Outsider Citizens examines a foundational moment in the writing of race, gender, and sexuality––the decade after 1945, when Richard Wright, Simone de Beauvoir, and others sought to adapt existentialism and psychoanalysis to the representation of newly emerging public identities. Relyea offers the first book-length study bringing together Wright and Beauvoir to reveal their common sources and concerns. Relyea's discussion begins with Native Son and then examines Wright's postwar exile in France and his engagement with existentialism and psychoanalysis in The Outsider. Beauvoir met Wright during her postwar tour of America, chronicled in America Day by Day. After returning to France, Beauvoir adapted American social constructionist concepts of race as one source for her philosophical investigation of gender in The Second Sex, while also rejecting 1940s psychoanalytic theories of femininity. Relyea examines later representations of race and gender in a discussion of James Baldwin's critique of postwar American liberalism and ideals of innocence and masculinity in Giovanni's Room, which represents the remaking of white American identity through the risks of exile and the return of the gaze.

The portrayal of Ireland on screen has been problematic due to a lack of a sustained indigenous film industry before the establishment of the Irish Film Board in 1980 and the Northern Ireland Film Council in 1989. However, before this, many talented and proficient non-professional filmmakers were capturing events that hold valuable clues to an internal social and historical perspective on twentieth-century Ireland. Northern Ireland has a rich heritage of amateur and independent cinema that includes several prolific filmmakers and collectives. Many of these image makers garnered awards on the prestigious international independent film circuit and had their work shown in film festivals and on television. Crucially, they offered an alternative and illuminating view to the mainstream-cinema and broadcast-media imagery of a conflicted region that was often filmed but little understood. They also laid the groundwork for the vibrant film culture that exists in Northern Ireland today. This book will offer the first scholarly exploration of these 'cine auteurs'.

A vital and timely reminder that modern life owes as much to outlandish thinking as to dominant ideologies What do the Nag Hammadi library, Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code, speculative feminist historiography, Marcus Garvey’s finances, and maps drawn by asylum patients have in common? Jonathan P. Eburne explores this question as never before in Outsider Theory, a timely book about outlandish ideas. Eburne brings readers on an adventure in intellectual history that stresses the urgency of taking seriously-especially in an era of fake news-ideas that might otherwise be discarded or regarded as errant, unfashionable, or even unreasonable. Examining the role of such thinking in contemporary intellectual history, Eburne challenges the categorical demarcation of good ideas from flawed, wild, or bad ones, addressing the surprising extent to which speculative inquiry extends beyond the work of professional intellectuals to include that of nonprofessionals as well, whether amateurs, unfashionable observers, or the clinically insane. Considering the work of a variety of such figures-from popular occult writers and gnostics to so-called outsider artists and pseudoscientists-Eburne argues that an understanding of its circulation and recirculation is indispensable to the history of ideas.
