Focusing on the profound effect that art, craft, and color can play in any interior, this book presents Hollis s masterful new residential projects, in which the curation of art, objects, and custom furnishings are key to the character of the spaces. Spanning homes in New York, California, and Hawaii, each interior reveals a new lesson in the creative and playful juxtaposition of artistic elements. In an elegant townhouse in San Francisco, a striking collection of contemporary paintings contrasts color and dynamism against luxuriously minimal furnishings. A loft in Tribeca pairs the organic forms of naturalistic chandeliers over sleek, modern furniture. And in a dreamlike beach house in Hawaii, custom woodwork brings into the space elements of the sublime nature outside. With contributions from acclaimed artists and artisans whose work has complemented and elevated the spaces including French artist Ingrid Donat, Italian sculptor Mauro Mori, and art/design practice Studio Job the book is at once an exhibition of enviably artful interiors and an inspiration for those looking to reinvigorate their homes with art, craft, and design.

This is the biography of Australia's first naval architect, Walter Reeks (1861 - 1925). A man who produced innovative, sometimes unorthodox designs across a broad range of vessels, from commercial craft to recreational yachts. Best known as the pioneer of the Sydney fleet of ferries, Reeks rose to prominence immediately after his arrival in Sydney from Liverpool in 1885. He went on to design more than 300 vessels up until his death in 1925 at the age of 64. Clients included the well-heeled to those with less resources. Craft were built throughout Australia and New Zealand, many becoming stalwarts of local, regional, state and national trading routes and industries. Others went on to win coveted yachting titles, some with Reeks at the helm. Despite these professional successes and his wide-reaching acclaim, this is also the story of sorrow and tragedy, the death at a young age of his first wife Mary in 1895, and the murder of his son Kent in 1914 casting large, grieving shadows on Reeks' family life. Yet, this is the story of a man who not only achieved so much professionally but was a dedicated supporter and protagonist of maritime pursuits throughout Australia, as well as to engineering, education and volunteering more generally. Reeks was a member of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron for over 40 years, being made a life member in 1900, serving as vice-commodore between 1906 and 1910, and notably being its official measurer for an unsurpassed stint of 39 years. During this period, Reeks also designed many of Sydney's leading yachts and investigated the potential for an Australian challenge to the America's Cup, a dream he was still chasing some four decades later. A life of serving, adventure, cutting-edge innovation, risk-taking and saying 'Yes ' are highlights of Reeks' journey. While his achievements, as we reflect back on his career, are immense, their collective weight and worthiness would likely not have been realised by Reeks himself. They were just the next project, the next step forward, the next outcome, the next compromise between the practical and the ideal, between his design parameters and his client's needs. It was definitely a life well lived and one worth telling.

Bringing together ten leading researchers in the field of deliberative democracy, this important book examines the features of a Deliberative Mini-Public (DMP) and considers how DMPs link into democratic systems. It examines the core design features of DMPs and their role in the broader policy process and takes stock of the characteristics that distinguish them from other forms of citizen participation. In doing so, the book offers valuable insights into the contributions that DMPs can make not only to the policy process, but also to the broader agenda of revitalising democracy in contemporary times.
Augustine's Problem

Augustine's Problem

Augustine's Problem provides a new approach to St. Augustine's life and doctrine, hypothesizing that his problem was not sexual addiction but sexual impotence. For Augustine, the problem with sex was not the seductive nature of women, but the unpredictability of desire, which can induce an unwanted erection or fail to provide one when even the mind would choose to have sex. He extends his personal incapacity to a general impotence of the will--we can never, without grace, choose any good. Just as the impotent man cannot work on his impotence, we cannot work on our salvation; only God can make a difference and predestines a tiny elect. The disobedience of the Garden is transferred to the disobedience of the male member, guaranteeing that the sin of Eden is transferred, in conception, as original sin. The most controversial elements of Augustine's theology are all linked to the theme of impotence, as expressed in his writings, from the Confessions to the anti-Pelagian works written at the end of his life. ""As a Jew and a student of world religions, I find Jeff Nicoll's book, Augustine's Problem, both informative and fascinating. Here we have the origins of the worldview of the faith which continues to be the world's dominant religion, yet finds itself today at a crossroads in a radically changing world, particularly in regard to the question of the proper definition of human sexuality."" --Mordecai Schreiber, author, Why People Pray: The Universal Power of Prayer ""Nicoll's reading of Augustine is bold, broad, and deep. Obviously there is hardly a major work on Augustine Nicoll has not read. Yet, by chapter 5 of Nicoll's work, I began to feel I had never read Augustine. How had I not seen what was right in front of my eyes? Nicoll the physicist does for Augustine what Erikson the psychologist did for Luther."" --Ronald E. Hopson, Psychologist Jeff Nicoll received his doctorate in theoretical physics from MIT and has published papers in physics and cosmology. This is his first work in the areas of church history and theology.

This book provides a comprehensive history of the 21ft restricted class yachts. It starts with one of its major success stories, Tassie Too, and the Tasmanian domination of the Forster Cup -- a hotly contested and high profile series of interstate races held annually between 1922 and 1955 that saw skippers and crew propelled to near-celebrity status. The book then recognises Lord Forster's (Australia's Governor-General between 1920 and 1925) proactive role in the development of the class, as well as his inspiring personal story. It next details the origins of the 21ft restricted class, and its specifications, as well as provides a history of the Forster Cup series; the outcomes fuelled by close racing, surprising results, interstate rivalry, controversy and protest, massive public support, and the creation of legends, both men and boats. The book also summarises all of the craft built to the class and provides biographies of influential skippers, boat builders and designers, as well as crew lists.Overall, the 21ft restricted class filled an important niche in Australian sailing history, particularly between the Great War and World War II. This book showcases the class, its history and its current status, with the goal of fostering further interest and development in the 21s. Of note, more than 70 yachts built in Australia between 1909 and 2009 form the 21ft restricted class. Of the fleet 20 survive, including the class standout Tassie Too that is now based at the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania.

The extraordinary life of Zhuang Zhou sits halfway between fable and philosophy.“It was twenty-five centuries ago in the land of Song, between the Yellow River and the River Huai: Zhuang Zhou was born without a cry with his eyes wide open.” Welcome to China in the fifth century BCE, a colorful, violent, unstable world into which Zhuang is born. Here royals raise huge armies, constantly waging wars against one another. They have slaves, concubines. Gold is everywhere. And so is hunger. Born rich and entitled, Zhuang learns to refuse any official function. His travels bring him closer to ordinary people, from whom he learns how to live a simple and useful life. This is how he will become one of the greatest Chinese philosophers who gave his name to his legendary book, the Zhuangzi, one of the two foundational texts of Taoism—a magnificent procession of lively stories in which we meet dwarfs, virtuous bandits, butchers, powerful lords in their castles, turtles, charming concubines, and false sages. In this remarkable bildungsroman, award-winning French novelist Patrick Rambaud spins out the extraordinary life of Zhuang Zhou—a poetic, cruel, and often humorous tale, halfway between fable and philosophy.
