John Williamson Nevin, American Theologian

John Williamson Nevin, American Theologian

Richard E. Wentz

Oxford University Press Inc
1997
sidottu
This study of the life and thought of John Williamson Nevin (1803-1886) offers a revised interpretation of an important nineteenth-century religious thinker. Along with the historian, Phillip Schaff, Nevin was a leading exponent of what became known as the Mercersburg Movement, named for the college and theological seminary of the German Reformed Church located in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. The story is a neglected aspect of American studies. Wentz provides a kind of post-modern perspective on Nevin, presenting him as a distinctively American thinker, rather than as a reactionary romantic. Although influenced by German philosophy, historical studies, and theology, Nevin's thought was a profound response to the American public context of his day. He was, in many respects, a public theologian, judging the prevailing development of American Christianity as a new religion that was fashioning its own disintegration and that of American culture at large. Nevin's reinterpretation of catholicity in the American context opened the way for a radical understanding of religion and of American public life.

John Williamson Nevin's life has never been given the full attention that it deserves. That may be due in part to the controversial nature of his thinking. Yet in many respects, his enormous contribution to American religious history is acknowledged by those who have read him. He stood out as the great advocate of evangelical catholicism, and his call for a thorough examination of the place of the church in nineteenth-century theology was revolutionary. It was Nevin who first saw the threat to the church in the erosion of faith in the church as a divine institution sacramentally entrusted by God with the reclamation of the whole world--an erosion that occurred well before the Civil War in the hypersubjectivity of Protestant America.
Crossing Traces: Nevin Aladag
Few artists are in such high demand today as sculptor, installation- and performance-artist Nevin Aladag. In 2025, she was awarded the renowned State Prize for the Visual Arts of the Land of Baden-Württemberg, which also entails an exhibition. The accompanying publication follows the conceptual approach upon which much of Aladag’s work is based. She removes everyday items—rugs, furniture or instruments—from their original context and transforms them into artworks that transcend the boundaries of sculpture, installation, video, and sound art. Again and again the audience are confronted with their familiar habits of perception and with questions relating to tradition, belonging, and identity. With a compact format and a number of surprising features, this publication provides a fascinating insight into Aladag’s artistic career to date and her latest works. With an illustrated booklet including an introductory text and 30 postcards with numerous reproductions of her works, this publication is a unique tribute to her oeuvre. Text in English and German.

Eli doesn't know who he is or where he came from. What he does know is that he can pluck the magic from a soul like a petal from a flower. And he knows there is nothing he wouldn't borrow, steal or destroy in order to discover his past.Malcolm knows he can raise the dead with a wave of his hand but all he really wants is to be able to save his mother. When Eli is sent to track down the legendary fang of the leopard god Osebo, he finds himself entangled with an old and ancient power. Eli's search to retrace his past continues... in the second book in the King Of Dead Things Duology. For fans of dark fantasy like Cemetery Boys, Noughts and Crosses and Threads that Bind from major new YA talent Jamaican British author Nevin HolnessIt was getting increasingly difficult to differentiate dreams from reality. Dreams, of course, didn’t have teeth and memories didn’t have claws. But something had torn into him; whatever it was, it was hungry. It had been three months since Sunny left.To anyone that asks, Eli is fine. Sure, the last time he’d seen his sister they’d both narrowly avoided their deaths and yes, he hadn’t know she was his sister at the time. It was also fine that she wouldn’t tell him who he was or where he came from or more importantly why she had been lying to his face since the first day they’d supposedly met.He doesn’t remember his family anyway, so it’s easy to force himself to forget she ever existed. But then something begins hunting him down in his sleep. It starts small: a scratch on the wrist, a burn on the chest but then his dreams become more vivid and begin to draw blood. Each night, when things get dire, he senses Sunny and wakes up just before whatever is chasing him can finish the job….Eli vows to avoid sleep altogether. But can he stay awake, and alive, long enough to reunite with his sister and finally get the answers he’s been agonising over?
Identity, Reconciliation and Transitional Justice
Building upon an interdisciplinary synthesis of recent literature from the fields of transitional justice and conflict transformation, this book introduces a groundbreaking theoretical framework that highlights the critical importance of identity in the relationship between transitional justice and reconciliation in deeply divided societies. Using this framework, Aiken argues that transitional justice interventions will be successful in promoting reconciliation and sustainable peace to the extent that they can help to catalyze those crucial processes of ‘social learning’ needed to transform the antagonistic relationships and identifications that divide post-conflict societies even after the signing of formal peace agreements. Combining original field research and an extensive series of expert interviews, Aiken applies this social learning model in a comprehensive examination of both the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the uniquely ‘decentralized’ approach to transitional justice that has emerged in Northern Ireland. By offering new insight into the experiences of these countries, Aiken provides compelling firsthand evidence to suggest that transitional justice interventions can best contribute to post-conflict reconciliation if they not only provide truth and justice for past human rights abuses, but also help to promote contact, dialogue and the amelioration of structural and material inequalities between former antagonists. Identity, Reconciliation and Transitional Justice makes a timely contribution to debates about how to best understand and address past human rights violations in post-conflict societies, and it offers a valuable resource to students, scholars, practitioners and policymakers dealing with these difficult issues.
Identity, Reconciliation and Transitional Justice
Identity, Reconciliation and Transitional Justice: Overcoming Intractability analyses how the mechanisms of transitional justice have a part to play in promoting reconciliation and sustainable peace in transitional societies: helping social groups deeply divided by past violence to overcome existing antagonisms and to build more positive relationships with one another. Whilst there is an emerging consensus that a causal link does exist between transitional justice, reconciliation, and sustainable peace, to date the actual processes underlying this relationship have been left undertheorized and largely unspecified. This theoretical gap is attributable, at least in part, to the very limited dialogue between transitional justice scholars and the growing number of conflict transformation theorists from the related disciplines of political science, conflict resolution, and social psychology. In particular, recent conflict transformation work highlights the central role that group or ‘collective’ identities play in the commission and perpetuation of ethnonational violence, and suggests the need to transform these identities and their antagonistic relationships in order to advance societal reconciliation and sustainable peace. Drawing upon an interdisciplinary synthesis of transitional justice and conflict transformation literatures, and addressing the different interventions adopted in the deeply divided societies of South Africa and Northern Ireland, this book outlines an innovative framework that traces the complex linkages between identity, transitional justice, and intergroup reconciliation in deeply divided post-conflict environments. It will be of considerable interest to those working in the area of transitional justice.

Recent manuscript evidence from al-Jami' al-Kabir in ?an 'a' suggests that the Qur'an took its final shape well before 671 CE. Irrespective, however, of who composed it or when it was compiled, questions remain about whether the Qur'an followed any kind of preconceived plan or compositional schema that makes sense in today's world. In The al-Baqara Crescendo, Nevin Reda introduces a bold new avenue of research: the poetics of Qur'anic narrative structure. Focusing on Surat al-Baqara, the longest and most challenging of the suras, she explores the beauty and rationale behind the Qur'an's unusual organization. Reda argues that the sura - often dismissed by Muslim traditionalists and Orientalist critics as a baffling collection of disjointed material - can be appreciated as a coherent composition if it is approached as a spoken text. Calling attention to oral organizational techniques such as repetition, this book's repertoire of figures showcases Surat al-Baqara's ingenious layout and pinpoints the sophisticated meanings that are embedded within it. Incorporating insights from literary theory and Biblical studies, the author advances inclusivity and intercultural bridge-building in the study of scripture. In an engaging narrative that is bound to captivate and challenge the reader, Reda communicates a deep love and thorough command of her subject, all while presenting a significant new development in Islamic feminist hermeneutics.

"Looking for Calvin and Hobbes" is an affectionate and revealing book about uncovering the story behind this most uncommon trio - a man, a boy and his tiger. From the get-go, it was obvious that this was no ordinary comic strip. Calvin was named after the 16th-century Protestant theologian who believed in predestination, Hobbes after the philosopher a century later who once observed that life is 'nasty, brutish and short'. Watterson injected real philosophical questions into his strip and coupled his commentaries with groundbreaking artwork. His lavish half-page Sunday strips completely re-envisioned the potential of the comics, while never detracting from his poignant humor. Bill Watterson was completely different from most comic strip creators because he never wanted to see Calvin & Hobbes turn into a commercial monolith. A longtime liberal and former political cartoonist, he staunchly refused to have the characters merchandised - a decision which could have netted him millions of additional dollars in income per year - and rarely made public appearances or granted interviews. When Steven Spielberg called him to talk about making an animated Calvin & Hobbes movie, Watterson didn't take the call. As a result, dozens of bootleg items have flooded the market. There were only 3,160 strips ever produced, but Watterson has left behind an impressive legacy. Calvin & Hobbes references litter the pop culture landscape and his fans are as varied as they are numerable.
