Parental Involvement in Children's Reading
Parental involvement in children's education is a subject of growing interest and recent legislation in both the UK and USA has given formal recognition of parents’ rights. Learning to read is an obvious area where parents can do a great deal to help, and some schools have had programmes for parental involvement in reading for some time. However recent research has shown the considerable benefit in having carefully structured systems for parental involvement. This book presents a review of past and current good practice in this field. Details of a wide range of schemes developed in local areas are given in a series of short contributed papers, which are grouped into sub sections of Part 2 according to the type of project. Part 3 is essentially a manual of materials and methods. The emphasis throughout the book is on service delivery to all children although there is of course considerable discussion of remedial reading and children with special needs The book should appeal to a wide audience in education, educational administration and educational psychology.

Parental Supervision amplifies the research Theodore Moran first presented in Foreign Direct Investment and Development (1998), assessing the opportunities and dangers that foreign direct investment may present to the growth of developing countries. Moran uses almost 50 percent more case studies than the earlier work to examine two types of foreign investments: (1) those that are tightly integrated into the parent firm's strategy and (2) those that are hindered by joint-venture and domestic-content requirements. The study is a comparison between these two types of foreign operations how backward linkages to local suppliers, operations of local affiliates, and the spillovers and externalities in the host economy differ from one type of foreign operation to the other. In tightly integrated networks, not only is the performance of local affiliates superior and upgraded more continuously, but also, surprisingly, the backward linkages from the affiliates to local suppliers tend to be larger and more robust.Moran reviews contemporary efforts to measure the impact of simultaneous trade and investment liberalization on host country welfare, finding that the magnitude of both the benefits and the costs may be far greater than conventional wisdom suggests.

This Element reviews what we know about parental investments and children's human capital in low-to-middle-income countries (LMICs). First, it presents definitions and a simple analytical framework; then discusses determinants of children's human capital in the form of cognitive skills, socioemotional skills and physical and mental health; then reviews estimates of impacts of these forms of human capital; next considers the implications of such estimates for inequality and poverty; and concludes with a summary suggesting some positive impacts of parental investments on children's human capital in LMICs and a discussion of gaps in the literature pertaining to both data and methodology. Mayhem ensues when the family is forced to come together in a haphazard but dramatic sort of way. Told in Bonnie Jae Dane's trademark blend of wit and pathos using lyrical prose Parental Outpatients begs to be read with the possibility there might be something useful to all parents in the resolution.

Parental Descriptions of Child Personality
This book reports the first attempt in the child development literature to examine the structure of early personality based on parents' free-descriptions of their children. It is an important piece of research because of its cross-national focus on personality development. The authors present a data set that reveals considerable consistency in the parental descriptions of child personality in both western and nonwestern countries. This consistency supports the cultural universality of the "Big Five" personality factors.
