible for undergraduate, post-graduate and professional programmes being delivered to international students or to learners whose first language is not English, as well as those considering curriculum-level and progression strategies for business and management programmes at level three and above. The research may also provide useful insight to managers and teachers of other subject areas which are internally assessed. The findings are correct as at February 2011. Minor updates have been made to the case study, as well as selective editing and certain stakeholders have been anonymised for ethical reasons. Although the national landscape may have changed since 2011, the strategies applied remain valid and independent of such context. Research questions considered in this dissertation: 1.What constitutes embedding of Equality and Diversity at curriculum level? 2.What are the likely barriers to student learning / achievement on the PGDMS (Level 7 Management) programme? 3.What elements should be prioritised for embedding at curriculum level in order to improve E & D for Blue College PGDMS (Level 7 Management) students? This publication builds on and incorporates the literature review published and entitled: Equality and Diversity: Embedding Equality and Diversity into the Curriculum - a literature review

PASS FIRST TIME This textbook provides you with all the information you need to pass first time, since it focuses systematically on each of the assessment criteria in the unit.As a lecturer / trainer / tutor / assessor / curriculum manager, how do you ensure:1.that all individual learners' needs are identified and met effectively?2.that full account is taken of disability and learning difficulties when preparing and delivering teaching, learning and assessment strategies?3.that strategies applied to reduce the barriers to learning experienced by disabled learners and those with learning difficulties are legitimate and reasonable and do not provide them with an unfair advantage? 4.that the most appropriate teaching, learning and assessment methods are used?, and5.that sessions are planned and delivered effectively (and evidenced accordingly as part of a MICRO-TEACH)? This textbook addresses each of these questions, with supporting research as needed, while remaining tightly focused on the unit's assessment criteria. Out of the three units of the Award in Education and Training, Understanding and Using Inclusive Teaching and Learning Approaches in Education and Training is probably the most demanding to understand and apply. What sets this book apart is the author's application of his considerable experience to this subject area in order to simplify it for those new to teaching and/or new to the subject.Whether you are delivering training or lectures to 16-18 year-olds, mature learners, professionals, managers or international students, with a range of learning needs and barriers to learning, this book will prove useful in preparing you not only for your unit assessment, but also for work in the sector. Most importantly, the book adopts a practical approach, which is supported by evidence and, where relevant, cross-referenced to Ofsted and QAA expectations. It is therefore suitable for those intending to enter teaching and training as well as those already involved in delivering or managing a programme.Understanding and Using Inclusive Teaching and Learning Approaches in Education and Training is the second book in the Award in Education and Training series and covers each aspect of the Award in Education and Training (AET) unit of the same name. Like the first book on Understanding Roles, Responsibilities and Relationships in Education and Training, this book is mapped directly to each of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the unit across all awarding organisations. It provides detailed practical explanation and links to various other resources so that whether you are new to teaching or already in a teaching or related role, there will be a detailed examination of inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education and training. People purchasing this book may find it useful to have a copy of the first book in the series (Understanding Roles, Responsibilities and Relationships in Education and Training) as background.
