This book is about the past and the present. It is a tribute to the ladies and gentlemen of West Georgia and their contributions to so many. Some have passed on; some remain there; and others have moved to other places. Yet all, including their children, their children's children, their friends, and relatives, keep alive the memories of the West Georgia never forgetting their families, friends, and foods. Within these pages live the unsung heroes of yesteryear. They have nurtured the sick and sustained the healthy without, for the most part, recognition of their hard work, loving care, and great legacy to all. Each recipe reflects a very special person, and it is a rare treat to be able to visit these wonderful people at work in their own kitchens. Just as important are those who have preserved the past and submitted these very splendid recipes to the book. Some of the recipes may be followed from the eastern parts of Georgia to the west as the later generations moved on. It is simply amazing how family recipes travel, not only across Georgia, but across the nation far and wide. As may be noticed, many of the recipes are quite old. Some have been updated by the following generations. One will find such terms as "ice box", "wood stove", "a hot oven", "a handful," and other expressions. I trust that the modern mind can relate these terms to modern day equivalents and equipment being thankful for our world of modern conveniences.
My mother called me a thrill seeker as a kid. That continued to be a fair assessment throughout my life, but with unforeseen consequences. For 57 years I managed to cheat death as I endured accidents such as a head on car collision that catapulted me through two windshields or hitting a telephone pole at 110 MPH on a motorcycle, to name just a couple. But none of these true-life experiences compared to what come after my cancer diagnosis. In this book I use words to paint you alongside as I detail all my incredible life challenges and experiences. Ride along the emotional roller coaster that includes 17 surgeries and the domino effect of events that resulted. After the cancer diagnosis, an internal fight also ensued. It was the mental battle against the shadowy figures on my shoulders who constantly whispered morbid thoughts.

The first study of its kind to address the issue of ethnic diversity, Minority Citizens in Disasters focuses on the responses of two minorities—blacks and Mexican-Americans—relative to whites in three disaster events: a propane car derailment, a nitric acid spill, and a flood. Ronald Perry and Alvin Mushkatel find that response to initial warnings is influenced by the source of the information—mass media, public authorities, or family and friends—and by the immediacy of the danger, a group's familiarity with the type of threat, and the cause of the disaster. Though social contacts were most often the source of warning, public authorities were the most trusted and reliable. The mass media, usually considered an unreliable source, proved an effective means for reaching a majority of Mexican-Americans, who often tuned in to Spanish-language stations. Blacks, however, tended to dismiss the media as a vehicle controlled by whites and covering primarily white concerns, while whites often dismissed news stories as mere media productions.Perry and Mushkatel's record of the responses of blacks, Mexican-Americans, and whites not only reveals the differing social configurations of minority and majority groups but, more important, suggests concrete ways to modify and improve emergency management systems.
