A good local history is an excellent andagreeable thing. It pleases on two counts. It satisfies the curiosity of theinhabitants of a region, whether newcomers or old settlers, especially if noadequate history had existed before. It dispels myths, corrects old wives'tales. And, if the history is first-rate, it goes beyond a factual account ofpersons and places, the particularities of a region, and shows the significanceof these human happenings in a larger scheme of things, in this case theemergence of a new nation.Ellis's history succeeds on both counts. It is a delightful andauthoritative account of lore which not even St. Tammanyites may have heard of.Did you know, for example, that there was once a flourishing wine industry inSt. Tammany Parish? That local vineyards produced excellent red and whitewines, the red from Concord grapes, the white from Herbemont? Did you know thatin 1891 a rice crop of 50,000 barrels was harvested, half the entire output ofSouth Carolina? . . .Ellis has rendered this pleasant and authoritative history in a graceful andlively style and with a genuine affection for the people he writes about.Walker PercyFrom the Foreword

One of the BBC's '100 Novels That Shaped Our World''My favourite book of all time... it stays with you long after you have read it - for your whole life, in fact' Billy ConnollyA monument to sloth, rant and contempt, a behemoth of fat, flatulence and furious suspicion of anything modern - this is Ignatius J. Reilly of New Orleans, noble crusader against a world of dunces. The ordinary folk of New Orleans seem to think he is unhinged. Ignatius ignores them, heaving his vast bulk through the city's fleshpots in a noble crusade against vice, modernity and ignorance. But his momma has a nasty surprise in store for him: Ignatius must get a job. Undaunted, he uses his new-found employment to further his mission - and now he has a pirate costume and a hot-dog cart to do it with...Never published during his lifetime, John Kennedy Toole's hilarious satire, A Confederacy of Dunces is a Don Quixote for the modern age, and this Penguin Modern Classics edition includes a foreword by Walker Percy. 'A pungent work of slapstick, satire and intellectual incongruities ... it is nothing less than a grand comic fugue'The New York Times

— The New York Times Book Review «Sannsynligvis min favorittbok gjennom alle tider» — Billy Connolly, komiker

Cultivated turfgrass is an assemblage of mown, perennial grasses or prostrate-growing forb plants and a suite of microbes all competing with each other in a common environment. This book approaches turfgrass diseases from an ecological perspective and explains with examples how wild plants and microbes have co-evolved. It addresses the identification, biology and integrated management of both common turfgrass diseases and newly emergent diseases. It includes the common and lesser-known turfgrass species, their surrounding environment and the range of beneficial and pathogenic microbes which in combination explain why disease occurs. For disease identification purposes, fungal diseases are arranged according to their predominantly cool season and warm season occurrence. Turfgrass bacterial and viral diseases, and plant parasitic nematodes are also covered. Written by a team of international authors, it combines technical expertise and practical experience. Essential for anyone involved in managing turfgrass, this book provides the know-how to identify the early warning signs of diseases, in order to manipulate the environment and minimise the damage.
By the Rasping in My Lungs Something Evil This Way Comes: The Chronicle of an Independent Air Quality Field Researcher and Activist Presenting a Perso
This book is a detailed autobiographical account of Walker's decade of science-based challenges of natural gas development activities in the Jonah Field, Pinedale Anticline Field, and proposed Wyoming Range fields located in Sublette County, Wyoming. This story exposes the intense political interagency conflicts that constantly impeded meaningful regulatory actions to address growing hydrocarbon and ozone air pollution from natural gas drilling and production. The purpose of this book is to articulate a warning. The oil and gas industry is adept at the art of maneuver to gain support of local and higher politicians. Furthermore, regulatory legerdemain is a skillful art practiced by state and federal regulators who seek to appear environmentally proactive but who actually favor developers. Finally, when presented with new science, they perfunctorily dismiss it. Walker's approach is unique as he applies his former U.S. Air Force professional science experience to the role of independent unfunded citizen scientist. He reveals that while national concern over fracking practices has focused on ground water damage, fracking chemicals lofted into the local air mass by well completion flaring must also be considered. About the Author R. Perry Walker grew up in Wyoming, graduated from the University of Wyoming with a B.Sc. in Physics and joined the U.S. Air Force the same year. He served in the Viet Nam War and then elected to become a career officer. He earned an M.Sc. in Nuclear Reactor Engineering at the University of Lowell, Massachusetts. His military career involved research in a variety of high-tech fields including infrared imaging, underground nuclear testing, and nuclear weapons effects on optics in support of President Reagan's Space Defense Initiative. He holds a U.S. patent and has authored twenty-one classified technical papers about military technologies as well as eighteen public comment and analysis documents about air quality impacts from natural gas development in western Wyoming.

An incorrigible trickster, a clever thief, a rogue, sometimes a magnanimous hero, often a vengeful loser, but always a survivor, Coyote is the most complex character in the Nez Perce cycle of traditional myths. Nez Perce Coyote Tales, a collection of fifty-two stories translated from the native language, represents the most extensive treatment of the character of Coyote for any Native American group. Within these pages are stories of Coyote and various monsters, such as Flint Man, Killer Butterfly, and Cannibal: tales of Coyote and other animals, such as Bull, Fox, and Bat: and many other stories, including how Coyote brought the buffalo, warred with Winter, killed the grizzly bears, married his daughter, and visited White Mountain. In an introduction and concluding chapter, Deward E. Walker, Jr., and Daniel N. Matthews analyze Coyote's social relations and interaction with other character in Nez Perce mythology. They reveal how the myths, besides being entertaining stories, also serve to impart traditional cultural values, proper social relations, and other practical information.
