P. F. Strawson and his Philosophical Legacy
This volume offers a collective study of the work of P. F. Strawson (1919-2006) and an exploration of its relevance for current philosophical debates. It is the first book since Strawson's death to cover the full range of his philosophy, with chapters by world-leading experts about his lasting contributions to the philosophy of language, metaphysics, epistemology, moral philosophy, and philosophical methodology. It aims to achieve a balance between exegesis of Strawson, critical engagement, and consideration of the reception and continuing value of his work. It explores the intellectual relations between Strawson and some of his predecessors and contemporaries and it will be an indispensable source for scholars and students of twentieth-century philosophy and its influence in the twenty-first.
p- and hp- Finite Element Methods

p- and hp- Finite Element Methods

C. Schwab

Clarendon Press
1998
sidottu
This book is an introduction to the mathematical analysis of p- and hp-finite elements applied to elliptic problems in solid and fluid mechanics, and is suitable for graduate students and researchers who have had some prior exposure to finite element methods (FEM). In the last decade the p-, hp-, and spectral element methods have emerged as efficient and robust approximation methods for several classes of problems in this area. The aim of this book is therefore to establish the exponential convergence of such methods for problems with the piecewise analytic solutions which typically arise in engineering. It looks at the variational formulation of boundary value problems with particular emphasis on the regularity of the solution. The books then studies the p- and hp- convergence of FEM in one and two dimensions, supplying complete proofs. Also covered are hp-FEM for saddle point problems and the techniques for establishing the discrete infsup condition. Finally, hp-FEM in solid mechanics and the issue of locking is addressed in the context of these methods.
p-Adic Methods and Their Applications
A number of texts have recently become available which provide good general introductions to p-Adic numbers and p-Adic analysis. However, there is at present a gap between such books and the sophisticated applications in the research literature. The aim of this book is to bridge this gulf by providing a collection of intermediate level articles on various applications of p-Adic techniques throughout mathematics. The idea for producing such a volume was suggested by Oxford University Press in connection with a three day meeting `p-Adic Methods and their Applications' held at Manchester University in September 1989 and which have received financial support from the London Mathematical Society. Some of these articles grew out of talks given at this conference, others were written by invitation especially for this volume. All contributions were refereed with a particular view to their suitability for inclusion in such a book.
P. P. Ewald and his Dynamical Theory of X-ray Diffraction
Paul Ewald's 1916-1917 masterpiece `On the Foundations of Crystal Optics' describes the selfconsistent interaction of electromagnetic waves with crystals on a molecular level. While astonishing in its detailed predictions for X-ray diffraction, full appreciation of the theory and its utility had to await much later advances in measurement techniques and crystal growth. Concepts introduced in the theory, now known as the Ewald sphere, Ewald summation, and Ewald-Oseen extinction, have become mainstays in diverse areas of modern physics. This memorial volume, with contributions by leading figures in the field, is an affectionate survey of his life, scientific work, and role in the international crystallographic community.
