Pokot Pastoralism

Pokot Pastoralism

Examines how pastoral peoples imagine, or even design, their futures under the pressure of changing environments and large-scale government projects. In East Africa and beyond, pastoral groups find themselves and their livelihoods under increasing threat when dealing with rapid environmental change. On the one hand, they contemplate major upheaval as a result of landscape and climate change on a scale never seen before. At the same time, these often-marginalised groups find themselves subsumed by the wider interests of national political economies prioritising new investment in land as well as encouraging tourism. This book investigates one such group - the nomadic pastoralists in East Pokot in north-west Kenya - and traces their social and ecological transformation over the past two hundred years to show how modern challenges are linked to the past history and also shape the perceptions of pastoral futures. In East Pokot the grass bush savannah upon which the pastoral lifestyle depends has strongly declined over a long period of time, with encroachment of acacia. Though traditionally cattle-rearing, its people have been forced to diversify into raising other browsing animals as well as cattle husbandry. The development efforts of the Kenyan government to use natural resources have also threatened their environment and their way of life. Bringing a long view to the history of human-environmental relations, the author reveals a more complex picture of change that, contrary to earlier assumptions, is not due exclusively to the pastoralists' pasture management, but also to the extinction of wildlife populations in the region, which were hunted heavily in colonial times. Attempts to move beyond Pokot territory, to the regions west of Lake Baringo and to the hard-fought Laikipia Plateau, have often been compromised by violent conflicts. While a younger generation looks to develop new sources of income through the job opportunities created by geothermal energy production, and diversify into other agricultural activities, this has also brought a dynamic social transformation: increasing production and sale of alcohol, decreasingly nomadic lifestyle, growing differences between the older and younger generations, and so on. Contributing to debates on future rural Africa, ecological history and environmental change, the book will appeal to anthropologists, sociologists, geographers, historians and development scholars. Published in association with the Collaborative Research Centre FUTURE RURAL AFRICA, funded by the German Research Council (DFG).

An odyssey of a mother and daughter who fought the outback and won... but at a terrible cost. Susana Honan, from Ireland, aged 18, arrived in Brisbane on the Gauntlet in 1878 and in 1886 married the owner/builder of the Royal Hotel in Birdsville, Qld. She had three children and her husband died during the third pregnancy. She managed that hotel or Tattersalls Hotel, also in Birdsville intermittently until 1912. In 1913 her third child, Alberta, married John James Scott, manager and part owner of Mount Leonard Station, a large and successful cattle property in the outback of western Queensland, 100 miles east of Birdsville. Alberta had five children between 1914 and 1920 and almost immediately after the birth of her fifth child her husband was drowned trying to recover cattle that a drover had abandoned at a time of unprecedented flooding of the Diamantina River system. Soon after this, she returned with her children to a life in Adelaide. To add to this her brother was killed by a sniper in WWI and later in WWII her son was executed by the Japanese in Ambon. Despite these hardships she gave her children a happy home and a good education. These two women lived a total of 71 years after their marriages, but only shared 11 of those with their husbands.

The Politics of Southern Pastoral Literature, 1785–1885

The Politics of Southern Pastoral Literature, 1785–1885

Peter Templeton

In The Politics of Southern Pastoral Literature, 1785–1885: Jeffersonian Afterlives, Peter Templeton presents a wide-ranging and systematic evaluation of pastoral in the nineteenth-century Southern novel, offering an explicit appraisal of the philosophical and political rationale of pastoral literature alongside the existing body of research into the image of Jefferson following his death. Rather than assuming a homogeneous South, Templeton locates Southern pastoral in its specific political context, offering readings of significant factors such as the literary representation of landscape, of class and the yeoman ideal, and the institution of slavery and its intellectual underpinnings. Focusing on a six key Southern authors, both canonical and relatively understudied, the book charts key transformations in the politics of pastoral literature in the period, and noteworthy reconfigurations in the representation of Jefferson and his philosophies, in order to analyze what these signified to nineteenth-century Americans. In doing so, the text also demonstrates how ideologies react to the stresses imposed on them by political realities.
A Practical Guide for Pastoral Counsellors

A Practical Guide for Pastoral Counsellors

In my ministry, I realised that there are broken people needing healing from God. I entered Bible school to study for a bachelor's degree in theology, followed by master's and doctoral degrees in ministry and counselling, helping people in desperate need of help from our Lord. I realised there was a need for guidelines to counsel, especially for busy pastors who might not have the time to pursue formal training in Christian counselling due to their other obligations in ministry. Motivated and guided by the Holy Spirit, this book was written to provide a simple, practical guide for pastoral counsellors, as well as for more mature Christians.
Prophet, Pastor, and Patriarch

Prophet, Pastor, and Patriarch

Peter A. Verkruyse

This book examines the rhetorical strategies employed by Alexander Campbell, a key figure in the ""Stone-Campbell"" or Restoration movement, which eventually comprised one of the largest religious sects in 19th century America and gave rise to three major contemporary church groups: The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the Churches of Christ, and the independent Christian Churches and Churches of Christ. Campbell was the dominant voice in this movement for four decades. Peter Verkruyse studies Campbell's sermons, lectures, debates, and journals to discover the extent to which Campbell's leadership depended upon his discursive practices. Through close readings, Verkruyse finds that a significant reason for the breadth and duration of Campbell's influence was his keen sense of the demands of rhetorical situations. As his movement evolved over time, Campbell faced radically different rhetorical circumstances, and his ability to adapt his rhetoric to the exigencies and constraints of these situations generated for him an evolving leadership ethos - first as prophet, then as pastor, and finally as patriarch. Fundamentally a study of religious rhetoric as a tool of leadership, this work also makes an important contribution to the canon of 19th century American religious history.

Reconsidering Resilience in African Pastoralism

Reconsidering Resilience in African Pastoralism

What does resilience mean? This is a question frequently asked and one that this book challenges and turns on its head. This book interrogates the increasingly overused concept of resilience by examining its application to a series of case studies focused on pastoralists in Africa. Through anthropological approaches, the book prioritises the localisation of resilience in context and practice; how to promote 'thinking resilience' in place of the typical 'resilience thinking' approach. Anthropology has the power to raise the vantage point of people and places, make them speak, breath, and live. And this gives to resilience more grounded and quotidian framings: local, relational, political and ever evolving. The authors ask whether development assistance and government intervention enhance the resilience of African pastoralists, while discussing critical topics, such as political power, land privatization, gender, human-animal identities, local networks, farmer-pastoralist relations, and norms and values. The epilogue, in turn, highlights important theoretical and empirical connections between the different case studies and shows how they provide a much more nuanced, culturally and politically meaningful approach to resilience than its common definition of 'bounce back.'By approaching resilience from relational and contextual perspectives, the book showcases a counter-narrative to guide more effective humanitarian and development framing and shed light on new avenues of understanding and practicing resilience in this uncertain world.

Character Loves Company: Defining the "Teachable Moments" in Sports - A Guidebook to Character Literacy Development
"Pete Paciorek has taken on an important leadership role with his character curriculum to teach the important lessons that at the end of the game, and at the end of the day, identify the true winners." --Fred Claire, Los Angeles Dodgers World Series Champion General Manager. "Pete Paciorek is a trailblazer in character development in youth sports. He has conducted extensive research on character literacy and I feel that he has crafted the most impactful character development curriculum available in the youth sport industry today." --Dr. Michael Sagas, Professor and Chair of Department of Tourism, Recreation, and Sport Management at the University of Florida. Sports play an integral role in the development of our children and young adults in America. Yet, over the past decade, the delivery system of character through sports has gone off course. The author, long-time coach Pete Paciorek, provides a thorough analysis of the two major causes for this decline and, more importantly, he provides systematic solutions for parents, coaches, and sports managers to help bring back the sanctity of youth and amateur athletics. This guidebook is designed for facilitating a building-block approach for the user in promoting and assessing life-long character growth through the vehicle of athletics. The content provides a unique blend of the theoretical studies on youth and amateur sport, the author's University of Florida supported research projects, and 25 powerful contributions from the likes of Olympic gold medalists, World and National Champions, and 40+ year veteran youth coaches. The triangulation and intersection of these three components supports the author's 25 character value curriculum. This book makes for an inspiring and motivational read through personal narratives and real-life defining moments in sports that translate into success in life after sports. The content of this guidebook provides the foundation of Pete Paciorek's non-profit organization, "Character Loves Company," which he established as a means to mentoring junior high school and high school students across the country through his 8-week Character Literacy Development (CLD) curriculum. Find the supplemental guide for coaches and parents at the end of the book.
